Hello everyone, here is a shiny new thread ready for DC’s results day tomorrow and a much needed hand hold for us nervous parents. 🥴🤪

Tomorrow is the culmination of an incredibly turbulent 2 year journey that our young people have had to navigate. Fraught with ups and downs. They have done us all proud!!

Here is a link to the previous thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/secondary/4566030-current-year-11-2-more-weeks-of-exams?page=37&reply=119483572

DD didn't hang around school to absorb any 'intel' from the teachers or other pupils, so none the wiser as to whether there were surprises, whether the cohort did as well (better or worse) as predicted.

To those of you who are secondary school teachers too, what is your sense about the results? I know with the A Levels some subjects seemed to have 'stingier' grade boundaries than for others. Any insights would be interesting to hear.

Porcupineintherough · 25/08/2022 12:08

@LouisCatorze same here, also AQA. Odd.

CupboardOfThings · 25/08/2022 12:10

Same here with no Eng Lang score.

DC got 6 x 9, 3 x 8 and a 7. So very proud of them!

LouisCatorze · 25/08/2022 12:11

@Porcupineintherough DC1's theory is that it suggests one of her papers has been lost (based on something that happened at their school some years back) but I find that unlikely.

Pertulagordinosbestmate · 25/08/2022 12:17

Forgot to add…
My younger DD has also achieved a grade 9 in French. Chuffed for her. She is only 13 😁
haven’t got the actual marks yet so the competition will be on between them to see who scored the highest 😂

Akite · 25/08/2022 12:19

Anyone know how to find the History Edexcel correct grade boundary? The option she did was History A option AR but I can't match that with anything on the grade boundaries sheet

NImumconfused · 25/08/2022 12:22

Just wondering about the differences between grade boundaries between exam boards - our local exam board in maths you had to get 395 out of 400 to get an A*, which they said was equivalent to a 9, but a pic posted earlier showing boundaries for another board was 194 out of 240 for a 9. Does that just mean our local exam was much easier than the other one so more people got very high marks?

JudgeJ · 25/08/2022 12:23

Brigante9 · 25/08/2022 11:01

Yes, we get the raw scores printed along with the grades. You can Google grade boundaries if that helps. Here they are:

Are schools now able to see the scripts or did I imagine reading this? We never did but that was a long time ago!

DFOD · 25/08/2022 12:23

@Lovemusic33 - I am raising a glass to you and your DD with a tear in my eye - she has come further (I suspect) than anyone on this thread - a spectacular trajectory and achievement - well done for all your support and encouragement whatever the results and I am cross she has to wait xxx

@Porcupineintherough DC1's theory is that it suggests one of her papers has been lost (based on something that happened at their school some years back) but I find that unlikely.

A few years ago a whole batch of papers went missing from my sister's school. They'd been sent out to the marker by the exam board and their neighbour had signed for them, slung them on the side and forgot about them.

Mangolist · 25/08/2022 12:25

Much joy here. 7s 8s and one 9. Knew she'd be okay really, but she has been through a lot of difficult stress so the happiness is especially shiny!

MrsAvocet · 25/08/2022 12:28

We didn't hang around either @LouisCatorze as DS needed to get to work. (School opened at 9.00 and he was back in the car at 9.04!) However, he's since messaged me to say that all his friends have done similarly or better than him and broadly they have been there or thereabouts compared to their predictions. No terrible shocks or big surprises, except perhaps DS's 8 for French. He was hoping for a 6 and would have been satisfied with a 5 so is very pleasantly surprised. I'm a bit sad he didn't get to see his teacher today actually as she really worked hard with what was recognised as a "difficult" class and I'm sure she'll be thrilled with DS's grade. Our school insists on EBacc subjects and I think the language teachers get a hard time as there are a lot of kids who are quite resentful about it, so I hope there are others like DS who have exceeded expectations.
But overall, the results I have heard from our school seem to be broadly as expected and quite similar to previous years. We're in North West England and they do mostly AQA with a couple of subjects being EdExcel. At our school at least, there doesn't seem to have been the big drop in grades that we were warned about.

murasaki · 25/08/2022 11:35

Well done all the dcs, sterling work after a difficult time. The outlier does seem to me to be eng lit from what people are saying, I'd take up @EngHOD's very kind offer if it were me.

EngLit seems to be the outlier for many students, wonder which Boards are involved?

Jessica65789021 · 25/08/2022 12:29

I'm having a few beers after I found out pmy DD results ,while she's trying to reassure me that fives and fours are good I'm still worried

spagbog5 · 25/08/2022 12:31

Very happy girl here !
So relieved for her and her friends

murasaki · 25/08/2022 12:33

Jessica, they are passes, so we'll done. What does she need for the next step?

TeenDivided · 25/08/2022 12:33

Am I the only person with a devastated DC who actually worked hard? She was resitting English, threw her whole being into it and still got a 3. She's battled anxiety, depression, dyspraxia & dyslexia. The exams were the first time since being ill she actually sat a whole paper in one go. She needs a break.

daffodilandtulip · 25/08/2022 12:41

@TeenDivided DD is also devastated. She's a high achiever, mocks and predicted were all 8/9. She worked harder after the mocks and has got 7/8. I know this is good, and I'm sorry for your DD - but there does seem to be a lot of unhappy people who've dropped a grade or two. Twitter seems very cross with AQA!

Chaotica · 25/08/2022 12:45

AQA were fine as far as DD was concerned, but she dropped grades with Edexcel.

redskyatnight · 25/08/2022 12:46

@TeenDivided I think it's so hard when "Success" is apparently measured via a number on a piece of paper. Lots of our young people have faced a variety of challenges (Covid related and otherwise) and have fought their own demons to get here. I think we should all commend them for that.

Your DD has succeeded in her own way and she will keep succeeding. All the best to her. I'm sorry that she didn't get the validation via her mark as well :(

Appledrop · 25/08/2022 12:46

Congrats to your daughter (for ref 5 = Lower B or high C
4 = Lower C grade which are great grades). What is she planning on doing next?

mushroom3 · 25/08/2022 12:46

The English Lit paper my son is a bit puzzled with is AQA paper 1. He felt he did better than paper 2 on it and yet he has a much lower mark. His teacher raised it with my son and said that the school would be applying for review of marks for it.

TeenDivided · 25/08/2022 12:46

@daffodilandtulip Sorry to hear that. Did your school overestimate? At least she can still do everything she wants with those grades and doesn't have to spend yet another year trying to pass a core subject.

DD wasn't even well enough to resit her maths this year so still has that to go too. (Sorry, having a pity party for myself as trying to stay strong for DD.)

EngHOD · 25/08/2022 12:47

@LouisCatorze sorry - name change fail! So, your DC’s teachers will have the mark breakdowns but I’ve just checked what we are passing on to students and it’s the same: no mark, only grade.

@JudgeJ the grade boundaries are by far and away not as generous as in Lang. Also factor in that it’s very dissimilar to past papers because there was an element dropped. I wonder if they’ve been harsher with grade boundaries because of the changes to the exam itself and now they’ve ended up not being as fair as they should have. Oddly, we have more grade 9s in Literature but overall better results in Lang. Probably down to passion for the texts though.

Purple24 · 25/08/2022 12:54

My DS was 1 mark off the next grade in two subjects, we've asked for a remark - hope this was the right thing to do, no experience with remarks?

Anyone know how long it takes?
