Hello everyone, here is a shiny new thread ready for DC’s results day tomorrow and a much needed hand hold for us nervous parents. 🥴🤪

Tomorrow is the culmination of an incredibly turbulent 2 year journey that our young people have had to navigate. Fraught with ups and downs. They have done us all proud!!

Here is a link to the previous thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/secondary/4566030-current-year-11-2-more-weeks-of-exams?page=37&reply=119483572

My son sat foundation maths and got 199 and a grade 5, but it looks like he could only get a max grade of 5? Would he have done better if he'd been placed on the higher paper?

My Dd is fairly devastated as well. She got mostly 8 and some 7s but had been predicted 9s all the way through school. The hard truth is that she didn't revise nearly as much as she should have done.
She was 1 mark off a 9 in history and 1 mark off an 8 in English Lang so am trying to find out how we ask for a remark, the schools website is rubbish for details. She has what she needs for A levels but is now convinced she shouldn't do maths a level having got a 7 in it.

You are right foundation tier is capped at a 5.
Who knows which choice is better? If school thought he might panic with a harder paper, and with harder content to learn, then a safe 5 is better than bombing out and failing which can happen easily enough.

And we've similar for statistics raw score of 111 but grade 5. Should he have been sitting the higher paper?

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE:

My DD went to a v competitive grammar where you had to get a 7 in a subject to continue at A Level. She got a 6 in one of her chosen 3. School said she couldn't do it at A Level, so she had to pick another subject - chose English Literature (where she had done exceptionally well at GCSE but hadn't really previously considered).

When we got a breakdown of the paper/section scores for her level 6 subject, one of them had been recorded as 0. Ordered a remark and it was a complete clerical/admin error and she was immediately bumped up to a 7 as her marks in that part hadn't been counted so could switch. However, by then she was enjoying English so much she opted to stick with it.

She's now just finished her first year studying English Literature at an RG uni and is happy as a pig in shit.

So - don't be afraid to challenge grades if you think they're wrong, even if you're not a couple of marks away from boundaries. And don't be afraid to follow a different path than the one you thought they would. I could kiss the person who recorded that 0!!!

GingerPushkin · 25/08/2022 13:40

@EngHOD thank you for the response. right, i will contact his teacher- we've never troubled the school before so i feel justified! i'm perfectly reconciled to the fact that- given both are 4s, these are likely correct but i'll check anyway. believe it or not he's been predicted 8s in all subjects since year 7 but that's utter bollocks and teachers have always raised an eyebrow when they've seen these predictions. it's a big, city comp and he's a quiet kid (born in august)- i just feel it's been a bit crap up to press. i hope 6th form works out for him- his history form will consist of 6 other pupils so i have high hopes. thank you again :)

Watapalava · 25/08/2022 13:42

My dd scored 1 mark off 7 in 2 subjects

school haven’t mentioned remarking but gave us fee sheet saying it’s £38 for remark and have left us to sort it

on here some are saying their schools have submitted requests - are they doing this automatically?

Watapalava · 25/08/2022 13:42

Lots of our bright kids have scored badly on AQA eng language

testingtesting · 25/08/2022 13:44

Has anyone got advice as to how to decipher the Pearson History grade boundaries? The code on DS's paper is 1HIAAW but I can't work out which one that correlates to!

whenwillthemadnessend · 25/08/2022 13:44

How do you know what mark your child got to check grade boundaries?

I'm super pleased with dd results. A real mixed bag but passed everything and had a massive MH issue in year ten so I'm really proud of her resilience.

I'd love to see how close she is in maths tho to the next grade.

Watapalava · 25/08/2022 13:46

The marks are on the results paper next to the grade

TheOnlyMrsW · 25/08/2022 13:47

@Purple24 DD was one mark off an 8 in Biology, 2 off an 8 in German and 3 off an 8 in Physics when we go in for sixth form enrolment later we're going to ask about a mark review as two of these are A levels subjects (at the moment watch this space!!!). Also 3 marks off a 9 in Chemistry but leaving that one, I'd be interested to hear how other schools are looking at these - all AQA.
Oddly she also got a 9 in AQA English Lit which was unexpected and what's causing the dithering about A level choices 😱

toomanychickens · 25/08/2022 13:49

Bizarrely dd was very worried about passing English language (AQA) and she got 8. Absolutely gobsmacked! She was pleased with her results - mix of 9s, 8s & 7s

GingerPushkin · 25/08/2022 13:50

@Watapalava thanks for the info and certainly interesting that others have scored low on eng lang. i have no idea what school is doing if anything re remarks-and son not a mine of information in that respect! it's hit me now and i'm blubbing- obviously without him seeing me!

daffodilandtulip · 25/08/2022 13:50

@TeenDivided not at all, she got pretty much full marks in any assessment all through, and got majority of 9s in her mocks (both times, they did before Xmas and before Easter).

I'm so proud of her but she's having none of it. Giving her sympathy today but I'll be telling her to get a grip if she's still moaning tomorrow!

Whatever the grades, we feel their pain and disappointment don't we. So sorry your DD is struggling so much.

TattiePants · 25/08/2022 13:50

@Watapalava DS went in for his results and I waited outside. When he came out he said there was a form already completed for him to agree for a review of his English Language. No mention of us having to pay or having to do anything.

GingerPushkin · 25/08/2022 13:54

@EngHOD if you happen to see this..or anyone else- son doesn't have a mark for Eng lang- just a capital P in the "end1" column. he has 61 for Eng lit. any light that can be shed is welcome :)

TattiePants · 25/08/2022 13:54

@whenwillthemadnessend it seems to be school dependent. DS has received a sheet with all his results on (eg 9-1) but hasn't been given his actual mark.

maddy68 · 25/08/2022 13:55

OliviaBond · 25/08/2022 13:36

The questions are harder on the higher paper so the chances of him getting a 5 would be lower teachers go through agony selecting the right paper. So many assessments will have taken place trust them. They know what they are doing

Watapalava · 25/08/2022 13:55

The P stands for Pass for the spearhead they will have done

Thanks for the reassurance you too @TeenDivided

EngHOD · 25/08/2022 14:01

@GingerPushkin the grade 8s you mention will be his TARGET grades, based on prior attainment at KS2. Those can be high sometimes but it’s the grades teachers have been predicting him tell the real story of what they were expecting of him.

EngHOD · 25/08/2022 14:03

@GingerPushkin the P is probably a ‘Pass’ in the spoken language element of the exam. Marks don’t seem to have been passed on for some reason for Lang but the school will have them!
