Child not clever enough for grammar school- what do you do?

Not my situation, but something that cropped up in a conversation with a friend who lives in Kent.

A child who is averagely clever and without intensive tutoring is unlikely to pass the 11+. Many/all of friends at school are doing going to sit 11+.

What do you do? Tell your child they are not clever enough for grammar school or let them sit the test knowing that they will fail?

Exactly my point. I know of boys in my sons year and others at other schools who are nowhere near as bright academically - I've known them since they were quite young - who got into super selective grammars over him and it is frustrating. We have praised him lots even though he missed the grade by 0.7 - yes that little - and explain that he got down to the last 800 or so from around 4000 I think. We gave him a well done and working hard present (new bike) and then just concentrated on the next lot of private school exams.
It's all so tough on them.
