DD passed everything except maths, which means she can't to the sixth form she had her heart set on - or any sixth form, I feel so sad for her, even with good passes in every other subject she won't be able to continue the path she had hoped, she now feels like she's failed completely.

We now need to try and find a college somewhere that she can actually get to as we live rurally and public transport is very limited.

Have they confirmed this today? My DN failed his maths but the 6th form college allowed him to retake while doing his A levels.

Messen · 22/08/2024 12:27

@Johaanah I'd go and plead with the school. That's very crap they won't let her stay if maths was the only lower one. It makes me cross when they toss kids out especially if she does not want to do anything maths related. What about dyscalculic kids? What are they supposed to do?

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 22/08/2024 12:27

Went up by two or three grades in everything, passed all 5 and above, very pleased considering was predicted 3s and 4s.

Popfan · 22/08/2024 12:28

Thanks @Mummyoflittledragon the relief is immense!

Seasidelass · 22/08/2024 12:28

DD did very well but the main worry was maths. She was desperately hoping for a 4 to just pass but got a 5 - so proud of her, she really put everything into passing maths and she did. She has what she needs for her chosen college and more - a very happy day indeed.

she hasn’t had an easy time with moving schools due to bullying and health issues so this is just such a relief.

school is looking at history as the grade boundaries seem to contradict the grade given so we are getting that checked out, just to be sure. Still happy with what she got but she wants to make sure it’s accurate which is fair enough.

well done to everyone today - it’s not been an easy 5 years for this cohort.

Can any one tell me what a *1 means ds got it for pe after getting great marks in mocks and excepting a high pass mark for it but I have no idea what this means has he failed it? literally no idea

Did he to BTEC rather than GCSE?

3's and 2's ( mostly expected) but considering some of their mocks were 1's they've made better progress which I am proud of.

It's sad they feel the need to hide their results and not partake in the normal celebratory stuff. It's a very different story when they don't pass and feel worthless

Simular here, except my DD got two grade 4s (worked very hard for) but scored 2 in everything else. We are quietly celebrating the 4s but sad that this is probably the end of school life for her and she will have to consider work, but that will be difficult considering her special needs...DD has been crying all day and is very disappointed

Agree with this, it seems massively unfair.

Curlyshabtree · 22/08/2024 12:52

My DTs both passed all their exams. DTD got 5 9’s and 4 8’s which is exceptional. DTS got 5 7’s, 1 9, 2 6’s and a 5. He is really disappointed to only get a 6 in Eng Lang. It’s one of his A level choices and wants to resit.
They both have enough to get into college and do their chosen A Levels.
Can you resit if you have passed?

So sorry, that sounds really unfair. I know you're rural (and this may not apply with the transport restrictions) but if possible I would advise looking at schools with sixth forms that are in towns/cities with colleges. They are often a lot more flexible with entry requirements as recruitment is a huge priority for them - they're competing with the colleges for students and get less funding the fewer students they have, so it's in their interests to get as large a cohort as possible.

I teach in a school in a large city and we only keep a small fraction into sixth form as loads of them are swayed by the shiny sixth form colleges and perceive them as much better because it's new and exciting (even though our class sizes are far smaller and our results are pretty good - at times we've had some students leave and then pop up a few weeks into term having realised the grass isn't always greener!). But because of this we try to recruit as many into sixth form as we can, and I know we have maths resit students etc. Conversely I live in a town that's an hour's bus ride away from the colleges and most students try to stay on at the excellent local school sixth form - which is hugely stringent with their entry requirements like you're describing.

I hope you get something sorted out for her, best of luck.

Well done to your young people and you amazing parents too for staying sane (ish).

When we first got up I think I felt the most nervous I ever have in my life bar the moment when contractions started just over 16 years ago Grin

DD passed the lot and even got a few 6a and 7s which was a lovely surprise.

Best of all though was she got 4 in maths after struggling all through school and getting a 2 at Christmas mocks. I almost burst into tears when she read that one out ... honesty for her, this result is like another kid getting a 9, the effort she has had to put in.

Also very pleased to be told by school that to go into 6th form it's not essential to resit which has been criteria if a 5 wasn't achieved.

They are hugely recommending/pressuring this however as they say without a 5 whatever she does after A levels and regardless of what she chooses after this 4 will massively hold her back.

Any thoughts from you more informed folks? Surely if she's looking at uni and has the points she needs a low gcse pass in a subject not even linked to studies, should not hold her back?

Likewise the f she looks a job after and has decent A levels a "weaker " (their words) maths pass won't go against her?

Because as much I think she bloody amazing getting what she did I'm not optimistic she can push up to a 5.

Politely - your school are talking shit.
Unless she wants to go onto something STEM related, a 4 in Maths will not hold her back. And even if she did want to do something STEM, a 4 doesn’t prohibit any career pathway, it just might mean she can’t go to some very selective universities, like UCL. Universities offer on Level 3 quals!
I am a qualified careers advisor and work in a university outreach team, so promise you my information is more accurate than your school.

