Nearly everyone received a prize but my daughter-disappointed mum

Nearly everyone received prize but my daughter-disappointed mum at prize giving today. My d is at an academic school - her choice and in year 10. She does struggle and everyone around her and me seems to have a clever kid with numerous extra curricular activities going on. My daughter can barely keep up with homework- she is a slow person but conscientious.

She has never been To prize giving and this year they were fairly generous with the amount of certs they gave out, even girls who were less academic than mine revived prizes? She is currently at a grade 5 In all her subjects but competing with very academic girls. We just feel odd ones out as in four years nearly everyone has been given a prize apart from her? I Just feel is my kid the only dumb one in school? I also have work colleagues with gifted children and I feel complete opposite? Why is my child so different? I feel disappointed that I didn’t place her in a non competitive state school.

I think she sounds like she is doing ok and will leave school with decent qualifications. Stop trying to label her because she is not achieving the same level as some of her peers .Too much pressure an cause mental issues later .

ROZ12 · 08/07/2018 08:43

Retesting of exams she just did, to clarify I’m happy with 5S school is highly academic and they are not happy, I know how hard cie is and I know how my dd worked.

From level 5 in Ks2 Sats, expected progress would equate to a B or 6 at the end of year 11. Higher than that would be above expected progress.

She's on track to do exactly as her Sats would suggest.

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2018 08:58

"school is highly academic and they are not happy"

So what, exactly, have they said?

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2018 09:01

And can somebody clarify- is CIE really harder than other GCSEs? If so, what's that about?

ScipioAfricanus · 08/07/2018 09:04

Bertrand - yes, in my experience, but I only know about the old style GCSE (and only for sure in english lit and Lang). I would not be surprised if they were a lot more similar now that GCSE has been redesigned.

Jorah · 08/07/2018 09:06

Is CIE the IGCSE? Not harder in English, supposedly a bit harder in maths.

Dd's school have dropped it.

ScipioAfricanus · 08/07/2018 09:09

Yes Jorah. I used to teach the IGCSE English Lit and Lang CIE and it was more demanding than Edexcel. That was why the school I was in did it - they didn’t rate the old style GCSE and did CIE in most subjects.

Runninglateeveryday · 08/07/2018 09:14

Your kind of back tracking now, you called her dumb initially.

5s are good for year 10 so why does she need testing? She might just not be really academic .

My DD got 1 for maths and English she has learning needs and did her best I would never dream of being a "disappointed mum" or calling her dumb, it's disgusting behaviour from you.

Jorah · 08/07/2018 09:22

Are you saying school are not happy because they didn't give her a prize?

gekiort · 08/07/2018 09:22

she’s fine. You aren’t

THIS.

Go read your OP again. You are having a whinge because your daughter didn't get a prize. It's all about you, you and no one else. There is zero concern for your daughter in the OP. You had no concerns about her possibly having any SEN until someone else suggested it.

As a parent it is your job to brush shit like that away not like pressure on and act like a spoiled 5yo. If you genuinely had any SEN concerns, why have you not raised them before now? Why has school not?

You need to realise this is about your daughter, not about you. Your OP is one of the most self absorbed I have seen yet.

Ginorchoc · 08/07/2018 09:30

I feel so sad with regard to how you talk about your daughter. Be proud, take her out for a end of year meal to celebrate her achievements and work ethic.

ROZ12 · 08/07/2018 09:37

Never called her dumb, not as clever as peers due to results. Never said it to her directly, never thought she had sen so thank you pointing it out as at least then I’ll know the cause and if not we will deal with it. We went out last night cinema and meal to celebrate!!! Thorpe Park next week!!

Cie science!

They have suggested a Retest as exams were 5 not dissapointed she didn’t get a prize. Despite all your comments I merely wanted her to get a prize to boost her confidence not mine, I took her out to celebrate.

OP posts:
Ginorchoc · 08/07/2018 09:57

Are they retesting all those who achieved around 5, it seems a lot of pressure on them?

ROZ12 · 08/07/2018 10:02

They all got caller after assembly, as one mum said her dd got 6, 7, and 8s and she would be dissapointed with 5s at a selective school.

Has anyone else’s child got 5 end of year ten?

OP posts:
LIZS · 08/07/2018 10:02

You used "dumb" in your op. Hmm What is the purpose of the retest? Unless she is tutored over the summer she is unlikely to improve by then. Did her report suggest specific areas to work on? Iirc you have had misgivings about her being in a selective school since before she started.

Runninglateeveryday · 08/07/2018 10:02

You did call her dumb re read what you put

Ginorchoc · 08/07/2018 10:07

My daughter is in a selective school and in year 9 so not there yet but they have their own testing system until she goes into year 10. She is 5&6s for the end of year but got a 1 in one subject. Bit of a shock but it was down to her completely messing up the exam (PE) but her overall work for the year is a 6 so it’s just a blip. She isn’t the highest or the lowest just cruising along. Work ethic is most important at this stage until year 11 in my opinion but not all parents probably agree.

ROZ12 · 08/07/2018 10:08

She will have more time in summer and I am looking for tutors to help her as well.

Ds is year 10 state comprehensive which has some extremely gifted children. He is doing well getting 6,7,8s in recent end of term mocks. Some of his peers are getting 3s and below. The difference is the teachers are encouraging and have been telling them they will improve.

ROZ12 · 08/07/2018 10:20

I’m
Pleased for all of your children but everyone seems to be saying their child st end of year ten achieved 6,7 and 8s. This is why I feel the way I do and the school is not happy as mine should also be getting the same. This is why I’m feeling my child as I wrongly/regret put it ‘dumb’.

OP posts:
Scabetty · 08/07/2018 10:22

Most children aren’t getting these grades. But your child is in a selective school. Some children would kill for 5s in ds’s school.

ROZ12 · 08/07/2018 10:25

so for s selective it’s not good scores, which I already knew. She just has to work harder.

OP posts:
Scabetty · 08/07/2018 10:26

Personally I would be looking for another school for 6th form.
