I've just come home from Pilates to find a full-on maths tutorial with DS and DH. Panic must have set in. He's doing higher but just squeaked in after his mocks. Apparently, he regrets his decision now!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/05/2024 19:26

@RachelGreensHair we don’t have maths tomorrow. The top 2 sets at ds’s school sat it last summer and in November and they’ve been studying additional maths since then to sit this summer.

Someone mentioned physics practicals being this week too. In our school they did all of the science practicals in January of year 10 and also sat 1 of each of the science papers last summer. They did English lit in year 10 too

ds is young in his year, he won’t be 16 until after this summer’s exams so it did feel very young to be doing them but it seems to have paid off.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 15/05/2024 19:29

There was an ITV programme about Passover and families celebraring passover that I recorded at the weekend. We are watching that, and that is the extent of the RE revision today. The rest is maths. I think it looks like he'll be OK on the maths

StarShipControl · 15/05/2024 19:38

Ds spent a couple of hrs recovering after his heavy day today, did some maths and is doing chemistry now. He says he'll go back to maths later.

Countrylife2002 · 15/05/2024 19:45

DD did an hour of maths earlier, has done about 2 hours of geography and now on RE.
it’s going to feel a lot better once we hit the weekend I think!

Countrylife2002 · 15/05/2024 19:46

Spacecowboys · 15/05/2024 16:31

Ds is stressing me out. Hasn’t done anywhere near the amount of revision I would have expected. Maths and RS tomorrow then Chemistry and Geography on Friday.

Same exams here! Two full days in school

deuxgarcons · 15/05/2024 20:15

Comp sci ok today but paper 1 is DS's better paper as he's not into coding which is most of paper 2 I think. maths tomorrow Edexcel IGCSE. Maths is his best subject and he's desperate for a 9, got 8 in mocks, so hoping for a good paper. He's doing past papers tonight.DS won't accept any help with anything on the studying front except planning a revision timetable a few weeks ago (which he then ignored!). At the time I think he was feeling overwhelmed so it helped him focus and now he's got more into the groove. Ours are on exam leave so he said he's coming back after the maths to revise for the chemistry and geography on Friday. Last time he said this he ended up in the park with mates all afternoon 🙄 Good luck everyone tomorrow and hope the papers are kind for the grade you're striving for.

Tebheag · 15/05/2024 21:50

DS starting to panic about maths he is a lot better on non calc. Just sent him to bed to switch off after he kept making silly addition mistakes on revision questions. Good look to all dds and dss tomorrow.

GlomOfNit · 15/05/2024 21:50

DS in a much better mood today, thank god, as he had a far better day. AQA History was 'perfect' and he found it 'easy' to write what he needed, plus didn't run out of time. I think they all liked it a lot. (Who was it, up-thread, who said their son loved the Weimar Rep? DS does too, and today there was a question about CULTURE in the Weimar Republic, he was chuffed!)

Exexcel Psychology was a mixed bag and he felt it was tougher than anticipated. I really hope it wasn't a case of him misreading or misunderstanding the questions, as some of his mates said it was 'easy'! (Repeat oft-given parental lecture: a) friends sometimes LIE, b) friends sometimes like to wind one another up, c) friends sometimes exaggerate for effect, d) friends sometimes say things if they're not feeling happy themselves, e) everyone is different. And will repeat many, many times again before we're done.)

Maths H paper 1 revision. He's finished that and is trying to relax, reading.

Pharos · 15/05/2024 21:57

So ds had a complete mare in lockdown - fell apart basically but it highlighted so many of his difficulties with attention, focus and processing.

He was rightly placed in the lowest set for Maths at his school but has had an amazing teacher for the last two years who has taken such care to break everything down, reinforce the basics and just make it all make sense. Whatever he gets, we’ll be so pleased as he has managed to turn things round with this support.

Can I therefore do a big thanks to all you Maths teachers out there, you do an incredible job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

StarShipControl · 15/05/2024 13:44

Ds texted today history was good so fingers crossed for that promising statement to become a reality in grade terms!
Computer science now and that's his worst subject. Pretty much failed the mock

How did the computer science go? DD came back pretty flat today after it 😬

Is anyone else's DC just awful at letting you know how exam went? Technically they can't use phones at school but she's always been able to send a sneaky text when she wants me to buy her something when I'm at work! She then takes a 40 min bus home and still won't text. Am doing everything I can to be hands off and chill as that's how she wants it and worked well for her mocks, but goes against all my natural instincts lol! Looking forward to half term as it's her 16th so no talking about exams at all.

