I would really like everyone to please check if their local Asda store is stocking this book " True Crime- Serial Killers"

I went shopping with DD yesterday , as usual she was looking to buy something for herself. I should have taken more notice of the book ( the title is a clue , I knowBlush However I was busy and she likened it to a book we have already called " Great Mysteries of the 20th Century " . I really regret that I did not - DD could not sleep and was really distressed . The book is horrible and goes into great detail and has photos/ pictures of bodies!

I have phoned Asda to complain, and made it clear that a) this book should not be stocked
at all/should not have been printed.
b/ it should definately not be in the children's section !

Asda promotes itself as a family friendly store , this is an extreme book , I don't think it should be sold anywhere.

They are going to speak to the book buyers and will monitor the level of complaints HmmPlease phone Asda head office on 0800 952 0101 if you see it.
thanks

Why has this morphed into a thread about misery porn?

Otherwise, roffle at this thread Grin. Honestly Colette did you not know these true crime books existed? People love them. I would have thought Asda and Tesco would be among their biggest outlets.

GypsyMoth · 14/05/2011 15:18

i think threads do tend to morph....

Bucharest · 14/05/2011 15:19

Actually, it's my true crime lover Aunt's birthday next week. I was going to get her that book that I'm not sure whether we can talk about it or not, y'know, that one, from those sole threads, but I think this one sounds just right for her.

Is Ted Bundy in it? He's her hero. (and I'm not joking, she is seriously barmy about true life crime)

Kendodd · 14/05/2011 15:19

This thread is hilarious, please can it go in the classics!

K999 · 14/05/2011 15:21

Lol at Ted Bundy being your aunts hero....Grin

K999 · 14/05/2011 15:22

Actually, I used to have a penchant for the Krays....Grin

wannaBe · 14/05/2011 15:22

I bet the customer service department at the asda where you complained are having a good laugh.

Good publicity though - I bet the publishers will make a killing after this. Wink

TidyDancer · 14/05/2011 15:23

Oh FFS. Don't be so bloody ridiculous OP. You are hilarious. Supervise your own children, stop blaming ASDA for the fact that you weren't looking out for your DD.

If this is even real....

Colette, of course those books are utter depressing shitey worthless crap, OBVIOUSLY, but ... ffs woman, I cannot believe you are surprised by this. Have you been under a rock for the past 25 years? Books like this are part of the publishing landscape.

You seem to think the fact that they're nasty and disturbing is justification for a ban. Err, no. Doesn't work that way. Free country, responsible adults, personal autonomy, etc. Just try not to keep accidentally buying them for your child, m'kay?

K999 · 14/05/2011 15:26

This has got to be a wind up, surely?? Hmm

MirandaGoshawk · 14/05/2011 15:26

OP - I do sympathise. I hate it that people read this stuff too, and watch those films. I would rather they didn't exist. Hardly 'uplifting' are they?

NerfHerder · 14/05/2011 15:27

Mutilation and torture of children?
You do realise that "We need to talk about Kevin" was a bestseller and won lots of prizes.
Actually, on second thou TS, you don't actually seem that well-informed about literature.

Melly19MummyToBe · 14/05/2011 15:27

I've seen Fred Wests house. I know no-ones mentioned him but just thought I would. I can't remember, I was only little but my mum has photos of it apparantly. She's odd like that.

She also got out of the car once to take a photo of us all against a cliff face in Scotland and she was wearing one slipper and one shoe :o

MirandaGoshawk · 14/05/2011 15:28

But as others have said, it's a free country, thankfully. People are free to wallow in other people's misery, should they so wish.

MarioandLuigi · 14/05/2011 15:28

At 13 I loved reading books about serial killers :o

TotalChaos · 14/05/2011 15:29

wrt to your daughter's purchase, Asda can hardly be blamed. But if you feel that Asda shouldn't be stocking this sort of book even for adults, then fair enough, write in to their customer services (suspect it won't be taken very seriously).

Bucharest · 14/05/2011 15:31

Oh yes, she lent me the Fred West boxed set. (my 75 yr old shopping trolley pushing serial killer loving Aunt)

GypsyMoth · 14/05/2011 15:31

will your DD be doing history GCSE op??

wannaBe · 14/05/2011 15:31

well, in truth, crime is fascinating in a morbid kind of way. While many of us don't want to read about it I think there are a lot more that have a curiosity over it/who wonder exactly what it is that makes these people do the things they do.

As an aside, Myra Hindley died on the day my ds was born. And I checked the time to make sure it wasn't at the same time .

iEmbarassedMyself · 14/05/2011 15:33

Perhaps you should have a word with your DD about her reading books that just aren't suitable for her age, or are going to be distressing. If she can choose her own books, she needs to be able to recognise when it is going to give her nightmares and disturb her - if she can't do this, then you should be screening the books for her.
If I see the book in the children's section at ASDA, I'll let someone know that I think it should be moved, thanks for the heads up.

supermarketworker · 14/05/2011 15:37

wannabee you had nothing to fear my love as she is not really dead - she was remodelled so she could start a new life as a pensioner.

colette · 14/05/2011 15:41

Nerfherder I have read and liked ' let's talk about Kevin' But this thread is not about my academic qhualifications.
There is always going to be a fascination with crime, always has been it is human nature , but this book is very different, as in really sick to all the ones you have mentioned.
Amazon have stopped stocking it www.amazon.co.uk/Serial-Killers-MAURICE-CROW/dp/1848177186/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1305383537&sr=1-1. It was heavily reduced in Asda
