does anyone's children's secondary school not go back until the 8th January! seems a crazy long xmas holiday when most are back to school/work next week!
son in year 11 so could do with not missing an extra week!

Another one here with a yr 11 who needs this Christmas break. Presumably your son has only got 2 weeks like everyone else, they're just falling on different dates? Let him make the most of it. After this it's stress and pressure all the way until June.

Exactly this. My year 11 is having a complete revision break. He needs the rest just as much as he needs revision. It will be full on from Jan-June so he will need this break

rochethenut · 29/12/2023 17:50

australia gets approx 12 weeks a year
UK gets approached 13 weeks a year

hby9628 · 29/12/2023 17:50

Mine but they didn't finish until 22nd. It was too late really. They are knackered.

AvengedQuince · 29/12/2023 17:58

rochethenut · 29/12/2023 17:49

half hour a day equates to a morning school a week, which will add up rather quickly over the year

True, but half an hour did not make my child noticeably any more tired.

Hobbitlover · 29/12/2023 18:00

22nd till 8th here

WantToChangeUsername · 29/12/2023 18:00

Broke up on the 22nd (felt late) back on the 9th.

AnneElliott · 29/12/2023 18:08

Mine too. State grammar. But they broke up on the 20th.

ItsNotaCabbage · 29/12/2023 20:13

@Needmorelego loads of fun stuff, visit nearby Xmas market. Visit national trust places that are beautifully decorated for Xmas. Go to garden centres to see the displays. Make Xmas biscuits to give to friends and neighbours. I love it when the kids break up a week before so I can take time off work and do that stuff with them. We aren’t really into new year so wouldn’t mind going back early.

Occasional2023 · 29/12/2023 20:19

Around here they didn't break up until 21st or 22nd so only 2 weeks off. It's no longer than usual, just later. I expect that next year with the leap year they will probably break up around 19th or 20th

When did you child actually break up? Is it a private school? They do tend to have longer holidays.

SilkFloss · 29/12/2023 20:22

He's not "missing a week." The school year is 190 days, regardless of how the terms are arranged.

squeekyturkey · 29/12/2023 20:22

8th for mine. I thought I'd rather break up earlier than 22nd dec but now I'm happy as I work tto and follow my dc term dates so having all of next week off is great!

evtheria · 29/12/2023 20:23

Mine is state primary but also 8th, though they only finished on the 22nd.

troppibambini6 · 29/12/2023 20:27

My primary are going back on the 3rd and my secondary on the 8th.
They both finished on the 22nd it's far too short a holiday for the primary kids. I would love them to be off til the 8th with the older ones.
The 8th is fine it's been a long term and they need a break.

notacooldad · 29/12/2023 20:28

Some of the schools I work with , here in Penrith are going back next Wednesday and some on Thursday. Not sue about all of them though I'm only working with pupils from three schools at the moment.

i never said or even thought it did!

Princesspollyyy · 29/12/2023 20:38

Broke up on 21st, back on 8th

IggyAce · 29/12/2023 20:41

Broke up 22nd and back 8th January.

Bouncyball23 · 29/12/2023 20:52

2 weeks off over Xmas is normal so how he is losing aweek am not sure.

Needmorelego · 29/12/2023 20:59

@ItsNotaCabbage interesting - most of the Christmas markets and special events I know of took place on the weekends all through November and December. There was very little on during weekdays. Also most places with fancy displays still have them up now as it's technically still Christmas until the 6th.
This year there was a whole weekend before actual Christmas day to make biscuits.
If you found stuff to do then that's good. Where I live that had schools who finished earlier - all I saw was bored, moany kids being dragged around the supermarkets by stressed looking grandmas (who were stuck doing the childcare).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/12/2023 21:07

Mine broke up on 22nd and go back on 8th. High school and primary the same.

Lalux · 29/12/2023 21:12

DS is in Y11 and finished on 22 and back on 8th Jan. He was really tired after mocks so said he wasn't doing any revision until after new year so then has a few days to get back into it before going back to school which probably suits him a bit more. This term has felt like the longest term ever with 2 very long half terms. Half-term starts on 12 February so they are only back for a month before the next break which seems crazy.

Sommerled · 29/12/2023 21:15

Back on the 4th here which is unusually early. 2nd would kill me but it's a public holiday here in Scotland thankfully.

It's not clear if he's had more than two weeks, or two weeks finishing late and going back late.

But if it's the former, it being added on in July won't help year 11s whose exams are done by then.

The 190 days quoted doesn't actually extend to year 11s, who finish early.
