IndieAnna · 08/02/2024 21:35

Good luck everyone! Hope it all works out 🤞 With such dedicated parents your DCs will be fine whatever school they end up at.

I feel this thread will get close to the limit early tomorrow….

FlyingPandas · 08/02/2024 21:40

Good luck to all, here’s to lots of offers coming through tomorrow!

Hatty999 · 08/02/2024 21:40

I agree, can someone start a new one and link it if they see we are too close.

We should give it the same title with (cont) after so we all know where to find each other.

I may not be online first thing but think you are right, it will have exploded from early morning, I'm sure!

travelturtle · 09/02/2024 07:46

Morning everyone. Hope you got more sleep than I did. If things go same way as last year guess we are expecting Hampton to send results first 🤞 good luck all. May have already refreshed emails a lot…..🤣

Hatty999 · 09/02/2024 08:47

Please can someone start a link thread asap - I can’t as in a meeting haha

Hi Everyone
This has been a really interesting thread - thanks all for your posts. We are choosing between Ibstock and Emanuel for DS. For any of the parents on here that chose one or the other - any words of wisdom please? Are you/your children happy?

Thanks

Emanuel, Year 7 onwards separate sciences subjects by specialists teachers, Ibstock not until year 9 so just combined science. The GCSEs, choice and selection are different Ibstock are in block timetable and Emanuel if by choice.
Do go to Open days for both and ask about clubs, sports etc.

Albertine130 · 22/02/2025 17:14

Thanks @HawaiiWake. I hadn’t realised that Ibstock teach combined science until Y9. Does this make a big difference? Is it more beneficial to have them split earlier?

Do you have a DC at either school?

i have been to both open days and will go to offer holder but there’s only so much you can find out. Don’t know how people holding 5 or 6 offers make their decisions!

Know families in both schools from lower sixth form to year 7 spread. Very different. Check their websites for GCSEs data and information and curriculum. Combined science is less science topics and it can be taught by a physics teacher. Science specialist teachers in different science would be physics teacher for physics and the chemistry teacher would have more time for experiments. Which would DC and you prefer? GCSEs, also different subjects and selection method. Good luck with selecting, great offers.

travelturtle · 22/02/2025 18:02

@Albertine130 Both my DS had offers from Ibstock & Emanuel (one also had LU and the other Hampton). We chose Emanuel for both and have been really happy with it. They both have a good group of friends so are happy, and the subjects are well taught and plenty of encouragement for them to do extra curricular things too. We liked Ibstock too, but Emanuel seemed stronger on science whereas Ibstock seemed to have more emphasis on languages & arts eg I think at Ibstock they needed to do two languages at GCSE (not sure if that’s still the case so do check). Emanuel good all round really - no complaints. our children are very happy there. Will be our first choice for DD as well for Y7, though will also apply to Ibstock - so we did like it. Consider the journeys too if that makes a difference depending on where you live.

Thank you for the tips. From what I can see the options for GCSE at both are fairly similar. I thought IPS used to insist on 2 languages but now it seems only one is required. Emanuel certainly seems to perform better academically than IPS… As for the sciences, my DC will certainly enjoy experiments - perhaps it could be argued that a specialist teacher is more passionate about their subject than one that can teach all three but really only loves one!

@travelturtle thank you so much for your feedback - it is very reassuring and and really interesting you chose it over LU and Hampton. I also looked at those schools but, rightly or wrongly feel Emanuel is more rounded and less pushy on the academics. Logistically it is easier for us to get to and our DS is more science orientated than the arts. I hadn’t considered that IPS leaned more to that side.

Where do most of your DC’s friends live? We are 10 mins from Shep Bush station which goes through to Clap Junc. I get the impression that IPS pupils are more local/south of the river.

On one of the millions of threads I’ve trawled through, I read that IPS kids have to stay outside at lunch unless in a club.

What is Emanuel’s policy - are they allowed inside?

travelturtle · 22/02/2025 23:21

@Albertine130 not heard that about IPS so do check. At break times at Emanuel the kids can do clubs, play outside or go to the library or do other things. Think it’s pretty relaxed though they have allocated year group areas outside - but my two only ever seem to play football at break times!

About 50% of their friends live around Clapham, and the rest are Wimbledon/Putney/Richmond/Shepherds Bush/Kensington. It’s a bit of a spread but there are so many kids coming into CJ at 8-8:15 and walking to school there’s always someone to walk with. Does mean a lot of birthday parties/meet ups happen around CJ but that’s expected I think.

Good luck with your decision. We found the offer holder days really helped.

Do many of the dc at Emanuel play sports during the break time? Do your sons find they are always able to play (thinking space wise or inclusiveness). At my ds current school sometimes dc in other classes or years will say no they can't play (this is after school in the park, so nothing really can be done about this!).

The other MN posted that sport played in year group alloacated areas, so Year 7 not going up a Year 10 in football. Our friends’ kids mentioned table tennis outside for boys and girls and sport at lunch for house competition. Seems a lot going on plus chess club etc.
