Is there a thread yet for parents with kids doing entrance exams in Jan? It's been so helpful looking through previous years threads and now we're going through it I'd love a hand-hold and any advice on what to expect!

Thanks all for replying back 're scholarships. I guess it all rides on interview. What is it they makes them decide if they want the child for Trinity? My DS is not a confident speaker (unless your talking about footy).

Bondi.. amazing news 're interview and W/DC.

Btw... I handed my T application by hand on the morning of deadline day and I am 146.. so seems like it is close to 150. Shock

aggie29 · 12/01/2019 20:38

Good evening to all. I was just wondering if anyone has heard back from Whitgift School about the 11plus? I saw one person has had an invite for an interview and was wondering if anyone else has...

plasterdisaster · 12/01/2019 20:57

We have interviews for both whitgift and trinity

aggie29 · 12/01/2019 21:24

where you contacted via email or post by whitgift as we haven’t heard anything yet?

Chelsea3 · 12/01/2019 21:32

Plasterdisaster.. is this for 10 plus or 11 plus interview?

BriefChangeofUserName · 12/01/2019 21:42

Hi aggie I had a call from Whitgift this afternoon inviting us for a 11+ interview next week.

Bondiboo74 · 12/01/2019 21:44

Thanks gambas - any tips gratefully received!
Chelsea - thank you. Trinity will work out what your son is interested in to get him to talk. They seem to be very used to all sorts of 10&11 year old boys.
Aggie29 - Whitgift phoned me today, not email or letter. That’s 11+ though.

aggie29 · 12/01/2019 22:14

Thanks for reply

aggie29 · 12/01/2019 22:15

Thanks for reply and good luck with your interview.

Jige · 12/01/2019 22:31

SpaceOpera thank you for your reply. I did think 200 was somewhat high Shock but then you never know.

Chelsea3 thank you so much, we can all guess, however the candidate number is more accurate. And since you handed your application on the last day means 150 ish (add a few late entries) is more a realist figure so thank you!! Smile Glad you managed to get the application in on time!

I know from previous threads that 3yrs ago the number was around 180, don't know whether this was a bulge year and last year was 150 ish.

Did your DS attend the T Music scholarship information morning back in November?
They outlined the process and what to expect on the day.
On the day itself, your DS will have a chance to warm up in one the lovely practice rooms, before being taken to the assessment room by the dir of music, who by the way is really nice and put the boys at ease.
If your DS requires a piano accompaniment, its likely that the dir of music or one of the staff will step in
The audition is about 15-20 mins, and then your DS will be returned to you. It's rather like going to a grade exam, where you sit and wait while for them return.
Congrats to your DS for getting this far. Remember that some applicants would not have been offered the chance to go for the audition/assessment.
BTW, the music at T really is excellent!

That' really good news. Best of luck with the interviews

SpaceOpera · 12/01/2019 23:07

Turboturtle thanks, yes, we attend that info session. I would like to hear people’s personal experience of their sons having been through it - specifically the ‘discussion’ part of the audition - if possible.

I am very pleased that DS has got this far! Thank you. However it is very eerie not knowing how strong the field is. Where he has won music awards in the past, all competitors had to play to the public and all parents heard all performances. I’m not wishing it was any different; just always been used to being fully involved in the process...if that makes sense.

Hi all,

My son sat Whitgift last year and they do give very thorough feedback at the interview - to the parents. Even had the exam papers there with the marks to discuss and if your son hasn't done as well as usual, they are happy to chat about it and we think they look at the fit and overall achievement. We had a choice of 7 independent schools in the end and even turned down a rugby scholarship elsewhere for Whitgift. My son loves it and it seems very rigorous on the academics. They understand boys very well! His mates are really genuine, solid and all rounded nice chaps and the travel there is fine. He gets the train.. Hope this helps!

Waterloo · 13/01/2019 09:31

We were told 250 sat the 10+ Whitgift and 1200 the 11+. Think that's a few more than last year! Good luck everyone - I'll be doing it again next year

Pickofthepops · 13/01/2019 09:50

1200! Explains the gridlock!

gambaspilpil · 13/01/2019 10:13

Waterloo my DS is in yr 7 at W too and we had an interview with the head of year. She was lovely and told us to tell our DS that he had done very well and that it was nice to see a DC who was humble. I totally agree with you about the academic rigour. My eldest went to W too and whilst it was still brilliant a few years ago, the academic standard has definitely got higher. Sounds like I may be standing next to you on the Rugby pitch!

SoupDragon · 13/01/2019 10:19

Ah.... this thread brings back happy memories :) my youngest DS is in his final year at T now and it seems so long ago that we did this with him and DS1.

I do nurture a small hope that DD will apply and get into 6th form there but I don't think she will.

Waterloo · 13/01/2019 10:28

I'm sure you are!!!! Bill Bright?! My husband James always goes as I can't watch any more :)

Waterloo · 13/01/2019 10:28

At Whitgift, I'm pretty sure you progress to the 6th form automatically

empower81 · 13/01/2019 10:42

Do they interview parents at Trinity as well

SoupDragon · 13/01/2019 10:45

At Whitgift, I'm pretty sure you progress to the 6th form automatically

Assuming it's like T then yes - provided you get a minimum standard at GSCE.

ivegotacold · 13/01/2019 10:50

waterloo _ you don't automatically progress to 6th form at Whitgift you are only offered a place if you meet an academic hurdle which is quite high. Trinity have a much lower required hurdle to progress to 6th form. Indicative of Whitgift Head's determination to improve academically.

Waterloo · 13/01/2019 10:52

Wow ok I didn't know that! I'm sure they told us you did at the interview but it makes sense. Will check it out and sorry for wrong info

gambaspilpil · 13/01/2019 10:58

waterloo when my eldest was at W he had to achieve a certain amount of points to progress to 6th form. Each grade equates to a point. If you didn’t get the points you could stay and do BTEC only or leave that was it.