My son was quick to let me know when he got his 8 in the mocks had to practically drag the other results out of him.
Just went to check and he is already fast asleep so much for not being tired.
Thank you for the kind words I was just very hormonal and tired yesterday.

StarShipControl · 15/05/2024 22:29

@Myotis he said it was ok as around 60% of it was familiar. He had a go at most of it. It's his worst paper and he's not looking forward to paper 2.

bluefineliner · 16/05/2024 05:48

Hi all, I've been following the last few days as I have a DD16 doing GCSEs too. Things have been up and down after each exam so far. DD is a high achiever, but puts so much pressure on herself that nothing DH or I say makes any difference if she thinks she messed up on something. She scours tik tok after exams and usually finds something she's not done/ could have done better that she thinks indicates she'll get much lower grades than her mocks.

I am already knackered from the emotional rollercoaster and we aren't even half way through!! My first DD was nothing like this. I think the main issue is she did exceptionally well in her mocks and thinks anything less for actual results will be a failure, and that others will judge her! No amount of reassurance or logic from me helps just now.

Oh well, maths today, which has always been her favourite subject, however last night she announced she 'can't even do basic maths now' 🙄.

Good luck to all for today's exam/s.

Countrylife2002 · 16/05/2024 07:02

@bluefineliner my dd can be like this and I feel for you! She won’t be happy without a full set of 9s - excepting maths , where she’s hoping for a 7 (if she’s lucky). She has a maths tutor and as result seems less stressy about maths now.

I’m actually so mad with her maths teacher as she is a 6 going on 7 and he teaches to the 8/9 level so she has no clue what is happening in his lessons which have been a complete waste of time all year as a result (and won’t move her ). He’s also held ‘intervention” classes for 8-9 grades all year and nothing at all for dd despite her falling below her predicted 7-9 in every mock. I’ve complained but nothing has changed. Makes me mad. Just a glory teacher.

i think she has realised she has had bad teaching so what she can do. She did a bit of maths yesterday but focused on the subjects that are more important to her.

It was mine! We did look askance at him waxing lyrical about pre war Germany when he said 'Those Nazis had some good ideas about architecture and transport!'

I'm going to probably have this with DS2. He's sailing through everything but gets very upset at results DS1 would be delighted with. Hopefully if maths is her favourite subject it will just come to her. I did a maths course as an adult and he said once the neurons are built on maths they are just ' there'. I don't know how true that is but it made me feel better!

DramaLlamaBangBang · 16/05/2024 07:16

Good luck everyone! I am invigilating the maths gcse at my work, but I'm not allowed to look at the paper! It wouldn't make any sense to me anyway! I thought it would distract me but I'll probably be even more stressed! I have to concentrate though as I'm doing the people with supervised rest breaks

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 16/05/2024 07:49

Good luck for today folks Flowers

RunningAndSinging · 16/05/2024 08:09

Good luck everyone - Maths for most I guess and RS for some (including DD). Two A level subjects here. Hope the papers are ok for everyone today.

StarShipControl · 16/05/2024 08:12

Good luck everyone. I've been repeating to ds "remember to underline the instructions!" as he's prone to silly errors.

MonkeyTennis34 · 16/05/2024 08:57

Good luck today all for Maths!

It's a biggie.....🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I don't recall being this anxious about my own blimmin exams (sat back in '92 in a teeny tiny army school in a sunny location).

Yes, it’s funny isn’t it! And I’m not sure my parents even knew I was sitting exams - there was no interest in it at all from them.. I think as a generation we are all much much more engaged in our kids’ education than our parents - I wonder why… is it a natural consequence of league tables and ‘transparency’, and performance and SATs (at primary), which fosters a high level of concern / engagement in parents… or is it that things are much more competitive now (eg university entry requirements have gone up massively since I applied (about a hundred years ago).. so you could do almost anything at uni, and go to almost any uni you wanted with 2xB and 1xC at A-level… and now a huge number of degree courses at RG have entry requirements around 3xA (or higher in many cases)….

Wehaditsogood · 16/05/2024 09:19

I don't know how I will cope with A-levels?! 😌
