Just do not do what some people do in our school which is put the kid in late after school club on a Friday when tests are out and then go and harass the head teacher on pick up to submit an appeal that weekend if they do not make it.

Silly twins made it through the examination stage of the Radley Keys Award selection process and have been called back to the final stage on Saturday, which apparently compromises a workshop and interview. I'm a bit - stunned? Relieved they were both invited back, daunted because we haven't prepared for interviews at all and we have super limited time in which to work on this skill!

The boys are absolutely over the moon; Radley is their number one school by far and they are dreaming of both being chosen, and boarding together.

Oh wow congratulations Mamakiwi. What would you think about them boarding? I guess that bodes well for your other exams too?

MamaKiwi · 07/10/2025 11:56

@Araminta1003 do they really?! That's... actually rather genius, although terribly poor form and I wouldn't dare. I am quite impressed that others have thought to do it though, poor headteacher must need boundaries of steel.

@Pipsquiggle I absolutely feel you on being utterly consumed by this blasted process; I don't think I've slept properly since about June and results day is a looming spectre in my mind. For better or for worse, it's almost over now.

@Magnificentkitteh thank you! Still some way to go - but they're great kids, I'm hoping they stand out on the day. I think boarding would be good for them; their sisters have additional SEN and the chaos at home is not particularly conducive to study. They have always been quite independent and they've had to be very adaptable, they're hopeful and excited about the prospect of potentially living away from home. I will miss them like crazy though - they are such a joy to have here with us.

Magnificentkitteh · 07/10/2025 12:00

I would have thought it's par for the course for a headteacher in a grammar area with the possibility of headteacher appeal to be lobbied.

Good luck to them in that case! How many kids will they be interviewing, do you know? Pretty much every boarding school story I ever read has twins.

troppibambini6 · 07/10/2025 12:32

@Firsttimer31

Sure no probs at all. One main things I wasnt keen on was the head although I’ve heard he potentially may not be there for much longer although this could just be gossip. I felt like he had given up on the kids before they had got there he gave a very odd speech saying not all kids are lions some are just normal cats basically saying that’s fine and that’s just the way life is.
I don’t think the idea of the way they ask the kids to prep for the lesson rather than being set homework would work well for Ds.
I have 3 friends who have recently moved their kids from there as they were very unhappy with the standard of teaching.

I have other friends who have kids there again who are very underwhelmed.

Everyone is different though some might find it a great fit. I’ve got a friend whose daughter has just started and is loving it. I wish I had liked it as it’s a 5 minute walk from our house.

“I would have thought it's par for the course for a headteacher in a grammar area with the possibility of headteacher appeal to be lobbied.”

Yes, of course, but most people wait until Monday morning. It is a joke in our school and quite obvious who is going to be there on Friday evening.

CheerfulMuddler · 07/10/2025 14:10

Congratulations to your sons, MamaKiwi! Twins must be double the stress.
300 kids sitting for 9 music places today - much worse odds than the grammar. DS doesn't think he'll get through to the next round, but he enjoyed the morning off school. Oh well.

Gymrabbit · 07/10/2025 14:28

Bexley people. Our Head has confirmed that the result will be the 17th October. So the schools will have to change the policy on who can attend the open evening.

Bexley website says by Friday 17th so I’m still hoping it will be before then.

I love this for you all. I will be routing for both to make it through.

This is just so so frustrating 😩 Really don’t want to be taking DC to an open day without knowing if it’s even a possibility!
Basically means all the grammar open days will be rammed into a single week potentially? Am assuming they won’t run during half term 😂

Couldn’t agree more! So confusing to know what to do about open days.

Gymrabbit · 07/10/2025 15:00

i don’t seem them changing the dates. I will assume they will just say you can attend without a result.

Magnificentkitteh · 07/10/2025 15:03

Gosh I feel for you guys. We did open days for the grammars in the summer but that makes more sense as you can decide whether to sit the test. Looking round days before the result is a bit different.

That said there are non selective schools I haven't visited but may put on the form as they are v long shot possibilities that I didn't want to fall in love with.

I think a previous poster nailed it.. "look at all these prizes you could have won" . Basically the system is flawed.

JLbaby · 07/10/2025 15:20

I spoke to Bexley grammar this morning to see if they planned on changing their open day dates but the lady said they can’t change the dates for various reasons so tickets will be very limited as everyone will want to look round, not just kids who have passed. Even she said it’s very unfair on the kids as they may love the school and then not pass the exam.

But also I think it is good for them to be able to see the school in y5 so they know what they are working towards it can be hard to motivate and say actually you can only see the prize if you pass the test

Magnificentkitteh · 07/10/2025 17:21

Mind you the school that wows the kids round here is the one with the robotics lab and sailing yacht in the playground. The super selectives look a bit poor in comparison. It is undersubscribed.

Agree, we looked in year 5. However, according to the official process we should be looking now. This doesn't seem to make sense as you'd have to registar the May before. I am convinced it's all a way to filter people out.

Would have loved to look in year 5 but last year the Bexley grammars were very clear that you could only visit if you already have the 11+ results!

I just feel like there has got to be a better way 😂 Also makes no sense for the results to come out an entire week later than they did last year 🙄

100% , as that is illogical

Dadsbabe · 07/10/2025 20:27

Hey anyone rang to Trafford consortium for exam results date?

SatsumaCat · 07/10/2025 23:02

We've decided not to do bexley grammar open day, we've already got a DC there so we do know the school (although never been to an open day due to Covid, nor any of the other grammars). If DS passes realistically that's where he'll go - the other grammars would have to do a bloody good open day to make a longer journey worthwhile) so no point making the 11+ result more fraught.

Hey @Magnificentkitteh
do you mind sharing which school this is?
is it Haverstock? thats the only undersubscribed school I know of in the area?

Magnificentkitteh · 08/10/2025 10:33

No this is north London sorry for the confusion
