Where do we find grade boundaries?

I've just googled them. It's annoyingly complicated as there are multiple exam boards and multiple options within them so it takes a while!

DelilahBucket · 22/08/2024 10:33

DS got a mixed bag but got what he wants/needs to get onto his chosen a-levels. English lit and lan both disappointing for him but he failed them both in his mocks so to get 5's was good. Lan is going to be remarked as he was one point off a 6. History was the same so is also going to be remarked. I had a conversation with him last night and said as long as he knew he'd tried his best that was the main thing. He hadn't tried his best, I knew it and he knew, although he wouldn't admit it to me but I could see he knew. I'd nagged and nagged about revision, offered all sorts of help, but he took to revising the day before each exam 🙄. Oh well, he passed everything.

One mark away from the next grade up in four subjects. He’s disappointed. Doesn’t affect A level choices but school have already said they’ll get the papers to look at. I’ll get him to speak to them when he starts sixth form.

How you do know how many marks away from the next grade? Is it the mark equivalent column? How do you find out?

Gazelda · 22/08/2024 10:35

DD did very well. Comfortably into 6th form.

Only 1 mark off higher grade in 3 subjects, so she's chatting with teachers about that.

She desperately wanted a 7 for art which she got.

Maths and combined science were amazing (8,9-8) - I think she worked extra hard on these because they're her trickiest subjects.

She's happy overall and will realise how proud she should be once we dissect the grades rather than her focussing on those that were lower than she hoped.

Progress 8 score of 0.88 which I'm trying to explain to grandparents without fully understanding myself!

They have a break down of all their scores
given at his school, not just the main result. Which can then be checked against the grade boundaries for the relevant exam board.

Echobelly · 22/08/2024 10:39

Well done to everyone's kids!

DC very happy, all 7s, 8s and 9s, comfortably into their 6th form of choice which is in Central London and should be a really fun experience. 9s are in their a level subjects as well.

Confirms my suspicion that the re-mark of their year's Eng Lang papers from March when everyone marked down by about 3 grades was kind of bullshit, and we all could have done without that worry.

Very glad they did get a 9 in music - their coursework and performance were already at that level but it was the one paper they were unhappy with.

Zanatdy · 22/08/2024 10:45

My daughter got all 9’s. Super proud of her, as she’s had a lot of health challenges in the last 4yrs.

bluefineliner · 22/08/2024 10:47

Hi all,

I need to catch up with all your posts later but just going off to enrol DD in 6th form.

She smashed it, all 9s and one grade 8 in maths!! After all that stress she did it. Phew so glad that is over and we can look forward to A levels now.

Be back later to see how they have all done.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 22/08/2024 10:53

Grade boundaries. Dd got 142 in French aqa and a grade 3. Grade boundary is 142 for a Grade 4? Should it not be a 4?

JaninaDuszejko · 22/08/2024 10:57

DD comfortably got what she needed for college but is a bit disappointed in some of her grades. Pretty similar to her mocks though, some up a grade, some down, most the same.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 22/08/2024 10:58

@SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress Yes I think that should be a 4. Ds2 got the grade boundary mark in 2 subjects and got the higher grade.

YellowphantGrey · 22/08/2024 11:01

The relief here is amazing.

He got the 6 in Maths!

8 in English Lit/Language
8 in Business
Distinction in Btech
9 Geography
7/7 in Science
6 French
9 Religious studies

All grades are higher than predicted. Just waiting now to see if he has been accepted into sixth form. Those emails are sent out at 4pm.

hels71 · 22/08/2024 11:02

DD is very happy, and has her her place at 6th form. Much relief all round!!

Tebheag · 22/08/2024 11:05

Yippee DS passed End lang got his 5 over the moon. Thank you @MrsHamlet for your help and tips. Still can't believe it from a possible 3 in mocks to a 5.

Pogonogo · 22/08/2024 11:06

My DD has her results back and when we looked at the grade boundaries, she has the correct marks exactly for 9, but only given an 8. Is there any reason this would be? It's in Art, which I know is marked differently, but it hasn't been moderated down so it should be a 9?

Which board is this?

Wehaditsogood · 22/08/2024 11:08

DS did much more consistently than in his mocks, which were 5-9. His actual results are 7-8. I am very proud.

However he wants to do sciences for A-levels (and uni), which are mostly 7s. All his social sciences are very high 8s, but he wants to drop them all. We will have to discuss it him, but ultimately it is his decision.

zingally · 22/08/2024 11:28

PinkChaires · 22/08/2024 09:56

OMG DD GOT A 9 in lit. She got a 3 in march mocks!!

Reminds me of my English AS Level. HATED the teacher (and I think the feeling was mutual). I remember her so clearly telling me that I'd get an "E if I was lucky."

WELL, I went on to get full marks in the English Language paper, An A in the novel-based Lit paper, but a D in the poetry paper, which bought me down to a B overall, but only 3 marks off an A.
I debated re-sitting to get the A, but just couldn't be arsed. But it WAS a massive FU to the teacher who told me I'd be lucky to scrape a pass!

GlomOfNit · 22/08/2024 11:30

I drove DS in for 9 and then came in with him (he said he'd like me to - was worried I'd stick out but loads of parents were in there!). After a bit of dithering he actually opened his envelope Grin and he's, overall, really pleased, as am I. He's got all 7s, 8s and 9s, and his chosen subjects for A-Levels (Biology, Chemistry and History) he got 8s and 9 in! So happy, especially for the history result as it's his top favourite subject and I think he'd secretly have been a bit sad to have missed the top mark.

Mostly happy faces in the hall, but some drama as a friend is juggling offers with one grade that fell slightly short - hope that works out ok. I drove him home to see his dad and ring GPs and now driving BACK again for a day hanging out with his geeky mates. Grin

This is such a rollercoaster of a day, I hope everyone allows the dust to settle and take stock. They will all get there.

PinkChaires · 22/08/2024 11:32

On another note, the gcse system needs a big reform imo. How is it that someone can get 9s throughout 2 years but overall get a 7 for example because of a bad day. Honestly, its like its designed to give kids mental health problems

bibliomania · 22/08/2024 11:38

She got three 9s, six 8s, one 7 and one 6. Initially a bit disappointed as she was hoping to get 9 rather than 8 in the three sciences, but now that she has processed it a bit, she accepts that it's a solid performance. She's off for a duvet day watching films with her two best friends.

BrieHugger · 22/08/2024 11:42

Anyone know what a P means under endorsement grade?

WarningOfGails · 22/08/2024 11:42

4 at 7, 3 at 8 and 2 at 9 here. I’m very pleased & proud. She got a very high 8 in Maths and a 7 in Further maths, I was worried about her taking maths for A level too so that’s good.

At the start of the year her head of year called us in for a safeguarding meeting as they were so concerned about her & at that point it felt like we might not get through the next 6 months. Really hope college in a fresh start.

and her BF got a 5 in Maths and a 6 in English, and passed everything else except Spanish so that’s brilliant too.

This is for OCR, other Boards will have theirs on-line too, you need to know the specific papers though and some look very complex!
