Yawn…… my child’s a genius! 🙄

12345change · 03/02/2024 13:27

Here is the problem the system… it’s never fair

MeimeiApril · 03/02/2024 13:30

The conversation seems to have shifted focus. No one has asserted the superiority of one child over another. Scientifically, it's proven that children have varying learning abilities, and having mental disabilities doesn't diminish a child's worth. However, a child entering a prestigious school without extensive preparation and no tutoring may find the teaching pace slower, posing challenges for the child, the school, and the parents. I meant GCSE maths a grade 9 with 95% overall.

MeimeiApril · 03/02/2024 13:34

It seems you don't have one, and I believe if you were dealing with the situation, you might never wish for one. No one has made such a claim about a genius. In this country, the focus appears to be on celebrating sports and pop music. However, those with exceptionally bright children might feel compelled to keep quiet about it, because many people seem to exhibit a similar attitude as the one you demonstrated, so people are scared!

PreplexJ · 03/02/2024 13:39

I do know a few kids had achieved GCSE level maths at the age of year 6/7 (not sure grade 9 as they never took the test). And I also notice a lot of news coverage on kids at primary school age achieve high grade in GCSE too. This is great and should be celebrated but just want to say they also work very hard to achieve that.

Trickleg · 03/02/2024 13:41

@MeimeiApril it doesn’t really get more competitive than St Paul’s Girls in terms of entry (other than perhaps some of the superselectivr grammars?). I’m sure, should your undoubtedly very able child get a place, she’ll be properly challenged. I must say that “will my child be bored at the one of the most selective private girls schools at the UK” is a new angle on the 11 plus angst!!

MeimeiApril · 03/02/2024 13:47

My DD isn’t as academically advanced as the other child, but I am sure she’ll be content with whichever school she gets into.

Bewler · 03/02/2024 13:48

Many of us this thread have normal children and came here for some support and holding through the horrendously competitive and stressful process that is the 11+. I think “my child’s so bright I don’t know which school can adequately challenge them” perhaps belongs on a thread of its own. Going to drop off this for a bit as yea it’s definitely shifted focus and yes you’re right, not something I can relate to!

MeimeiApril · 03/02/2024 13:52

I won't debate the amount of time each child invests in their studies, as it could open another can of worms. Only their parents know how much the child spend on academic work at home. I appreciate many of the feedback given in this discussion, including yours.

MeimeiApril · 03/02/2024 13:58

I apologize if I have unintentionally upset someone. My daughter is not an extreme case, but my other child is. I didn't bring up this discussion until the topic of tutoring came up because I firmly believe not all children require tutoring. Honestly, with my other child being a boy, there is no competition at all for SPG

saywh4tnow · 03/02/2024 14:17

The thing is at this point, all these points you are bringing up are all so hypothetical. The schools are looking their cohort's exam results, interviews, school reports and teacher statements now, making their selection list. There's nothing anything anyone can do about it until you hear directly from the school so comparing your child to previous children's CAT scores etc is kind of by the by?

And then once the offers are out, you need to factor in the fact that schools are all over offering, and using waiting lists because lots of children apply to multiple schools and those families will all have their own preferences based on their own personal circumstances.

There are so many different, subjective factors that come into play here, it just doesn't matter whether you think other people's children are over tutored or not tutored. It's just a selection process to get them all to the next stage.

CocoC · 03/02/2024 14:36

I think everyone intent on going into private school tutors. Those groups may or may not tutor more, but what is certain is they have a harder work ethic - those kids are very disciplined, and the parents are stricter.
Also - they focus on the academics and the music, much more than the sporting side (it is marked that the higher sports teams will have a lower ratio of SE Asian children - whereas the top music scholars are almost all SE Asian).

MeimeiApril · 03/02/2024 14:43

Thank you for the input. I’m not really bothered by how other children prepared for their exams. We are never going to change the way others do. I didn’t bring up the tutoring matter at all for any of my questions and just replied to another thread regarding tutoring. Lol. I’m curious to gather some others’ experiences regarding the exam process and other factors related to the outcomes. I understand that nothing is certain until the results are out; then, I can see if all the factors discussed in the forum make any sense. Perhaps it will be valuable for other parents like me in the future.

I think I have got answers for my questions, so just sit and wait! Another week to go. Good luck to everyone who is waiting for the results. Hope everyone gets the school the child deserves.

I find it very upsetting that some posters here equate Asian with overtutored. It is also extremely hypocritical. Show me the English upper middle class family at SPGS and G&L that isn't "overtutoring" their child. Some posters basically imply that Asian kids get in because they are "overtutored", not because they are smart. As if the white candidates got in on their sheer brilliance without hard work and "overtutoring".

It's not just directed at Asian over tutoring. Anyone getting in anywhere is always met with 'you must have done so much.'

As a dyslexic adult with a dyslexic child, I would rather you didn’t refer to children or people with learning difficulties as having mental disabilities… most prefer neurodivergent/ neurodivergence

Not everyone over tutors to get in these schools. Sure, some over tutor, but some get in without doing crazy prep. But I get what you are saying, it is not nice to stereotype who is doing the over tutoring.

Good luck, whatever happens our DCs have worked extremely hard, I know I am super proud, I could not have done it aged 10/11.

travelturtle · 05/02/2024 08:06

No results here yet either - all happening this week. Looking forward to knowing the outcomes, and glad we then have half term to figure out what to do (🤞for a good option for everyone).

Bewler · 05/02/2024 09:00

Totally @IndieAnna! They have shown such resilience to get through this process. It has felt brutal at times. Good luck everyone!
