Please check if your local Asda is stocking this disturbing book

I would really like everyone to please check if their local Asda store is stocking this book " True Crime- Serial Killers"

I went shopping with DD yesterday , as usual she was looking to buy something for herself. I should have taken more notice of the book ( the title is a clue , I knowBlush However I was busy and she likened it to a book we have already called " Great Mysteries of the 20th Century " . I really regret that I did not - DD could not sleep and was really distressed . The book is horrible and goes into great detail and has photos/ pictures of bodies!

I have phoned Asda to complain, and made it clear that a) this book should not be stocked
at all/should not have been printed.
b/ it should definately not be in the children's section !

Asda promotes itself as a family friendly store , this is an extreme book , I don't think it should be sold anywhere.

They are going to speak to the book buyers and will monitor the level of complaints HmmPlease phone Asda head office on 0800 952 0101 if you see it.
thanks

OP, can i ask if you noticed the title of the book, or did dd just put it in the trolley without you noticing its title?

if this book was anywhere near the childrens section, well within reach of children, then i actually do think you have grounds for complaint, in a similar way that you'd be right to complain about pornographic magazines being on a low shelf.

I love reading about serial killers and murderers, but ones from quite a while ago, like Florence Maybrick or Dr Neill Cream. They are recounted as part of a favourite book of mine called "The Murders of the Black Museum 1870 - 1970".
And this is excellent as well.

"It is not suitable for adults"

Shock Grin

Had to stop reading the thread just to laugh at you there, sorry.

Pagwatch · 14/05/2011 18:17

"You need Prozac after reading a book?"

In fairness I have only read a bit of this thread and I need alcohol. Yet I am still reading and will just need more alcohol. Or the same amount of alcohol for longer.

mummissinghermind · 14/05/2011 18:31

pag can i have a large G&T pleaseSmile?

Pagwatch · 14/05/2011 18:40

Of course Grin

AimingForSerenity · 14/05/2011 18:47

FFS will we be expected to only read Mills and Boon next OP?

I wouldn't choose to read a book like this nor any of those miserable, abused children type stories but it doesn't mean that no-one else should be allowed to.

Can someone please send me a G&T too before I become even more grumpy?

transferbalance · 14/05/2011 18:50

op, you are obviously bu

I was in the car with my 8yo yesterday when the news report of the poor woman in Spain came on, had to explain what 'decapitated' was

It's a bad sad world out there

tiredemma · 14/05/2011 18:51

I love reading about True Crime. Fascinating.

I did get reprimanded at work though for reading a book about serial killers in view of the patients ( I worked in Forensic Mental Health)

Thrilling

Bullet- my FIL was invited to look at the articles in the Black Museum about 15-20 years ago. He was in Special Forces and somehow managed to get an invite.

mummissinghermind · 14/05/2011 18:53

pag i want someone to check if Asda sell black knickers that are unbleachable WinkGrin. Lovery G&T by the way.

annapolly · 15/05/2011 20:29

I kept reading it as I was worried, it belonged to my DC's nanny. She had dozens of this type of book.

I found it very strange for such a lovely girl who seemed to adore my DC's to be able to read this stuff.

My GP assured me that it is often people who are the furthest remomoved from the behaviour that find it so fascinating.

"My GP assured me that it is often people who are the furthest remomoved from the behaviour that find it so fascinating"
That may well be the case. Historical and fictional accounts of violent death and things related to them have been my obsession since I was 8 years old. I would not dream of hurting anyone or anything.

thisisyesterday · 15/05/2011 20:37

sorry OP, but YOU are responsible for what your child reads and sees. you should have checked the book before buying it. it is NOT asda's fault and they can't stop stocking stuff just because you don't like it

my friend's son has a serious nut allergy... do you think she should campaign for asda to stop selling nuts because they could kill him?

i have a child who is shit-scared of crocodiles... shall I campaign to get them banned from all toy stores

Hmm

you're trying to place blame with someone else when the fact is, YOU should be the one making sure your daughter's reading material is suitable.,

and just because you don't think that certain books should be published/sold doesn't mean everyone thinks the same way, so that is no argument at all

PaperView · 15/05/2011 20:43

Asda didn't print the book. Your local store probably does not have any control over what is stocked or not stocked.

It clearly says SERIAL KILLERS on the front. It was never going to have pictures of fluffy bunnies and lovely flowers.

If it was in the childrens section then it was probably an accident.

this thread is seriously bizarre.

people needing prozac in order to finish a book and then discussing it with the gp? presumably you had already been prescribed the prozac for other reasons and didn't just get a prescription so you could finish reading the book?

TheFlyingOnion · 15/05/2011 20:59

annapolly proofreads her nanny's books.

Can we have a moment just to appreciate that please?

Hulababy · 15/05/2011 21:22

Collette - Amazon have not stopped sticking the book. It is temporarily out of stock. However it can still be ordered through Amazon marketplace including stores where the order is fulfilled by Amazon.

Not a book I would want to read personally.

I am still bewildered why you actually bought this book for your DD - why didn't you at least flick through it. With a title like that even at 13y I'd be wanting to check it before buying it for a 13y child.
