Ds has put in for a review of marking on two papers (two diff subjects). School suggested which papers.

Has anyone had a review back yet please? I'm just wondering how long it takes?

Within 20 working days. In reality, much faster than that.

Cubic · 31/08/2023 15:36

Thank you. Fingers crossed for sooner.

Did your papers come back? I put 2 papers in yesterday and just wondering how long it is actually taking. Hope that you got the result that you wanted, it’s so expensive!

GrammarTeacher · 14/09/2023 19:35

AQA are taking a very long time this year. All I've had so far have been on the 20 days. I'm an English teacher and they've been a nightmare this year

Thank you, that’s really helpful and gives me an idea. My DS had an unusual Eng Lit result 71 in one paper and 38 in the other. He was about 9 marks off an 8 so not worth looking at a review but a bit odd. Predicted an 8.

peacock2 · 14/09/2023 21:40

It's probably because there has been a deluge. The state of English marking across the exam boards this year defies belief.

It may well be worth a remark. The 'distance' from the boundary is irrelevant if, for example, the answer was not marked because it wasn't found by the computer scanner or the student had written it in a slightly different section of the answer book. So many schools are just focusing on the distance from the boundary. That may work for some subjects but not in all cases where marking is incorrect for English this year. The school need to look at the script to check that everything a. Has been marked and then b. Been marked correctly. Best to get the script first (or if it's Edexcel look at the online script which is already there for teachers to see in school). I have found lots of answers have simply been missed this year and that serious omission by the exam board has sometimes explained why one paper has a high mark in line with expectations and another is out of kilter.

Aethelfleda · 14/09/2023 21:49

we’re waiting for English remark too. it is draaaaagging…

JaffavsCookie · 14/09/2023 21:58

At the risk of sounding like a pedant, you aren’t getting a remark, you are getting a review of marking. There is a difference, albeit it maybe subtle.
A remark would be marking it again from scratch, and using the second examiners perspective, the review of marks ( which is what you can currently pay for) approaches it in a different way ( under the express instructions of OFQUAL) is the mark the original marker gave reasonable?. You or I may have given it more or less, but looking at the mark scheme was the original mark a fair offering.
Anyway I think most subjects are pretty busy.

Aethelfleda · 14/09/2023 22:04

thanks Jaffa, review of marking then .
it’s still taking an age and given that this one grade cost my DC their sixth form offer, the longer it takes the less likely there will be any spare spaces even if the grade goes up. grumble

MrsHamlet · 14/09/2023 22:11

You should have been told it could take up to twenty days from when the request is received by the board.

If it went in on results day, you should have had it by now, since today is day 22.

Sadtimes1 · 14/09/2023 22:21

Thank you. That is interesting, we have the scripts but I think it would have to be looked at by a teacher as we couldn’t really understand why the mark was so low on that paper. The school are not overly interested but it is unusual for my DS to receive a mark that low. It was AQA English Lit.

Sadtimes1 · 14/09/2023 22:25

@Aethelfleda I hope that you get the review back soon and that the mark goes up.
I spent a small fortune when my eldest DS was 1 mark off the grade he needed for his dream top prestigious uni. We had all papers reviewed, it was so stressful and unfortunately the mark stayed the same and the uni refused to give him a place.

Did he answer all the questions? One of mine swore blind that he had. We got the paper back. He had not.

hockeygrass · 14/09/2023 22:59

I've seen the number of applications made by the exams officer of a local college for either scripts or marking reviews and it's staggering. The exam boards must been overwhelmed with requests.

Aethelfleda · 14/09/2023 23:16

yeah, Inchecked re the times and it’s 20 WORKING days (mon-fri, not bank holidays). so more like a full calendar month.
we should hear in the next week though (ulp)

Sadtimes1 · 14/09/2023 23:19

Yes, answered all the questions. He wants to ask his English teacher but won’t, he has social anxiety.

Wolvesart · 14/09/2023 23:23

It took a month on the one GCSE we asked for remark on last year

Sadtimes1 · 14/09/2023 23:27

Thank you, that’s good to know. I haven’t received an email to say the exam board have got it yet so will prob be looking at the end of October.

Sadtimes1 · 14/09/2023 23:28

Good luck, hope you hear good news soon.

GrammarTeacher · 15/09/2023 05:45

I've had 3 out papers go up out of 8 back so far: 7 marks, 10 marks and 22 marks (none of these were due to a missed question).

Cubic · 15/09/2023 16:34

Sorry for the late reply. No he hasn't heard anything yet. We have had confirmation that they've recieved the papers, I think it said domething along the lines if low priority.

Fingers crossed for everyone.

@Cubic Hope that you hear soon and that it’s good news!

Sadtimes1 · 15/09/2023 16:45

@GrammarTeacher Wow 😮, our school don’t advise a review unless it’s 1-2 marks off the next grade. My DS English lit is around 9 marks off but I think I am may take another look at it as something doesn’t seem right.

MrsHamlet · 15/09/2023 16:58

@Sadtimes1 that's terrible advice from the centre and suggests that they've not understood the difference between a remark and a review.
Anyone considering a review should see the scripts first so they can make an informed decision.