Edited to add. Your DD has done brilliantly. Don’t let a daft school policy take away the shine

Definitely not worthless. I got Ds and Es at gcse and I now own and run a private nursery and hoping to open a forest achool next year, after being told that I wouldn't amount to much and got pushed onto a childcare course at 16 because "less clever" children did that.

School was horrendous for me and I didn't fit in.

Your child will find their groove, just like I and hundreds of others did

Zubomama · 22/08/2024 13:02

DS did incredibly well and exceeded his predictions, I am super proud as this year has been tough. ADD Diagnosis in Nov means he got extra time and that has definitely helped!

This board has kept me sane. Thanks everyone! and well done to all the kids!

My DS needs 7s in Maths, Physics and DT, and a 5 in English language.

He seems completely unfazed by this. Anyone would think a 7 in physics is a walk in the park. I gave up physics in disgust when I was 13.

I'm trying to copy his lack of concern. And trying to decide where to take him for a celebratory brunch.

And he got 8 in Maths & Physics, 7 in DT, Chemistry and Biology, 6 in English Lit & Lang, Geography and 5 in German.

I'm thrilled. Such a relief 🤗

Well done everyone for all their hard work. xx

Meadowfinch · 22/08/2024 13:07

@Johaanah Have you checked what % she got in maths? If she was very close to the grade boundary, you could ask for the paper to be remarked.

Also important for your dd. If she knows she only missed by 1 or 2 points, she will know she only needs a tiny uplift if she does have to retake.

Good luck

YellowphantGrey · 22/08/2024 13:10

Stress levels are through the roof again. Second application has gone in and accepted with grades on.

It's a waiting game now. Email has been sent out to confirm it has been received and that applications are now closed.

They will go through everyone who had offers (including external candidates) then fill the subjects starting with the highest grades for chosen subjects from internal and external candidates then it's sorted in order of looked after children, special needs and distance from school.

If no space for chosen subjects then offer of place is withdrawn. They used to prioritise existing students but now combine all applications. 400 spaces and around 800 applicants but some of those may have multiple offers.

Offer emails are sent out from 4pm. I feel it's easier to get into Uni!

Can it come back with a lower mark on a remark? And does it affect the final grade?

Yippee DS passed End lang got his 5 over the moon. Thank you @MrsHamlet for your help and tips. Still can't believe it from a possible 3 in mocks to a 5.

Whoop!!!!!!!!

Anyone know what a P means under endorsement grade?

Pass :)

I assume this is English language. It's the spoken bit.

Midnightstar76 · 22/08/2024 13:19

Just got back from enrolment at college from the girl who said no wanted to be I dependent she wanted me there in the end and it was a long process. And chuffed to bits for her as on a higher course than we thought and she passed her English Language with a 5! And English Literature with a 4! A 3 for maths but considering we were expecting 1’s and 2’s for all she has done great.

MrsHamlet · 22/08/2024 13:24

A couple of posts here are talking about remarks.

There's no longer any such thing. It's a review of marking where the marked scripts are looked at to check whether the marking was reasonable: we are not looking for more marks.

A mark one below a boundary is highly unlikely to go up by one to lift the candidate over because of the rules about reviewing.

I strongly recommend seeing scripts first and getting them checked by someone who understands the mark scheme - reviews are expensive, and marks can and do go down as well as up.

Also, if marks change but grades don't, you still have to pay.

3 x 9, 1 x 8, 4 x 7, a 6 and a 5. DD is disappointed which is crazy. She doesn't care about the 5 as she feels she was lucky to pass that subject but she doesn't feel the 7's are good enough. Does anyone else's DC feel like this? In old money she's got 4 x A* 4 x A and 2 B's. I'd have been over the moon. I feel like the numerical system somehow makes it less of an achievement for her.

I wish they woud go back to the letter grading system. Ds got 8 in English Lit and is upset he didn't get a 9. He's not seeing he got actually got an A* . Why do we have 9 grade anyway, get rid of it, too much pressure on kids.

DD was so nervous she didn't want to open her envelope until she got home, which means she didn't sign up for the sixth form while she was there. Is this a problem? It's the sixth form of her currant school and she got the grades needed.
I should email the sixth form head and explain/ask shouldn't I.

LighthouseCat · 22/08/2024 13:29

DD did well overall. Better than her mocks mostly but not by much. She thought she'd really messed up English lit, a hoped for A-level subject, so it was a very pleasant surprise to see she'd done much better than she'd thought (and will now do it for A-level). A couple of disappointing results though which took the shine off for her a bit. Drama much lower than expected and she did really well in chemistry but worse than expected in physics (it's always been the other way round!). I'm so relieved we're through it.
