Hello everyone, here is a shiny new thread ready for DC’s results day tomorrow and a much needed hand hold for us nervous parents. 🥴🤪

Tomorrow is the culmination of an incredibly turbulent 2 year journey that our young people have had to navigate. Fraught with ups and downs. They have done us all proud!!

Here is a link to the previous thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/secondary/4566030-current-year-11-2-more-weeks-of-exams?page=37&reply=119483572

Well done to everyone here.

If your DC hasn't done as well as they hoped, we have been there before. My daughter did her GCSEs four years ago. She underperformed (5-6 except for art). She persuaded the school to let her do the A levels she wanted to even though she didn't quite have the required grades. She did much better in her A levels (one was sat as an exam in November 2020 which went up a grade from her mocks which were used for her CAGs) and has done really well in her first year exams at a RG University. No one is interested in her GCSE grades any more!

CatLadyDrinksGin · 25/08/2022 12:57

All good here thankfully- five 9s, three 8s and a 6 for art (was predicted). Into the 6th form for the A levels she wanted, so relieved! Think I was more stressed than she was!!

Stormchaser1502 · 25/08/2022 13:00

dd devastated here too. Triple science grades down 2 grades to what was expected. Plus English grades predicted 8 in language (which she got a 4 in!!!!) and an 8 in lit (which she got)

how can it go from an 8 to a 4?!?!

School have requested her papers….

LouisCatorze · 25/08/2022 13:03

Thanks @EngHOD . DD didn't hang around to ask the teachers anything so we will be none the wiser (particularly as she won't be going into sixth form at the same school). Heyho.

My son was the same, had B's and C's, we are in Wales so no numbers. Didn't stop him from doing his A levels and he came away with ABCC. He chose not to go to an RG uni. Well done to all, it's been a tough few years.

MrsAvocet · 25/08/2022 13:04

So sorry to read that @TeenDivided It must be so tough when she has given it her all and the effort hasn't been rewarded. Do her teachers have any suggestions?
I know it's easy to say when you're not in that position, but I'm sure there will be a right path for her. Personal qualities, particularly a great work ethic, really do matter and you can't put a value on a person as a result of their grades. I really hope the coming months and years bring her happiness and success.

MsTSwift · 25/08/2022 13:07

Weirdly was almost more excited that my lovely friends non academic Dd got her maths than my own dds string of 9s. Such a lovely girl

spiderlight · 25/08/2022 13:07

In Wales here and just finishing Y10 so we only have a handful of results so far, but my DS has done far better than we'd expected. He got a C and a B for his English lit written paper and his Shakespeare controlled assessment, respectively (not sure how that will shake down into the final result, though), an A for physics and an A-equivalent grade for this year's part of the Welsh Bacc, and Bs for maths numeracy (which we were massively worried about), chemistry and biology. He was convinced he'd bombed physics, which is his favourite subject, so he's over the moon with that one, and the three sciences contribute 40% of his final grade, so it's nice to have them in the bag. I had rather rashly promised him a flying lesson if he got all As and Bs in his sciences, so I need to sort that out now!!

GingerPushkin · 25/08/2022 13:08

@EngHOD hi there- would be very interested in your thoughts on english results. my son has "gained" 4s in lit and lang- i thought he'd get higher! he received 5s and 6s in mocks having done bugger all in his school career; after those results i fucking hothoused him in the 2 months prior to the exams- so i don't understand!! i know hothousing not brilliant way to do things but means to an end. he's not doing english at A level- but he's going to need 5s anyway for jobs etc. he did AQA- i can't understand it- i'm feeling a bit wobbly. thanks for any info.

TeenDivided · 25/08/2022 13:09

@MrsAvocet I will want the breakdown of marks, and then to discuss with them whether resitting in November is worth it. She is 'better' now than in May/June. I also want to discuss with them again re having a scribe. The answer before was 'she can't have a scribe because she doesn't use a scribe'. I know there are pros and cons to it but I think it would help her stamina.

She did a L1 course last year and is doing a related L1 course this year, we're just fed up of English & maths.

isitme111 · 25/08/2022 13:09

Well done to all our kids. Out of 7 subjects - One distinction and a mix of 4/5's here despite moderate additional needs. We are very proud today. Teendivided, so sorry to hear your daughter is devestated. It's so unfair to insist kids resit maths and English GCSE. Would level 2 functional skills in English be an option for your DD..

