Hi all,
I really enjoyed reading previous 11 plus support threads and I think we’re probably ready for a new cohort of year 5s start their prep?

so I thought I’d set up one for next year. All welcome!

we are trying for dame Alice Owen. DD currently has group tutoring once a week but we are looking to increase to twice a week before Xmas.

i am trying to get her to do a cgt GL 15 min tests a day very unsuccessfully! This half term is going to be all about embedding routine 😀

look forward to meeting other parents preparing

Maybe a silly question, but a random thought popped into my mind ; how do they ensure there is a balance between girls and boys in mixed schools if it's just based on results?

They don’t. One of the mixed Trafford grammars year 7s who have just started are almost 70% boys this year and apparently similar last year.

@AquaPeer sorry to hear of your loss.

@troppibambini6 you're right, and I think as soon as one person says they found it easy the rest follow so as not to look less clever than their peers! When my oldest did it only two of his friends said it was hard and they both passed with good scores (one very high) so I know finding it easy doesn't equal a pass. Having said that my DS has been pretty borderline throughout and has always come out of mocks accurately predicting how well (or not!) he had done so I won't get my hopes up too much.

@AndiePandi , which tuition centre was this? Do you mean the format was identical rather than the questions? I know Newell pride themselves on being as close to the real exam as possible as they get a lot of feedback from their numerous students every year - we did a few of their mocks and DS said they were similar but not identical and there were a couple of key differences. I just can;t work out how a tuition centre would know the exact questions in advance. And yes it is worrying if it's someone like Newell as they seem to have 100s of students!

@IsThatYouPam
I’m not sure which centre they were referring to as it wasn’t mentioned on the message, however, there was mention of some mum chat going on after school about the test, and a few if them who attend the same centre said the same things too. However, like someone else has mentioned before- there should be no way that it’s identical, but maybe it was a comprehension text that they had come across before maybe?

I don’t think they will be referring to Newell Tuition as my son has taken mocks there before and my son didn’t mention anything about it.

In co-ed grammars they don’t ensure gender ratios. So I have heard that it’s quite skewed at Latymer as well. Our friend’s daughter joined this year and said that there were much fewer girls overall in the school. And also in her batch, its majority boys.

Results have apparently started coming out via email for DAO! Anyone received it yet? I'm still refreshing my inbox!

You should be extremely proud of her... no matter the results, I admire and respect the amount of effort that's been put in by these kids - we can't dispute that x

TwoProngedFork · 18/09/2025 13:21

It's no for us too.
So proud of all the work and effort put in.
Now we wait for Latymer.
Congrats to all who made round 2. Time to batten down the hatches!!! Good luck!!!

sweetmelody · 18/09/2025 13:27

DD didn’t make it either. Congratulations to everyone that did!

Magnificentkitteh · 18/09/2025 13:28

Indeed, very proud of them. All the best to everyone still waiting

Lamarais · 18/09/2025 13:29

They all put in so much work. And they are so little still! Amazing kids.

Kavita12 · 18/09/2025 13:57

DS scraped through somehow. I'm so proud! It looks like a very busy week ahead. Congratulations to all the kids for their effort.

Are the VR marks combined with the English and Maths or are the stage 2 results separate from stage 1?

Does someone who’s ranked 325 have an equal chance to get into DAO as someone who’s ranked 1?
any help would be appreciated!

Tiredlady1 · 18/09/2025 14:48

Congrats to those of you who made it through.

I know that all the children on here have supportive parents and they will thrive no matter the setting.

My understanding is this only kicks in if you’re marginal, ie you share a rank with someone else and you’re at cut off. The VR then comes into play. I think it’s described somewhere on eleven plus forum.

Yes I believe you get a score for each subject and then they're combined to give you a new ranking. So at this stage, your first round ranking can go up or down depending on how you perform on the other exams. If you are tie with another candidate then one subject may be a decider (depends on the school). For example at a local school to us, if the overall rank is tied, VR scores are looked at... if they're the same then the look at NVR, and so on and so forth. Anyone know anything different?

Hard agree. If you care enough about their kids' education to get deeply involved on this thread, you're the kind of parent they need on their side.

Tiredlady1 · 18/09/2025 15:32

I also understand the disappointment, I would be pissed as there are so many cruel parts about these tests aswell ! Especially for 10-year-olds

All 3 marks are combined to get a total score and then rank is given on the basis of the final score. So yes, VR score matters. If 2 students have the same final score, then the one who has a higher VR score is ranked first. If VR is also same, then English scores are considered and the child who has a higher Eng score will be ranked first.

Yes, this is how it works at DAO. VR score takes precedence if the final scores are same. After that English and if the score is still same then distance from school is the tie breaker.
