That all sounds brilliant @Rowgtfc72 . How exciting!

Hellocatshome · 19/07/2023 18:32

@Rowgtfc72 that sounds great. DS has had an email that his apprenticeship doesn't start until the end of September and he is already getting under my feet.

That’s great news, @Rowgtfc72
She sounds very up together and organised to know exactly what she wants to do already - and make it happen.

Changes17 · 19/07/2023 20:42

Ah, lovely to have a real break though, @Hellocatshome I’m sure he’ll be glad of it once he’s started.

Ds applied for a few jobs and heard nothing back yet. I thought they'd be loads of jobs for 16 year olds around in the holidays.
What jobs do your dc have? 🤔

Same. We've a really big student population, and I think DD is probably competing for customer service jobs against people a few years older and with more experience.

We're not originally from the area we live in now, so I don't have the kind of connections where you can sort them out with a couple of days pot washing/fruit picking in a mate's business for cash in hand like I used to do.

Rowgtfc72 · 20/07/2023 09:10

We live at a seaside resort. You'd think there would be lots of jobs for 16 Yr olds. Everyone has kept their staff from last year or just not bothered replying to dd. Shes put all her cvs in personally and four jobs have offered to ring the next day but haven't. One said she couldn't have a job because she starts her apprenticeship in September.
Strangely enough macdonalds got back after four months to offer an interview. Nothing to do with the knife attack in town and all the young staff leaving in fear though.

NCTDN · 20/07/2023 09:11

I think jobs for 16yo are very rare these days.

PhotoDad · 20/07/2023 09:20

DS doesn't turn 16 until next month and is busy with sports commitments! DD (home after first year at uni) applied to a dozen local places and didn't hear back from any of them. (Luckily she landed a one-month paid internship in her specialist field, through her uni.)

closethedrawer · 20/07/2023 09:39

DS has been pot washing/veg peeling at a local pub, but he's been there for awhile so hasn't needed to job hunt.

His friends are either working at McDonald's or the local theme park. I have to say, I'm glad he's at neither.

3sthemagicnumber · 20/07/2023 10:37

Seaside town here too and I think about half of the 16 year olds I know who have actively looked for jobs have found them. DD has kept on with her usual job working in a takeaway two evenings a week, and has picked up some extra shifts covering people's holidays.

TeddybearBaby · 20/07/2023 11:09

My DS has been labouring for a local builder, really proud of him because it’s a long day. His train is at 7.30am and it’s a long day for not much money tbh!

Received an email about results and they’re being emailed, wasn’t expecting that as everyone I’ve spoken to is going in.

NCTDN · 20/07/2023 13:57

Ds earns £5.20 an hour I think.

BonjourCrisette · 20/07/2023 17:05

DD was planning to get a job. But instead she unexpectedly got into the National Youth Theatre so instead of her earning money we have had to pay £500 for the intake course she has to go on. Ho hum.

christmastreefarm · 20/07/2023 17:12

My DD is still 15 so struggling to find a job. She got an interview and then they said no when realised she was still 15 and kissed a call from another one for an interview who then filled all interview slots before we could get back to them (2 hours later when they picked up the phone) and said sorry too late.

Wow! What great opportunity, and thoroughly deserved I'm sure. But ouch at the fees😁.

Rowgtfc72 · 20/07/2023 19:02

@BonjourCrisette oh wow! Pricey but what an opportunity!

Asked at school this morning about gcse day. Someone will email dd before the day. At some point. The secretary thinks. And then laughed.

BonjourCrisette · 20/07/2023 19:10

Well, it is a great opportunity, and I do think she's done really well. But I was slightly looking forward to her getting a job tbh! I guess there is plenty of time in the future for that. The fees are a bit crazy. I believe there are bursaries for people who can't afford it but we wouldn't qualify. It is still a big expense (that I wasn't expecting)!

DD says they will get their results emailed to them on the day after 9am. It seems quite close now!

Changes17 · 21/07/2023 07:51

Well done to your dd, @BonjourCrisette ! That’s a great opportunity

minisnowballs · 21/07/2023 09:18

How brilliant for her @BonjourCrisette !

DD1 has been really unwell this week - which I suspect is a reaction to a week of NCS then a week in Poland with friends and not enough sleep. Really ruined her 16th birthday so she is a bit sad.

Next week her nannying job kicks in - taking children to the cinema for cash is her idea of a very good time and it's only afternoons so she can get up late. Perfect for a teen who needs a bit of a rest since they're year 7 and year 4 so not babies. She's also been babysitting a 14 month old, which is rather harder work.

BonjourCrisette · 21/07/2023 10:45

Thanks, everyone. I am very proud of her really, despite the slightly unwelcome cost.

Taking children to the cinema for cash is an excellent job to have!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 21/07/2023 16:05

DS2

PennywisePoundFoolish · 21/07/2023 16:06

Whoops! DS2s school have advised they don't put results on Go4Schools, so either DS2 collects them or an adult with a letter from him giving consent. I think DS2 will be embarrassed if he sent either of us but no way could he cope with going himself.

reluctantbrit · 21/07/2023 18:33

Hi, just found this.

DD has finally made up her mind to which 6th form to go and is working through transition work the school set..

No job here, she only turned 16 last week and even with that, too many 6th forms and a large college means there are too many 18 year olds to compete with.

We did a couple of day trips and she still did her volunteering and sports/theatre group.

She has a week drama workshop and then we are off on holiday.

After results day I have to drag her shopping, the 6th form insists on business dress for the students. I think they haven't realised that my business dress as a middle office city banker is now jeans and trainers unless we have external visitors/clients once in a blue moon.

DarkChocHolic · 21/07/2023 21:46

DD had her first interview yesterday and didn't get the job.
Poor girl is understandably upset.
She thought she would easily land one when she turned 16.
They have to sadly learn its hard out there.
I need to pull some cheering tricks out of my bag!
