Anyone going for a GSCE or A level re-mark/clerical check 2017?

Ds2 did one GSCE this year - they take RE a year early. To his surprise and delight he received a B when he was expecting a pass. To our further surprise he was one UMS mark off an A, which is only half a raw mark (I think - may have got it the wrong way round). So we went for a remark, at his request. He said he would almost relieved if he went down a few marks and didn't feel he had missed out on a A by a hairsbreadth. Ds2 has ASD and terrible at writing - he has a scribe so that's why it is so amazing he has turned out to be good at dictating his thoughts.

I went through this with two GSCEs last year with my year 11 and there was only a tiny change in one of his remarked papers (and the bad grades didn't change), so I am really not expecting anything, but just in case there is anyone out there waiting for an remark. Ds2 is Edexcel....

We're waiting for a remark for maths. He got a B but a mark or two away from an A.

Not sure how the process works or when he'll hear back

knittingwithnettles · 27/08/2017 22:42

Exams officer said that whereas AQA had to physically locate the papers in a warehouse and post them to the examiner, Edexcel had everything downloaded on computer so was able to process the remarks very fast indeed. In fact he suggested that we wait to see how the other remarks went for a week (there being other students who would urgently request remarks on the C/D boundary) before we made a decision and spent the money - as it was so fast it wouldn't inconvenience us much to wait a week; however we were very impatient!

DD1 is getting RE and History remarked - she was 1 mark off an A in both The school made the decision and are paying for it, bless them.

knittingwithnettles · 28/08/2017 18:17

is that Edexcel Pointy?

I am actually not sure, knitting.

errorofjudgement · 28/08/2017 20:30

After speaking to the exams officer, DD id 1 mark off the next level for English Lit so we have requested a re-mark.
Prior to this year this would mean a senior examiner remarking the paper, but with the changes, I'm not sure it will get that far, so I'm not optimistic for a better outcome.

knittingwithnettles · 28/08/2017 21:52

ds1 was 3 marks off a B in Eng Lit last year; we had it remarked and not a single point changed up or down Hmm It was a pity though... I'm not optimistic now either, but just interested..

We are going for remark for English language edexcel although it is apparently now a review and not actually remarked from what I was told but the exam officer himself has not had this fully explained by the board. Not really sure what it means but had to pay for individual paper (2) and was told we could then also pay for paper 1 if necessary. That's a lot of money but really hoping to make 4 marks for next grade. The English grades are down for his year. To be honest I think the English exams marking has been cocked up.

Cafeconleche · 29/08/2017 12:43

robin it was my understanding that this year Edexcel has posted all the exams online, so that your DC's English teacher could look at the script before requesting a review. This is not the case for the other boards - though I may have got this wrong....

robin64 · 29/08/2017 12:55

Thanks cafe I am a bit peeved the exam officer didn't tell me that. Would make sense to at least look first before coughing up the £42 I had to pay.

robin64 · 29/08/2017 12:56

So can anyone access them or just the school?

robin64 · 29/08/2017 12:58

Actually I'm guessing just the school would make more sense. Maybe they are thinking of doing that when term starts?

Cafeconleche · 29/08/2017 14:05

I think it's just the school robin, but one of the MN teachers on here will know. My DS did 2 Edexcel subjects and the school's not back until next week, but I'm in tomorrow for a meeting and am going to ask for his teachers to look at the papers before I decide whether or not to go for a remark. AQA has nothing on line, so you have to go for a review armed only with raw/UMS marks etc - and every finger crossed.

teta · 29/08/2017 14:11

We've done a remark for Biology a level ( Aqa).Dd went up from a B to an A.Also 2/5 Maths papers remarked went up two marks. She needs two more marks for an A So I reckon it's worth doing the other 3.Even if she gets an A it's too late for a place at vet school as they are full.
I would advise everyone to remark if they have any queries whatsoever.

Chapwithwings · 29/08/2017 14:20

We're going to ask for a review of our daughters' Art GCSE. It was marked as an A* but came back from moderation as an A. Ordinarily I would tell her that I'm still unbelievably proud of what she has achieved in this and all her subjects but Art is 'her' subject and she is understandably disappointed having had her hoped raised like this. I've told her that we will seek the review she wants but that she shouldn't dwell on it.

Never thought we'd be suffering from 'pushy child' rather than 'pushy parent' syndrome :-)

robin64 · 29/08/2017 14:55

teta that is interesting and well done for following up. What a shame about vet school application though. Could I ask whether GCSE results were a factor for vet med please as DS is considering that, hence the review - his results were really good and he will be doing maths/sciences for A level. I just thought that eng lang might be a gcse that could be looked at by uni? Is your DD going to try again next year?

robin64 · 29/08/2017 14:58

chapwithwings - no harm in reviewing but don't worry too much if she wants to do art then a great portfolio and art btec (or A levels)will surpass gcse art if she wants to take it further.

robin64 · 29/08/2017 15:01

thanks Cafe, good luck with your meeting. I saw the exams officer day after results but he didn't mention access to the papers, he just had the breakdown for each paper which wasn't on the results sheet.

Decorhate · 29/08/2017 15:58

Chapwithwings - I've been told today that it's not possible to get an individual review of marking in Art. Only if the school had concerns about all the results & got the whole cohort reviewed.

Son v disappointed as one mark off a higher grade. Teacher said she had assessed his portfolio & exam as at the higher grade but was marked down by the moderator.

Chapwithwings · 29/08/2017 16:45

Robin64 & Decorhate

Thanks for the feedback. Personally, that's my thought with regard to the A-Level Art which she will be doing. I'll let you know if we get a different answer with regard to an individual review. I'd just want her to know that we tried at least. At the moment it feels like the authorities just want to demoralise the kids at every turn (I'm being over dramatic!!)

Majaso12 · 29/08/2017 20:09

How many marks did your dd go up in biology Teta. My ds needs 7 marks for an A (OCR) but we're worried he could go down 16 marks to a C. We're hoping a teacher will look over his paper when school starts back and then we can make a decision. He needs 13 ums (8 raw marks) for an A in maths, but I don't think there's much chance of that going up. He was predicted A for both and has done worse this year than he did in AS which is upsetting.

teta · 30/08/2017 07:43

Majaso12 Dd needed 2 marks and went up three for Biology. We've had 2/5 Maths papers remarked and have gone up 2 points. We need another two points so it's worth remarking the others. As otherwise Dd will have to repeat one of the modules. She needs an A or A* for her course.

ifonly4 · 30/08/2017 07:45

DD is one mark off in French. The school have asked for many of the papers to be checked as they have a high number off their predicted grade and they don't agree with the marks for, I think speaking.

The school spoke to DD about this, so no idea how long it'll take. Luckily it's not one she needs for A level.

Majaso12 · 30/08/2017 09:27

Teta were the 3 marks increase on 1 biology paper or 2/3? I think if we get ds' remarked, we're not going to be able to have it done now until after 5 Sept when school starts back, Exam Officer isn't answering emails anyway. We wanted to try 1 paper first and if that comes back with more marks, try another paper, but don't know if there's time for that now.
