Is everyone's child doing the non-calculator maths today?

I think so

We then have computer science this afternoon!

mumonthehill · 19/05/2023 06:12

Good morning! Lets hope Maths goes well.

MerylSqueak · 19/05/2023 06:53

This sounds like a lovely thread. May I join?

DD is in y10 but she's had a tough time for various reasons and EngLit ( which she's good at) she found tough for the poetry (WJEC).
.
Wishing you all a calm send off to school and all your DCs good luck in their Maths this morning.

It's so so true!
My ds has it in his brain, every teacher has said he's clever but he finds it harder to get it down on paper. He's got a massive passion for plants, Biology is his strongest subject and he loves plant science. His ideal job would be to work at somewhere like Kew Gardens nurturing the rare plants and seeds!

This is exactly ds. He wanted to be a vet, but struggled to express his ideas clearly, it’s so frustrating. He now wants to be a therapist.
I am praying to everything that he gets decent enough grades to have choices. He is such a lovely person.
Really hope maths and computer science goes well for them all today.

ElfDragon · 19/05/2023 06:58

Morning, all.

dd is not looking too happy this morning. I know she’s been dreading maths. Hopefully she will get through it ok, and round off this first week (which has gone well for her, overall) in a vaguely positive manner.

good luck to everyone today

I'm sure DS said he was doing the calculator paper today but it would not be unusual for him to be wrong about these things.

kidstaxidriver · 19/05/2023 07:00

@MerylSqueak my DS also hated the WJEC poetry - had to take a bit of a punt and that poem was not one he was keen on! Nevermind, one week nearly over!

Dinofantastic · 19/05/2023 07:02

Good luck all. Watching several friends retaking their Maths this morning. Fingers crossed.

BobBobBobbing · 19/05/2023 07:14

Can I join as well?

Ds1 has dyspraxia and processing difficulties. Adhd is also a possibility. The subjects he loves he's doing well in, but English is his nemesis. Complete paralysis when confronted with a blank page even though he can tell his tutor and teacher the right answers verbally. He's walked out of exams having written nothing before because he panics. We had a win with Lit earlier this week as he actually wrote something, but most of our hopes are pinned on language where he got a 3 in his mocks. 6th form said they'll take him if he fails English, but he'd have to resit and that's the last thing he wants.

Maths non-calc and computing today which he likes.

Felixinthefactory · 19/05/2023 07:15

@Hellocatshome OCR is definitely calc today. Hope it goes well!

clary · 19/05/2023 07:21

Good luck all with maths (and anything ejse) today.

Night before his first maths paper, ds2 decided he didn't have a protractor...cue me going to about 56 shops before I found one! The things we do eh.

ggccsseeeee · 19/05/2023 07:27

Been lurking- DD just left for school and Maths!

Not too bad a week other than the IGCSE Biology horror but trying to forget about that and Praying Paper 2 will better... Although her school also does iGCSE Chemistry which is not her favourite at the best of times.

I have also been invigilating at another school this week so seeing it from both sides!

mrsnjw · 19/05/2023 07:29

Good luck to all. Can't believe that's the first week over nearly.

DS goes to school in a deprived area. They know most of the kids will turn up without equipment so they give everyone a clear pencil case with all the equipment needed in at the beginning of each exam and take it back at the end. This is the only good thing they have done in the 5 years he has been there but credit where credit is due I think its an excellent idea.

Beccaboo822 · 19/05/2023 07:31

Good Luck everyone today!!!

ggccsseeeee · 19/05/2023 07:31

Forgot to say Good Luck to everyone! Good Luck!

Invigilator here- we have had to give out about 30 protractors sometimes. Lots of kids come in with nothing but a pen and sometimes not even that.

kidstaxidriver · 19/05/2023 07:34

@clary also had to source a ruler! That wasn’t drawn or or scratched!
@Hellocatshome what a wonderful idea!
@ggccsseeeee we are iGCSE for all 3 sciences so totally worried like you! The Bio was such a terrible start
best of luck all with all subjects today and hope they all come home happy enough

dizzygirl1 · 19/05/2023 07:35

I spoke with dd last night. She found history hard, they hadn't done (and we certainly hadnt revised him!) she chose the other question so hopefully she has enough.
She found Business easy and came back on a high from that.
Maths today so.shes nervous. 5 down by lunch 13 to go I think.

Clymene · 19/05/2023 07:37

This is my guide for checking we have the right things in the right exams:

(Not our school, just found online).

StandUpForYourRights · 19/05/2023 07:39

Good luck for all today. We have non-calc maths today.

pinkflop · 19/05/2023 07:41

Mine also has non calc maths today. He's currently singing away to himself so that's a good sign 😂

Gosh....
Mind u the only reason why my son never forgets anything is because I have to remind him!!

AfingeroffudgeisNOTenough · 19/05/2023 07:59

DD away happily to do Maths paper today. She’s only in 4th year but doing paper 1 of maths a year early seems to be the norm these days. She’s done a few other papers already this week and then has one more mid-June. She’s confident with the maths so I’m just hoping it goes well. I’m not concerned about her eventual grade (she’s good at maths and consistently sits on very high grades A/A*) but I know it’ll knock her confidence if she struggles with it and she has internal school exams
next week so I want her to stay buoyant. History went better than expected yesterday which was a real boost to her. As with DD1 who is sitting A levels this year, it’s less about their ability and knowledge and much more about their headspace in this house.
