I would really like everyone to please check if their local Asda store is stocking this book " True Crime- Serial Killers"

I went shopping with DD yesterday , as usual she was looking to buy something for herself. I should have taken more notice of the book ( the title is a clue , I knowBlush However I was busy and she likened it to a book we have already called " Great Mysteries of the 20th Century " . I really regret that I did not - DD could not sleep and was really distressed . The book is horrible and goes into great detail and has photos/ pictures of bodies!

I have phoned Asda to complain, and made it clear that a) this book should not be stocked
at all/should not have been printed.
b/ it should definately not be in the children's section !

Asda promotes itself as a family friendly store , this is an extreme book , I don't think it should be sold anywhere.

They are going to speak to the book buyers and will monitor the level of complaints HmmPlease phone Asda head office on 0800 952 0101 if you see it.
thanks

thanks, iEmbarassedmyself for going against the tide. I have talked to her about this , even though I think it was more my fault. Although I have never come across a book with this amount of detail . It is extremely misogynistic

OP sorry that your daughter was upset, most serial killers victims are women, hence the inherent misogyny, would have thought that was obvious.

GypsyMoth · 14/05/2011 15:49

but its a true crime book, based on true events!!

your job is to discuss it with her and acknowledge these things have and do and still will, happen!! not leave her scared.

how does she cope in history lessons???

pinkhebe · 14/05/2011 15:49

it's out of stock at amazon, have you thought about leaving a scathing review?

pinkhebe · 14/05/2011 15:50

actually it looks quite interesting

Melly19MummyToBe · 14/05/2011 15:51

Exactly, I mean, what about that nutter in Tenerife the other day who hacked off some womans head and ran down the street with it? Although he's not a serial killer as far as I'm aware but he has serious MH issues apparantly and was released from a MH hospital 3 months ago.

colette · 14/05/2011 15:52

Tillytulip - she has read crime books before , as I have said this is very different

MumblingRagDoll · 14/05/2011 15:54

How is it mysogonistic? Does it have titilating pictures of victims before murder? Are they calling the victims names?

jimswifein1964 · 14/05/2011 15:56

There are 23 on online ASDA; lets hope it was the 99p one you bought, not the dearer ones!

MumblingRagDoll · 14/05/2011 15:57

I really want to know why is was mysoginistic....genuinely interested.

Wordwork · 14/05/2011 16:02

While I agree that the OP was certainly at fault in allowing a book with that title to stay in her trolley, I do agree that these books are offensive in the extreme. They often make a fetish of the woman-as-victim, and for some readers part of the pleasure must come from the vicarious participation in the crime -- look at the'crossbow killer' or whatever he called himself, studying serial killers and becoming one, clearly revelling in the stock narrative of the serial killer that we have created as a literary genre. I think women are victimised by these books.

well wordwork one could argue then that an underwear catalogue is giving certain people vicarious pleasure. Or reportage of fires, murders, car crashes and many other incidents.

One cannot withold information on things just in case a perve likes it. Weirdo's like the cross bow killer would have found his thrills SOEMWHERE if not in a book like this.

MumblingRagDoll · 14/05/2011 16:12

beertricks How do you mean?

annapolly · 14/05/2011 16:13

I agree this is a discusting book. I first saw this book when my DC's nanny had it.

I was deeply depressed after reading it and could not get it out of my mind.

It is not your usual factual true crime book. It is something you would expect a serial killer to write. It writes as though the killer is a hero and glorifies the suffering caused.

There is enjoyment in the graphic descriptions of the abuse and torture of children and their suffering is extreme and beyond imagining.

I needed prozac to get over reading it. It certainly is not on a par with CSI.

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:14

I very much doubt that ANYONE reads a book about serial killers and thinks "that looks like the sort of job I'd be into. I think I'll give it a go" Hmm

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:14

prozac??? Shock

I have no doubt that it's a horrible, misogynistic book.

However, adults can decide for themselves what they read/buy.

annapolly - why on earth did you keep reading it if it was upsetting you so much?

MumblingRagDoll · 14/05/2011 16:21

annapolly has written a far better post than the OP about why it was so disturbing.

Beertricks is it as bad as all that?

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:23

I'm still wondering why anyone would need prozac after reading a book? Just put it down!

mumblingragdoll, your name wasn't scaring me until BTP drew attention to it, but now it does seem very scary. I read a Stephen King story with a doll like that in it. Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/05/2011 16:44

Yes nevermind the bleeding true crime book i'm going to complain to ASDA about MumblingRagDoll's name! Grin

MumblingRagDoll · 14/05/2011 17:24
