does anyone's children's secondary school not go back until the 8th January! seems a crazy long xmas holiday when most are back to school/work next week!
son in year 11 so could do with not missing an extra week!

Yup, 8th here too. State.

Primary child goes back on 4th

AuntMarch · 29/12/2023 08:33

9th here, but we didn't break up til 20th.
He's not losing a week, there are a set number of days children are in school it just varies when those days are.

rochethenut · 29/12/2023 08:33

we broke up on 13th

back on 8th

WarningOfGails · 29/12/2023 08:34

Presumably he broke up later? Mine broke up on 15th Dec, go back on 2nd Jan. feels brutally soon! Would rather they had broken up 20th or similar and go back a bit later.

Almondmum · 29/12/2023 08:34

Mine are the 8th too but they broke up on 21st

MirandaWest · 29/12/2023 08:35

My DD broke up on 22nd and is back on the 8th. So will have been off for two weeks.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 29/12/2023 08:36

We finished 15th which was too early and has been a long run into Christmas. And now back on 2nd which is way too early. Much would have preferred breaking up & going back later.

FawnFrenchieMum · 29/12/2023 08:36

Mine broke up lunch time on the 22nd and are back on the 9th. I’d rather that then rushing back on the 2nd.

Noideawhatiam · 29/12/2023 08:40

Most schools here finished 20th and return 3rd, so not even a full 2 weeks, which feels far too short.

AnneValentine · 29/12/2023 08:41

The state schools going back on 8th broke up later.

EffortlessDelegation · 29/12/2023 08:42

When mine were school age we always preferred it if they broke up early and went back early as the run up to Christmas at home is lovely whereas by now we were always climbing the walls and needing to get back to routine (I still am, I don't go back to work till Tues and it can't come soon enough). However youngest is at college now and back on Weds and I do think break up late / go back late would have worked better from GCSE years onwards as its easier to do the necessary work/revision in the quiet time after Christmas.

SutWytTi · 29/12/2023 08:43

They're not 'missing an extra week'. They do the same number of weeks every year here.

Some terms are longer than others. That's just how the calendar falls.

Minikievs · 29/12/2023 08:49

8th here but didn't break up til 22nd. State. Primary is the same.
So they got NO time before Xmas to do lovely xmassy things.
But they get a miserable week in January, when I'm back at work on 2nd.
It's rubbish

That is short

Ended on 20th and was just checking anyway and back on 9th

Later than I expected

Theunamedcat · 29/12/2023 08:56

Ended 22nd back on the 8th here primary is same but back on the 9th it was a brutal half term on the run up to Christmas they need the rest

Coincidentally · 29/12/2023 08:58

Envy you! I teach in a indie and we are back on 2nd and kids 3rd 😔

Smartiepants79 · 29/12/2023 08:59

The number of weeks holiday/in school is fixed. They’ve not gained an extra week it’s just been distributed differently this time.
We broke up on the 22nd, back on the 8th. 2 weeks as usual.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 29/12/2023 09:02

Broke up 22/12 and back on 9/1 due to teacher training day. It was a long hard slog to the 22nd and I would have preferred to have broken up earlier.

fatandhappy47 · 29/12/2023 09:04

8th here but they didn't break up till 21st so only a 2 week break

AvengedQuince · 29/12/2023 09:05

Ours is the same, it's still the usual two weeks. It's a shame they can't do midweek to midweek like last day on the 20th then back on the 4th.

Agree with this. We didn't have time to do any of the usual Xmas stuff this year. Would much rather they broke up a week earlier and went back on the 2nd

HeyDiggity · 29/12/2023 09:07

All children in state schools have the same number of days teaching. 190. He won’t miss out on any.

Bigminnie1 · 29/12/2023 09:08

Mine is back on 8th but didn't break up until 22nd.

twistyizzy · 29/12/2023 09:09

DD broke up 15th and not back until 10th but I'm back to work on 2nd. TBF she needed the lengthy break after a long and intense term.
