Your Year 11 child - when do they finish school?

Year 11 DD feels hard done by as her state school is keeping them in full time until Friday 11th June, whereas her cousin (also a state school and in the same local authority) breaks up for the summer tomorrow, 14th May. The disparity is crazy! Are these the two extremes of the spectrum?

28th May.

Dd is counting the days. Tests right up to the last day.

Back for sixth form orientation day on June 17th.

DinosaurDiana · 14/05/2021 08:40

Last Friday in May.

DinosaurDiana · 14/05/2021 08:42

They are off a long time until September, I hope the colleges/sixth forms make contact and continue to engage their brains.

usedtobeboss3 · 14/05/2021 08:58

Last assessment 9 June, then in school until the end of term (July 3) after an extra week off in June. Independent, half school are boarders. A mix of pre Alevel stuff, some trips, a bit of careers guidance, sports day etc. Am glad - not just because we're paying for it(!) but because the summer holidays feel plenty long enough in a normal year, and I think any more time off this year would be too much.

TinyDancer78 · 14/05/2021 11:40

28th May here. Counting down the days...

Silkiecats · 14/05/2021 20:45

Not got a y11 but believe its very end of May and they have a leavers ball.

mumofthree22 · 15/05/2021 00:17

My year 11 son has his final week of exams next week and his last exam next Friday 21st and then has a week off in addition to the half term week. Straight back into school on the 7th of June till 9th July. They have a few weeks to familiarise with their Alevel subjects and decide if they are happy with subjects or want to change them, a week of work experience, leavers ball end of June and some careers/ life skills work. Also some fun activities organised for them to bond over which they missed in lockdown.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/05/2021 00:21

28th of May, half term.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/05/2021 00:24

@mumofthree22 the 9th of July? That’s very odd, they stop being csa on June 25th.

YerAWizardHarry · 15/05/2021 00:28

I’m in Scotland but we would always go back to school after exams until the summer holidays (start of July) except our final year as our courses for the next year would start. Although we stay at the same school for our senior years

mumofthree22 · 15/05/2021 08:43

@MyDcAreMarvel
My DC are at independent schools in England so all year 11's stay at school till the official end of school year.

ineedaholidaynow · 15/05/2021 10:00

My DS is at private school and he finishes officially on 8th June. They may do some extra sessions for those going into 6th form but they will be optional

Comefromaway · 15/05/2021 10:05

My son’s girlfriend has finished all her assessments but is being made to stay in school for “activities.” The school (as is common in our area) doesn’t have a 6th form, everyone leaves after year 11 for college. It all seems pointless.

Yet at the local private school which does have a 6th form, the year 11 finished yesterday.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/05/2021 11:13

@mumofthree22 the last Friday in June is the official end of the school year for year 11.

mumofthree22 · 15/05/2021 11:29

@MyDcAreMarvel It may be for state schools but isn't applicable to private schools as they run their own term dates . Maybe all schools are different but it's 9th July at my sons school which I'm happy with as they have missed enough school with lockdown and they get a head start with Alevels and are able to get their DofE expeditions and other life skills can be undertaken.

Hoppinggreen · 15/05/2021 11:33

Mid June.
It’s a Private school and as they are charging us until the end of term I suppose they have to justify it somehow

Comefromaway · 15/05/2021 11:37

My daughters vocational school always ran until 9/10 July as well. However it’s an exception to the rule. Following the end of exams the kids went into a full rehearsal timetable for the summer show. Even last year they continued a full timetable of online dance classes for Year 11 & Year 14.

There would be nothing stopping anyone leaving after June. At the local private school there is a big shift around for 6th form. Lots leave for a very good local college who offer a wider range of subjects but others join from local state schools.

So apart from an induction day it would be pointless keeping the kids after exams.

chilledteacher · 15/05/2021 11:45

11th June for mine but the last week is a very selective timetable where some will be in and some won't. Prom sometime in July I think.

I've organised him some work experience as he missed it in year 11 and I think he's got some college induction days.

chilledteacher · 15/05/2021 11:45

State, forgot that bit.

BiBabbles · 15/05/2021 12:36

June 29th (state, in a KS4 specialty vocational programme at a college where he's in one day a week and learning at home the other 4), though he's completed his assessments and they're mainly doing activities that they missed - like, they were doing Formula One car school challenge when things were locked down, and now they're getting a chance to finish theirs alongside the Y10s doing the same along with more time discussing next steps and careers and things.

Iamsodone · 15/05/2021 12:55

What will your Y11 DS do over the summer ? Mine in school until 18th June then DofE expedition.
But otherwise nothing except for our family holiday and some babysitting.

Is NCS a good idea at that stage ?
Looking for ideas

TeenMinusTests · 15/05/2021 13:02

DD will be doing

  • weekly therapy/counselling
  • 2 week holiday if we can get her onto the ferry
  • pushing her boundaries around going places
  • finding a cat
  • catching up on eye, dentist, haircuts, sorting college uniform
  • possibly some biology tuition in prep for college
  • and after 12 August probably some maths

We would have looked at NCS if it were a normal year.

karenb40 · 15/05/2021 13:17

@BBOA I think our children may be at the same school as mine also finished yesterday and we are in Wiltshire.
Far too early, mine's only 15 and can't find a job

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 15/05/2021 13:19

Yesterday in all 5 schools in my area although they may be called in up until Whitsun break so don't officially finish until then.

KateTheEighth · 15/05/2021 13:38

Last assessments on 8th June and that's it
