does anyone's children's secondary school not go back until the 8th January! seems a crazy long xmas holiday when most are back to school/work next week!
son in year 11 so could do with not missing an extra week!

@Needmorelego I am a contrary madam and am completely over Xmas by the 27th so don’t want to visit all the places now! My children have begged me to leave the tree up until new year as I want to take everything down now.

I don’t think the kids really mind the later return. It’s me who feels grumpy about it, I feel cheated out of my Xmas build up. It’s the bit I like the most!

Flyhigher · 29/12/2023 21:27

Must be to help teachers prepare and do marking.

NoHillsHere · 29/12/2023 16:17

@FreshWinterMorning are you seriously suggesting that pupils and staff do eleven straight weeks with no break from Jan 8th to March 22nd?

WOW!😂A whole eleven weeks of work? Monday to Friday, 9am til 3.30pm. Gosh how would they cope?!!! 😆

Thanks for the belly laugh @NoHillsHere Grin

Occasional2023 · 29/12/2023 21:32

As the OP hasn't returned, I would hazard a guess that her child attends an institution not regulated by the 190 days rule and therefore broke up earlier than the majority on here.

FreshWinterMorning · 29/12/2023 21:33

rochethenut · 29/12/2023 17:31

much shorter hours

LOL. No they're not. It's a normal school day! 😆

AvengedQuince · 29/12/2023 16:49

In Australia they have four terms of 10 weeks, no half terms.

Yep exactly! I am cringing for that poster @NoHillsHere 😬 For saying eleven weeks straight without a break, (Monday-Friday 9.00am to 3.30pm) would be unthinkable!!! 😆

Almondmum · 29/12/2023 08:34

Mine are the 8th too but they broke up on 21st

This.

NoHillsHere · 29/12/2023 21:55

And that, dear @FreshWinterMorning is why there is a recruitment crisis in UK schools, and one third of all ECTs quit within the first five years. I would be absolutely delighted to do eleven weeks straight of 9.00 to 3.30, taking no marking or preparation home, doing no parents' evenings or booster classes, writing no reports, yada, yada etc.

But, you, know, I wasn't even especially thinking of myself when I wrote that, because teachers actually care about their pupils. If you read upthread, you will see plenty of PP stating that their children were wiped out after an 8.5 week half term and desperately in need of the Christmas break.

Again, for those at the back. Pupils at state schools in the UK are taught for 190 days per year. The holiday pattern varies slightly year on year. Teachers do an extra 5 INSET days which were taken out of their holiday entitlement when the Thatcher government introduced them in the 1980s. Even if INSET days had never been invented, your children would not be at school on that day.

So, @FreshWinterMorning , when will you be signing up to become a qualified teacher? It being such a doddle, and all?

rochethenut · 30/12/2023 07:07

wouldn’t we all! in any full time job

much shorter hours

How much shorter? The day was the same timing for us, not finished by 3 either, more 3.25

i don’t think you read the exchange properly

rochethenut · 30/12/2023 12:43

bugger all to do with comparing my job to a child’s school hours 😂

It was an exchange with a teacher

LonelynSad · 30/12/2023 12:55

You were trying to make out that teachers' working hours are the same as a child's time in school. As it should be fairly basic and widespread knowledge that teachers put in many, many more hours to the job than that, one can only assume that you were being deliberately goady.

no i wasn’t!

A teacher said that she wished her hours were just 9-3

and i said “don’t we all”

in any event… my children, at private, are 8.15 to 4.45

and my son (second are private 8.15-6.30!)

both of which are longer than my full time hours! 😂

rochethenut · 30/12/2023 17:16

she said she’d be “delighted to do 9-3”

i said “don’t we all”

Do you disagree?

deliberately goady?

perhaps if you go around always seeing shadows, but that sounds a crap way to live!

rochethenut · 30/12/2023 17:18

i am in awe of teachers because it is the antithesis of what I would want to do!
