In the email Emanuel said that they had a huge number of applicants this year and have taken less than half forward for interview. Very frustrating for those still waiting. Hope you all hear soon

tennissquare · 12/01/2024 16:23

@lolo99 , re your Hampton post, if your ds had the normal interview I'm sure he has a good chance of an offer. Only a few get academic scholarship interviews and the maths extension sessions is being held after the offers are out so it isn't part of the selection process. Hampton lose lots and lots of bright applicants to Tiffin and Wilsons's each year and it's more likely that the maths session is to lure possible applicants who are good at maths away from tiffin etc before the grammar results are out.
The secondary schools are gearing up to attract the applicants they really want knowing the applicants will have several offers and scholarships from other schools etc.

Definitely felt that there were more people applying for (and liking!) Emanuel than almost any other school in South West London, based on this thread! ;)
Will be watching the rankings over the next few years, as expecting to see it shoot up....

I remember that being said when DD applied 6 years ago!

Emmanuel has been in recent years one of the most popular (maybe the most popular) school, with usually over 1,000 applicants - a mix of their co-Ed nature, accessible location to many, and the fact that it is aspirational for some less academic DC, fallback for others (more academic) and target for many. It hits a bit of a sweet spot. Talking with friends with older DCs they recall the period when it was an easy pass... definitely not any more.

PS the reference to particularly high number of applications was also there last year! One wonders whether a useful way to "climb down" from their previously stated aim to interview more than most other schools (which they may still do in absolute terms)

Latymer upper is the same, crazily popular with 1400 nearly sitting this year.

@Hatty999 agree. KGS also really popular although logistics work less well. I have always thought that there is definitely scope for more co-eds.

itsanewera · 12/01/2024 16:43

But Emanuel still have to over offer by a lot. Just looked at 2 local prep schools. 26 offers in total and 8 acceptances. They are still seen a 'back up' by some ( perhaps unrealistically).

PreplexJ · 12/01/2024 16:43

"Will be watching the rankings over the next few years, as expecting to see it shoot up...."

Increase number of applicants not necessarily translate to higher league table ranking in the future. The last ranking position that admitted to the school relative the total number of applicants/intake is a more reliable measure.

For example last one is rank 400-500 out of 1000 for 100 intake, compared last rank of 100 out of 600 for 50 intake...

ALongProcess · 12/01/2024 16:59

@PreplexJ how on earth would you ever know that, though? Genuine question

We won't know the exact, but one can infer it from other information, for example some school are transparent on multiple of over offering vs intake number. The over offer number or multipler can also infer from some published information from prep schools too.

Jumpingjackjack · 12/01/2024 17:02

@itsanewera I agree. Our primary school received the most offers from Emanuel 2 years ago, but in the end, only 1/3 of those offered accepted it. The school is still seen as a back up for a lot of people. I agree with @QuiteAJourney ’s observation that it hits a sweet spot in terms of its appeal as aspirational/target/back up school almost in equal measure, making it a desirable choice for many. It has a much wider intake compared to a lot of the local co-eds, which adds to the appeal.

It should do though. If more people apply, the school can be more picky.... so pick the better candidates.... and as the school starts to move up, better candidates apply, and it turns into a virtuous circle.
This is exactly what is happening at Harrodian at the moment (though starting from a much lower base).

Still no response for us from Emanuel, though now positive that's because it's a no. Not very impressed, as for us it was one of the first exams we sat!

I agree on a school being more selective (if they can) , the better should be it on the future ranking table. Intake selection competitiveness is the main explanation factor for league table ranking but not the input from the school itself.

My point is the increased number of applicants not necessarily translate to an increased level of school selection. The intake selection competitiveness need to look at multiple factors together.

There are many reason for more people applying, for example baby boom at 2010-2012, or kids apply for more and more schools compared to before. This is not specific to any specific schools.

SilverLake · 12/01/2024 17:16

Anyone else still waiting on Emanuel or have you all heard by now?

itsanewera · 12/01/2024 17:17

And also they are not necessarily selecting the candidates who score highest in the exam so they may not climb the league tables ( which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

Jumpingjackjack · 12/01/2024 17:18

Not necessarily. The more academic boys at our school all received offers but all turned it down for KC Wimbledon/LU/DC etc, so it’s not the case that Emanuel can pick the more able student just because they apply. The student has to also pick the school!

@SilverLake ☺️beginning to wonder if they’ve had an IT malfunction?!😂but perhaps I’m just clutching at straws!

Mamahappylove · 12/01/2024 17:45

Also still waiting. There was one child with a printed copy of his interview invite at school pick up today 😭

Summerma · 12/01/2024 17:47

@Mamahappylove YIKES! That is intense… I only told DS when we got home…

farfallarocks · 12/01/2024 17:50

me too. Bit off announcing it at the school gate isn’t it? I’ve told dd to stay discrete and not discuss it TBH

Summerma · 12/01/2024 17:51

@farfallarocks yes we’ve done the same for all schools. I said if someone asks him directly he can say discreetly but he cannot announce etc.

So crash! One thinks that the parents should know better but unfortunately this process tends to show people's true colours ..
