am being calm but every so often panic strikes me - ds is fine about it, it's just me fretting about roads to cross/ money for the canteen - will it get lost/stolen, what about the lockers, arghhh ! Plus,as with the beginning of every term,I'll miss him - I love having him here in the holidays !
It also means that I have no excuses not to sit at my desk and work on the job I'm meant to finish by the end of Seot...

Oh I'm just the same - it's the control freak trying to get out! When they go off and tackle something new and I know I'm not there to reassure them. I've had to try really hard over the years not to let them know how I feel and just let them go and get on with it.

DS1 went rally driving with a friend last week - 14 years old and being taught how to do hand brake turns! I nearly freaked when he was invited but managed to smile and say @how lovely - you'll have a great time!' whilst secretly thinking OHMYGODWHATIFHECRASHESHOWFASTCANHEGOWHATIFHEHITSATREE!!!!!

Ohhhh, MAS, you poor love! I remember how anxious I was when DD1 started, & she only had a 10 minute walk with a lollipop lady on the main road - and also how sad and end-of-an-era I felt when DS2 (my baby ) started - you'll be getting both feelings at once!

I bet he's had a great time though. What time is he due home?

bellavita · 02/09/2008 16:26

Hello all

DS1 bounded in about 5 mins ago and said whats for tea I'm starving!

I asked him if he had a good time and he says yeah - I had chicken tikka and rice for lunch!

Seems to have found his way about ok without getting lost, managed the bus and has had 5 different teachers and done drama and pe on his first day (those were my worst subjects!)

He is absolutely full of beans!

I asked him if he wanted to go back tomorrow and he said of course!

So, worrying over, till tomorrow, will probably worry for the rest of the week until I know that he has settled in properly.

WendyWeber · 02/09/2008 16:26

Oh he hasn't gone yet! (Must read thread titles properly ) You will post on Thursday afternoon with an update, won't you?

roisin, is DS1 home yet? Please post your update later ]grin]

Oh you're all making me very nervous! DD1 starts secondary school on Monday and I too am a wreck worrying about her. She is a bit anxious and I am glibly telling her she will be just fine and inwardly thinking OMG my baaaaaaby!

magentadreamer · 02/09/2008 16:54

DD survived her first day! Yay!!! She arrived home looking very grown up and informed me she'd managed the road by herself - the lolly pop lady wasn't there as the local primary isn't back till tomorrow. Nearly got lost on the tour of the school -she stopped to put her PE stuff in her locker but they all came back for her! Was worried about lunchtime as she is one of only 20 from her old school there but she sat with two boys from her old school for her dinner. Thankfully her 3 PE lessons are on two days so no having to remember her kit on 3 seperate days! So far everything she went to school with is still with her! I'm just so relieved the first day is over... I think it was more traumatic for me then her! My baby is now at High School!!

bellavita · 02/09/2008 16:59

Brilliant magentadreamer.

ds1 had a fab day and everything went smoothly. They have 6 lessons per day on the timetable, and had 5 'normal lessons' today, so he's met lots of his new teachers already.

Today he has learned that:

  • If he forget their performing arts uniform for drama lessons he will get detention
  • It's hard to find somewhere to sit in the refectory at lunchtime
  • His bus goes very slowly and he only just got to school in time#

He coped with the bus and buying his lunch, and he hasn't lost anything yet or had a major crisis, so that's great!

We'll have to monitor this. It's a service bus and is due there in plenty of time. But if it's regularly late he'll have to get the earlier one. But the earlier one will probably get him there way too early

WendyWeber · 02/09/2008 20:22

Have you got a copy of his timetable, roisin? I know it's good for them to take charge of their own routine & belongings, but for the first few weeks it doesn't hurt to give them a nudge the night before

Glad all today's newbies have had a pretty good day - hope all the newbie mums feel much better now!

roisin · 02/09/2008 20:38

Oh yes! I have done an extra copy of his full timetable (with room numbers and teachers' names on), in case he loses the one he has.

I've also put up a timetable in the hall with days coloured blue when he needs his performing arts kit and red when he needs his PE kit. Then he has the two bags hanging up on the hooks in the hall.

He's OK at taking responsibility for his own stuff, but he does need a help to get the routines designed and in place.
