Please check if your local Asda is stocking this disturbing book

I would really like everyone to please check if their local Asda store is stocking this book " True Crime- Serial Killers"

I went shopping with DD yesterday , as usual she was looking to buy something for herself. I should have taken more notice of the book ( the title is a clue , I knowBlush However I was busy and she likened it to a book we have already called " Great Mysteries of the 20th Century " . I really regret that I did not - DD could not sleep and was really distressed . The book is horrible and goes into great detail and has photos/ pictures of bodies!

I have phoned Asda to complain, and made it clear that a) this book should not be stocked
at all/should not have been printed.
b/ it should definately not be in the children's section !

Asda promotes itself as a family friendly store , this is an extreme book , I don't think it should be sold anywhere.

They are going to speak to the book buyers and will monitor the level of complaints HmmPlease phone Asda head office on 0800 952 0101 if you see it.
thanks

it had the title 'serial killers' that kind of tells you what the content was going to include
how old is your dd? i hope she's okay

RitaMorgan · 14/05/2011 14:15

So it was accidentally placed in the children's section?

Sorry, but I think you are at fault here, no Asda.

Dropdeadfred · 14/05/2011 14:16

so did she actually BUY the book? i assumed you meant she flicked through it before you discovered it's content!!!
YABU

colette · 14/05/2011 14:22

she is 13. No I am not being unreasonable, I accept that I should definately not have let her buy it, I have already said that. I knew I would get this response but it is not just about my dd. Are you are quite happy that your local store stocks it ?

Asda stocks condoms, hard booze and turkey twizzlers.

All of which are, like a book called Serial Killers, fairly self explanatory, and none of which I'd want in my trolley for my 13 yr old.

What exactly did she think it was going to be about?????

You haven't asked, but YABVU. (and a bit loopy quite honestly)

ceebeegeebies · 14/05/2011 14:25

Does it really matter whether it is Asda that stock it as opposed to Waterstones/WHSmiths etc.?

Presumably some book shops are going to sell it so I am not sure why you are so offended by Asda (or any other supermarker stocking it).

It was in the wrong section by accident - these things happen.

I do think YABU tbh.

NerfHerder · 14/05/2011 14:26

Erm- it is an adult book for adults. YABU- what kind of person buys that for their 13yo?

TheOriginalNutcracker · 14/05/2011 14:26

Your fault tbh not Asda's, sorry.

My dd is 13 btw and she would have loved the book, as she is very interested in anything like that especially the forensic side of it all. So i don't even agree that it shouldn't be on sale.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 14/05/2011 14:27

Should have said, i'd not have bought it for dd, but she would have asked.

colette · 14/05/2011 14:27

TheOriginalNutcracker - trouble is it is not about the forensic side.

Yes I am happy that Asda (or any other shop) sells products that aren't suitable for children! You can't insist only child friendly products are sold - it's up to parents to make sure their children don't buy things they don't want them to have.

colette · 14/05/2011 14:29

It is not suitable for adults . My complaint to Asda was that they stocked it at all

TheOriginalNutcracker · 14/05/2011 14:29

I think it was just unfortunate that your dd got hold of it then, but not really asda's fault.

Dd would have liked it if it were full of gorey pics, cos she is odd like that Wink she is currently adiccted to watching the crime channel.

Also can I ask why, if your dd found it distressing, that she didn't tell you as soon as she opened it and not after she'd looked at the whole thing ?

This whole, I made an error of judgement (in letting my child have the book) but it's somehow the seller's fault drives me mad. Are we living in such a nanny state we are somehow no longer even responsible for what gets in our shopping trolley?

Are you related to the dad who trapped his daughter's fingers in the plane toilet door and tried to sue the airline?

onadifferentplanettoday · 14/05/2011 14:30

I don't think I have ever been in a supermarket that doesn't stock a range of True Crime type paperbacks in its bargain book selection.

RitaMorgan · 14/05/2011 14:31

It's not up to you to decide what books are suitable for adults Hmm

MumblingRagDoll · 14/05/2011 14:32

What did you think it would contain? Hmm YABU. It says SERIAL KILLERS onn the front...not "Pleasant stories for teen girls"

colette · 14/05/2011 14:33

Thanks
She did not look at it for long and did tell me. It would have been easier to bin it, accept that I should have looked at it at the time and move on. However I don't usually feel as strongly about anything I have about this. I knew there would be lots of 'well it is your fault- they can stock what they want'.

MumblingRagDoll · 14/05/2011 14:33

Collette....of course it is suitable for adults. Not ALL adults perhaps....but many adults have an interest in true crime. Your opinion is not a fact.

colette · 14/05/2011 14:34

oops the word nanny state has emerged. DM reader

Some people are interested in books like that. Why shouldn't asda stock it? The clue is in the title. You should check what your dd is reading. You can't blame asda for your mistake.

Hardly.

Not easy to get hold in this neck of the woods.

Your tale of woe sounds like the kind of crap they might be interested in though?
