What does 3 and 4 mean in the old letter gcse's?

I know 9 is the top grade and 1 is the bottom. But not sure what number is equivalent to the old C grade and what 3 and 4 would be in the old system.

piggy our school will take 5s for some subjects, higher for others - it's on a case by case basis. They also look at the whole picture so if a student does badly in their GCSEs but have consistently shown they can do better, allowances are made.

And you're completely correct about writing style - DD2 got a 9 in English lang and she definitely doesn't write like a teenager. She writes according to the topic she is writing on, so we've had florid Gothic horror, Ray Bradbury-esque science fiction and Edgar Allan Poe-like melancholy. The key thing is that she does it 100% consistently in terms of vocabulary, sentence length and structure and narrative structure. Writing 'like a teenager' doesn't get you the 9 unless the context of what you are writing in the creative writing paper demands it.
