@Jo14357
Did you mean OCR maths or computer science?

Jo14357 · 19/05/2023 18:32

DD found Edexel higher Maths very hard today, not helped by the fact she has a cold, spent the entire exam coughing and is now in bed with a temperature. I am concerned that it might be Covid but if I test and it's positive she will probably freak out. Not sure what to do other than hope it passes over the weekend 🙈

Oh goodness, poor child.

Maybe do a mercy dash to a pharmacy and buy pain killers, echinacea and teen vitamins or elderberry syrup and pop her out in the sunshine to get some Vit D when she feels up to it.

Does she get hayfever? That might be kicking off, too.

Wishing her a speedy recovery!

Circleoffifths · 19/05/2023 19:07

DD said Edexcel maths higher paper was ‘shit’. A group of them all compared answers afterwards and it seems they all had different answers for the same questions. She’s predicted an 8 and she needs a 6 for the 6th form she wants to go to.

One of her friends who wants to do Maths A-level vomited twice in the park beforehand through nerves 😔.

CornishCoast · 19/05/2023 19:12

@SilverGlitterBaubles hope she feels better soon.

BonjourCrisette · 19/05/2023 19:21

@SilverGlitterBaubles Hope she feels better soon and it's not covid. Can you dose her up a bit before exams if she is still unwell? A bit of Day Nurse or similar can work wonders in clearing your head with a bad cold. Or Sudafed is good too.

Nervous as DD finished the Comp Sci paper with plenty of time left and found it pretty straight forward. From experience that often means she has missed something

My DS said the Computer Science paper was easy but then it's his favourite subject. However he found Maths hard ☹️

BaconAndAvocado · 19/05/2023 19:41

DS2 has just been telling me about one of the Maths questions doing the round on SM. It was about tomatoes and carrots, ratio. He said it was impossible but a lot of his friends said they think they got it right!

DS said it was simple and was just about turning ratios into fractions but apparently a lot of people struggled with that.

Computer Science went well. All in all a pretty good first week. Next week looks a bit trickier for DS - lots of English which is his nemesis! I'm just glad it's the weekend - DD's first ALevel went well but she seems exhausted by it all now and the next is only 6 days away with a lot of revision to be done.

yikes88 · 19/05/2023 20:04

SilverGlitterBaubles - it doesn't sound like covid and hopefully with rest , fluids, calpol and nurofen, things will settle over the weekend. But I do think you should do a covid test, both for your DD ( hope she gets better soon) but also for those sitting the exam around her....

SilverGlitterBaubles · 19/05/2023 20:14

Thanks all, pharmacy dash tomorrow morning and keeping everything crossed 🤞

My DS is thinking of doing the next maths paper back to front so he can leave the exam on a high and like he is capable as opposed to stressed because of the very difficult questions at the end. Does anyone have an opinion on doing it that way? Makes me nervous for some reason!

Problem with this is if it takes a while to get through the harder questions then there won’t be time for the easier questions - and the easy marks.

Circleoffifths · 19/05/2023 20:29

I have just seen on TikTok that there is a maths teacher who is going to be sharing answers to today’s paper 24 hours after the paper has finished. Apparently that’s allowed within the guidance. What fresh hell is this?

Hersetta427 · 19/05/2023 20:49

My daughters teacher is going to take today’s paper and write them all two practice papers based on things that didn’t come up today (or came up at an easy level) so they can work on those things for part 2 and 3. Bless him. He is still very young and keen (this is his first gcse class as he has only been teaching for 2 years.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 19/05/2023 20:51

DS just spent 20 mins recreating/explaining the tomatoes/carrot question for me (his decision not mine!) Tbh it just made me hungry!

bendmeoverbackwards · 19/05/2023 21:03

@Stircrazyschoolmum that question is driving me mad! Dh has got his head around it but I haven’t.

Beccaboo822 · 19/05/2023 21:35

Anyone got any guesses on what the inspector calls paper could feature?

iwantavuvezela · 19/05/2023 21:52

DD wasn't overly impressed with AQA maths *she is really invested in doing well) - got thrown by a question, and then felt like she lost her focus - anyway onwards we go - she is having a well deserved night off tonight

My dd complained that they went straight from the maths exam to booster classes for next week when all they wanted to do was decompress and talk about the exam so she would probably watch that. Like Gogglebox for exams. Grin

SheilaFentiman · 19/05/2023 22:00

Night off here too - geography And chemistry over the weekend!

CornishCoast · 19/05/2023 22:18

@Hersetta427 that’s so lovely to hear.

HappiDaze · 19/05/2023 22:47

DD thinks she got the carrot 🥕 question right. She went back to it once she'd finished and had a lightbulb 💡 moment apparently and got her head around it.

MoFoFlo · 19/05/2023 22:57

DD did the OCR foundation maths today and thought it went pretty well. She needs a 4 for college and has been getting 4s and 5s on test papers in the run up, so feeling hopeful. School have been really supportive with targeted maths revision.

She’s got a full day training tomorrow as she’s competing at nationals next weekend, so planning on doing an hour’s revision when she gets up as she’ll be exhausted tomorrow night.
