It has definitely been all about the cohort for DS. His move at year 9 to a superselective was the making of him. It was no longer geeky to study, it was fine to say you couldn't go out because you had to revise for a test and everyone was genuinely pleased for their friend's results.

However that was what suited him.

For a friend's child being top was what suited him and he may not have thrived being at the lower end of a superselective.

If you think your child may be led astray I would go for the former but if not then the latter helps confidence.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 25/08/2018 10:52

I'm not sure BlueBelle's DS has a choice.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 25/08/2018 10:59

Loose what subjects would give your DS more options? Would psychology and philosophy narrow his options post 18? Which are 'facilitating' subjects. Biology definitely is, can't remember about the others, but an A in philosophy would probably beat a C in biology whatever.

It's not all about what they enjoy, it needs to be somewhat about what they're good at as well, but pointless taking a subject you are good at but hate. I wish my DS3 would reconsider his choices and take physics over chemistry because his real skill is maths but he doesn't like physics and won't be persuaded.

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 11:33

Geography, the sciences maths history are all facilitating subjects. Thus is because they are deemed by units as most academic ( hard).

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 25/08/2018 11:36

Yes, there's a list but I couldn't remember about psychology or philosophy

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 11:36

Excuse typos. In car dgd doi g the shopping and still very excited about 6th form. Hoping it will be as social and nice for her as there are 3 girls going to same 6th form that are real b!

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 11:37

Think Philip Sophy might be one psychology and sociology deemed easy and not scientific by a lot of academics. I do not agree.

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 11:38

Philosophy for goodness sake!

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 25/08/2018 11:40

There's a list here. Also includes modern and ancient classical languages but not philosophy or psychology.

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 11:42

Dgd finds chemistry a lot easier than biology but got 8 for both, physics bores her but got 8 for that too. But she loves biology especially human so will suffer plant side till she gets to uni where she can specialise on human side if she decides to go down that route. She has not made a firm choice between neuroscience or geoscience or being a geography teacher (sigh)

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 25/08/2018 11:42

So, loose that might be another case for doing biology over philosophy. If his heart is set on psychology.

Cblue · 25/08/2018 11:44

psychology, philosophy and CS aren't facilitating BUT they are both highly respected by Universities along with RE and Economics.
Biology is facilitating but if DS doesn't like it, as @EllenJanesthickerknickers said an A in Philosophy trumps a C in Biology every day!

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 11:48

Next year dgd has the chance to go to Sri-lanka with her Bestie to help teach English at a school. She is definitely going to go as a great thing to have on a CV for uni. Dd and I have opened a joint account just for saving up for the trip for her. Besties parents a doctor and teacher and sometimes forget that dgd cones from a so called deprived background ( single working mum on minimum wage) simply because we make sure she doesn't do without. But we are so thankful they are helping her by giving her opportunities like thus and they are simply lovely, warm people who accept us as 'one of their social circle'. I love them to bits!

whistl · 25/08/2018 12:05

When I saw you mention Sri Lanka, Sostenueto, I initially thought you were going to say that there is going to be a geography field trip there!

it got me thinking ... is there a subject that is more expensive than Geography with all the field trips, maybe some of them abroad? I can't think of one.

Maths must surely be the cheapest?

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 25/08/2018 12:26

whistl I wouldn't count on maths being cheapest

www.nstgroup.co.uk/new-york-maths-school-trips

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 12:34

We should get help with bursaries dgd classed as from a deprived background (single working mum on minimum wage living in deprived town) but she's far from deprived! to pay for field trips.

Sostenueto · 25/08/2018 12:38

Well the Iceland trip last year was £1000 she didn't go as we would have had to apply to a charity for help. A bursary paid by the school is a different matter.

Oneteen · 25/08/2018 12:39

Oddly enough the Art trips next year are the most expensive trips being run by DD's school - New York and Japan...although they do an Australian exchange each year which doesn't normally work out too expensive because its an exchange.

DD managed to sneak onto the Japan trip ...the NY trip wasnt a bad price for NY @ £1000 4/5 nights including flights.

The only other trip that DD will do is Cern...

KittiesInsane · 25/08/2018 12:53

I’m starting to wish dd’s sixth form hadn’t nicely and kindly given her till Tuesday to rethink her subjects.
I thought she was sorted with English French and History. On Thursday she was favouring art and drama. By Friday it was going to be art history. Today she’s pondering biology (secret hankering to be a zoologist, but apparently she thought she wouldn’t be good enough - surprised herself with 887 across the sciences).

By Tuesday it could be physics, philosophy and media studies at this rate.

whistl · 25/08/2018 12:57

At DS's comp, the geography and History departments vied for the most expensive trips with Biology bringing up the rear!

Geography would think Iceland for volcanoes, Asia (Human Geography) and North Africa (sunbathing??!). History would be keen to go to the USA (because it will help learn about 1921-1973?) and Biology just fancied an Africa safari.

The MFL department looked positively modest after all that by just restricting themselves to Europe.

Cblue · 25/08/2018 13:24

Hahaha @KittiesInsane - welcome to my world!!
DD changed her mind from maths, CS and 3 x sciences (dropping chemistry) to
English History Maths and CS

Subject clash for CS so emailed the school on Thursday. Whilst waiting for the response she changed her mind to gov and politics instead of CS but there was still a clash so updated the school that she would do this if it's easier to timetable. Last night she decided that she would do psychology instead since there wouldn't be a clash and it's easier for everyone.

Today (yes, Saturday) the school rang to say that she could almost def do CS and they are in the process of retime tabling half the damn school and they would confirm mid week.

As soon as I got off the phone she said 'know what, I think I quite fancy psychology'

Arrrgggghhhh AngryAngryAngryAngryI am so cross I could beat her (if it wasn't illegal and if she wasn't a brown belt hahaha)
If they move CS for her then she's bloody well doing it!!!!!

.......sorry for rant

Susiesue61 · 25/08/2018 13:38

Hi all, long time lurker here!
Dd did well - 8in RE, 7 in sport, four 6s, 2 5s, one 4 and a B!
Much better than she was expecting and passed English 😊
Shes off ti do a Btec in cricket studies and can't wait!
Her older brother korma got all A* and A and got his A levels last week ABBC. She makes passing comments about him being cleverer and setting the bar too high, but she's better at cricket and football than him. We have the same issue with their cricket- we have to praise the boys for their acheivements as much as hers, and it works both ways then with the academic things! Your DD2 will have her strengths too 😊

BlueBelle123 · 25/08/2018 13:52

@twinplusone really sorry if I missed your earlier post but how did your DD do? Your posts always strike a cord with me as we have very similar DD's albeit mine is a few years older......hope everything is ok

Cblue isn't it a woman's prerogative to change her mine Grin

LooseAtTheSeams · 25/08/2018 14:09

I suspect DS if reading this thread - he's suddenly decided on maths, English, philosophy and psychology!Grin

BlueBelle123 · 25/08/2018 14:10

Ellen your right he doesn't have a choice, I blame DH as we moved here due to his job, so its all his fault obviously Grin

LarLar that's a great history result!
