am being calm but every so often panic strikes me - ds is fine about it, it's just me fretting about roads to cross/ money for the canteen - will it get lost/stolen, what about the lockers, arghhh ! Plus,as with the beginning of every term,I'll miss him - I love having him here in the holidays !
It also means that I have no excuses not to sit at my desk and work on the job I'm meant to finish by the end of Seot...

Oh Mary I know exactly how you feel. I just saw my dd out of the door for her first day at secondary school and I feel sick.

bellavita · 02/09/2008 08:13

Hi MAS - DS1 has started secondary school today - he looked soooo grown up in his uniform. I kept asking if he had got this and that (we did pack his bag together) but I was still panicking - he was like yeeeessssss mum go away!

He has gone from a smallish primary school to Yr7 with 9 forms in!

The bus leaves at 8.20 from the village, but he insisted on leaving the house at 7.55 to go the stop (literally 5 mins walk), but then his friend was walking down the street so I am glad he had someone to walk with and he had arranged to meet another friend at the stop - the bus picks up at a couple of stops here and there are two buses so not all of his friends had been allocated the same bus no on their pass.

I am going to be worrying all day although I am sure he will be fine. He had his breakfast at 6.45 and I am thinking to myself that he will be hungry by 10.00am!

I am fretting also about losing dinner money etc or his bus pass (he took packed lunch to primary and if he forgot it, I would just walk down and hand it in).

Good luck for your ds.

Only 8 hours to go LOL. I'm gonna do something now to occupy my mind. Got a busy day planned to keep my mind of it.

bellavita · 02/09/2008 08:19

I have still got DS2 here - primary goes back tomorrow.

But, I am going to fumigate their bedrooms, have already stripped their beds and got the washing machine on.

The whole house really needs a good clean and tidy up which is what I am going to do (would prefer to do it tomorrow when I have no children, but am doing an extra day time shift!)

God, I feel sick already! His bus should be leaving in a couple of mins - I could get the car out and drive past the stop to see if he is ok ......

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 08:21

nametaken & bellavita (((hugs))) !
we're going to have his hair cut this afternoon and will do the school route,or at least the 2 roads..I'm hoping he'll walk the first few days with friends ds from up the road.. I'm sure it'll all be ok..it's something that they have to deal with and am sure things will get lost etc but we have to step back now and let them get on with it ! it's just that ds is much less savvy than I was at 11

I'm fretting too maryann.
He can't wait but he seems so little still. And it's such a big place. Mostly dreading the homework TBH

DH starting new job

DS#2 going into Yr1 which I remember as being a bit scary for both of my older ones and they had the loveliest teacher in the world. DS#2's is an unknown quantity.

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 08:22

hugs to you too Orm -I'm just rubbish at change !

I'm just the same - ds1 starts on Thursday too and he's fine, but I'm (secretly) gibbering. It's a big step - and I think I'm projecting a bit, remembering me at secondary school and how scary it was. And yes, I'm fretting about roads, and lunch money, and bigger kids and...just about everything really. Ds2 goes back tomorrow so it will be just ds1 and me - I think I might take him out for lunch, just the two of us. It only seems five minutes since he started in reception...

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 08:25

! I will be thinking of all of you and your dcs

OP posts:
bellavita · 02/09/2008 08:28

oh god yes the homework - DS1 hates doing homework and I am not sure he appreciates how much he is going to get compared to primary.

Will be thinking about you all too!

Perhaps we should reconvene about 4.30 so we can say our lo's are back home and safe and made it through the 1st day without any mishaps?

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 08:30

good idea !
homework will be a shock - there'll be lots..he is quite good at doing it,but often grumbles and maths homework is always very fraught. He'll be doing German too this term, which I certainly won't be able to help with !

My DS has chosen to do Spanish. He is very good at maths but actually hates the subject .

Less than 10 mins to go and the school bus will be pulling into the school gates.

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2008 08:39

I was in exactly the same position as you this time last year! I spent the entire day on the school website, checking what they were doing!

Wishing all your lo's much luck and fun today. I'm going to work to prepare for our new Yr 7's arrival tomorrow!

bellavita · 02/09/2008 08:43

oh yes Maureen - school website now theres a thought!

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 08:51

I've added school website to my favourites page !!
MaureenMLove - I do remember you posting this time last year and thinking that it'll be our turn next year ! sounds as though your dc managed very well

She was absolutely fine! Like you, I was a wreck. She came back from school on the first day, like she'd been there forever. She goes back tomorrow and her uniform has been ironed and hung up, by her since Saturday!!

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2008 09:15

Meant to add, we have the same revolving notice board on the website, as the students have in the Foyer at school, so I knew what time she was in assembly, what time she was having her lunch and any special things that were going on for Yr7! DH was bored stupid of me saying, 'ah, she's off to tutor time now' or 'oh, its lunch time!'

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 09:35

so glad she's had a good first year !

Me too. Very strange to wave ds off at 8am in his new uniform. Had a full 30 mins to kill with no arguing, just me and dd. In the end we set off for primary far too early and arrived to an empty playground. Felt a bit lost just taking one child to school.
Will be watching the clock all day until ds walks through the door at 4pm. Hope he wants to share his day with me.

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 09:45

check back here this afternoon to see how he got on maltloafeater !

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 02/09/2008 09:46

I bet he doesn't! If he's anything like DD she was so full of herself and I kept saying, 'and then what happened?' Like a excited 5 year old! She kept sighing and saying 'oh mummy! Nothing happened then! Its not that interesting!!!'

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 09:48

ds has done that at primary - I never knew what went on, or else he'd tell me stuff that happened a year or so back ! he claimed not to know what he'd eaten for lunch most days

roisin · 02/09/2008 11:50

ds1 started today. He admitted to being anxious, and has been very quiet for a few days, but seems OK.

I'm far more worried than he is, but secretly!

Fortunately I'm at school today, so am not thinking about him constantly.

I can't wait for him to get home and tell me all about it. He is in the next town, on the bus, so won't get back until after 4 pm.

fortyplus · 02/09/2008 11:55

Mine are in yrs 9 & 10 now. I went through all the worry, too, but honestly they were fine. Of course they were a bit nervous on the very first day but the teachers are experts at keeping them busy so that they don't have time to worry. They soon find their way around - on the first day they had ^th formers guiding them everywhere and showing them what to do.

By the end of the first week my wussy ds1 was saying how fantastic it was to have a special room and teacher for each subject instead of being stuck in the same classroom all ady (even though he adored his teacher).

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/09/2008 12:05

that's comforting fortyplus ! I get anxious with any major change in life anyway..hope we'll all feel ok by Friday
