Do teachers get paid for running revision sessions in the school holiday?

As the subject says.....just wondering.
Obviously I hope they do, but you hear so much about teachers working so much during school holidays that I wonder where the line is.

While I'm here, thanks to the teachers who are running them; DS2 really benefits.

Yes and No.
It depends on the school, HT etc.
Some schools will pay teachers for these, others coerce staff into it.

Sevenandahalf · 08/04/2025 13:30

At my current school, no.
At my old school, we all had to run them, but you only got paid if you were a maths or English teacher.

Bananagram24 · 08/04/2025 13:31

Doing two this week (secondary teacher, independent school). We have been told that we have to do them, with no extra pay offered (and not much thanks either!). You could in theory refuse, but it’s hard when all other departments are doing them. I am a HoD, so I tend to do ours so my department colleagues don’t have to come in as well.

Octavia64 · 08/04/2025 13:31

Not in recent years

HundredPercentUnsure · 08/04/2025 13:32

Nope.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/04/2025 13:48

No, got paid nothing above salary for any extra hours.

Lol 😂 no!

BumbleBeegu · 08/04/2025 13:48

Nope! I’m a primary teacher and have to run Year 6 SATS revision this week and next week - 5 mornings this week, 4 mornings next week. My holidays…but I’m working for free! I have to plan these revision sessions too, so I’ve been planning each afternoon for the following days sessions.

Obviously, this means that I have not been able to go anywhere myself 🤷‍♀️😩

I also had to go on a 5 day residential to Italy with a group of Pupil Premium children recently…it was bloody awful! They weren’t even children from my class but I was told that as I’m the only ‘single and unencumbered’ staff member, it ‘makes sense’ for me to go, with the Head also going. I was completely exhausted after, and we were ‘on duty’ 24 hours a day…I wasn’t given an option to say no (was informed I had to go) and it cost me a bloody fortune. I had to put my pets in boarding and renew my passport as it was out of date. I couldn’t afford this (the passport or the boarding fees) but was not reimbursed, even though school paid for every single thing for the PP children, including passports, new bags, new clothes and all their toiletries!

I've never worked in or heard of a state school that paid.

Newmumhere40 · 08/04/2025 13:50

While we are on the subject...they don't get paid for covering other teacher's (I'll/ out on trips) classes either.

Why are you doing this over Easter?! That's insane, advocate for yourself!!

Frowningprovidence · 08/04/2025 13:51

The school my son went to didn't pay. I checked and was outraged! They worked one week of Easter and may half term for free.

Genuinely, thank you for even considering this, most parents think it's a given.

WonderingWanda · 08/04/2025 13:54

Actually I think my school do offer some pay for this but I still don't do it. I have my own kids fo look after and I need the break. The kids who really need to be there won't show up anyway.

TeenToTwenties · 08/04/2025 13:54

@BumbleBeegu I think it is atrocious that a school is running Easter sessions for SATs. The school has had 7 years to teach the children, and they are only 10/11. They don't need unnecessary pressure.

rosemarble · 08/04/2025 13:55

Thanks. I have in passing (emails) thanked the staff running the classes and made sure my son realises they are giving up their time.

The teacher I know who is a senior school teacher in a humanities subject is paid to do them because she mentioned it to me as being easy money. I don't know if she had a choice on whether to do it.

What?? I'd be looking for a new school - they are massively taking advantage of you.

PinkPonyClubber · 08/04/2025 13:57

I did pay in secondary schools for a trust. We did pay but it depended. It was a fixed rate regardless and I don’t think SLT got it.

GrandHighPoohbah · 08/04/2025 14:00

My DC's secondary school run an absolutely fantastic revision programme of after school, Saturday and holiday classes. I am friends with one of the teachers - they definitely get paid for it in our school and rightly so in my opinion.

CanOfMangoTango · 08/04/2025 14:00

At our school teachers are paid. But they're only expected to give up an afternoon if non core, or a day if core.

cabbageking · 08/04/2025 14:07

They should be but most schools do not have the budget to pay.
The cost would be discussed in any plans to offer summer clubs or after school clubs when thinking about putting them on. You might look at directed hours and see if there is some wiggle room there or rejig responsibilities perhaps

lovemetomybones · 08/04/2025 14:09

no we don’t, or any extra sessions at weekends or after school, nor do we get paid for residentials. There is an expectation that all teachers participate.

TellReign · 08/04/2025 14:10

Over a decade ago we got paid for the Easter or holiday revision sessions (at the first school I worked at.) Even then we would come in say 2/3 days and only be paid for one day. All other schools I have worked at there has never been any pay - but you are always expected to do the sessions.