TeenDivided · 25/08/2022 13:14

Would level 2 functional skills in English be an option for your DD
Possibly. But if she had sat maths & English just before lockdown she'd probably have passed them. She's just not fully better yet. It is difficult knowing what to do for the best.

TattiePants · 25/08/2022 13:14

Well done to all our DC, whether they got the grades they were hoping to or not, they've all done so well in such trying circumstances.

DS is pretty disappointed as his results are quite a bit lower than his mocks. He got 4s for English, 5 for computer science and 6s for everything else. He had 7's for maths and sciences and an 8 for geography in his mocks so he really thought he'd get similar. I'm absolutely over the moon though. He's struggled with his mental health this year in addition to his SEN so I'm just so very proud.

DS has only received a sheet with his results, no raw scores although he was one off a grade 5 for language so school have submitted a review for that.

LottieZ · 25/08/2022 13:16

Well my dd who had convinced herself that she’d failed all her exams ended up getting
2 x 9’s
2 x 7’s
2 x 6’s
2 x 5s

I’m so happy for her but I’m also happy that she’s the most laid back kid and didn’t put endless amounts of pressure on herself. A few of the kids in her year were crying in the hall over the fact they didn’t get 9’s across the board and the pair of us (in our heads) we’re thinking for gods sake really.

Hi
4 is definitely a pass - a low pass but a pass nonetheless
Most / all jobs ask for a pass in Maths and English so 4 is fine
Whether it will stay like this in the future (years away) is another matter
I had to redo my Maths this year - to be able to do my teaching qualification and got a 4 - job done!

LottieZ · 25/08/2022 13:16

Excuse the typos. I pressed submit to soon.

wineandsunshine · 25/08/2022 13:17

Well I am literally speechless - thought my DS was going to fail English and he got a grade 7!!

SO so proud of him!

OliviaBond · 25/08/2022 13:20

Where do we find the marks and grade boundaries?

MumofSpud · 25/08/2022 13:22

OliviaBond · 25/08/2022 13:20

Where do we find the marks and grade boundaries?

Just go on the relevant exam board website
Although I have just done this and DD scrapped into a 6 in English Lit by 1 point!!

Not for the faint hearted!!

GingerPushkin · 25/08/2022 13:23

@MumofSpud thank you so much- i feel better knowing he probably won't need to resit and can forget all about poetry and shakespeare. i have to say, i can't believe he received 4s given how much coaching i gave him- good job you're the teacher and not me :)

TeenDivided · 25/08/2022 13:23

@EngHOD Is it better to keep trying with Eng Lang or switch to Functional Skills? (DD has EHCP which might permit more flexibility. For what it's worth I think she can pass the GCSE when well enough. Are the FS exams any shorter?)

x2boys · 25/08/2022 13:27

Jessica65789021 · 25/08/2022 12:29

I'm having a few beers after I found out pmy DD results ,while she's trying to reassure me that fives and fours are good I'm still worried

Of course they are ,they are my sons will sit his GCSE,s next year I would be delighted with grade fours and fives ,they are enough to go onto the next stage .

GingerPushkin · 25/08/2022 13:27

@MumofSpud god that sounds like i'm making it about me- i'm just disappointed as would have been good to have the boost of a good english grade but he's probably less bothered than me. he did call wordsworth a "pussy" while we were attempting one of his poems, so i guess english really isn't his thing, ha!

EngHOD · 25/08/2022 13:28

@GingerPushkin definitely disappointing that he has received lower grades than in his mocks. First thing to do is to check with the school what marks he received in all papers. I would suggest that considering he got the same grade in both Lang and Lit, those probably do reflect how he performed rather than any issue with grading/ examiner error but it’s worth checking the spread of marks across papers for any outliers.

What did the school predict?

Youcanlaugh · 25/08/2022 13:29

My son was really disappointed with his English Lit grade the most, as well. It’s by far his strongest subject and he was predicted 8s for Lit and Lang and the teacher said just before them he could definitely achieve 9’s. He got 9s in both his mocks. Now he has a 9 for his GCSE English Language but a 6 for Literature.

He has the grades he needs for the college and subjects he wants to do…. Is it worth asking for a review if it doesn’t matter really…? He’s absolutely baffled as he came out convinced he had smashed that one!
