Anyone going for a GSCE or A level re-mark/clerical check 2017?

Ds2 did one GSCE this year - they take RE a year early. To his surprise and delight he received a B when he was expecting a pass. To our further surprise he was one UMS mark off an A, which is only half a raw mark (I think - may have got it the wrong way round). So we went for a remark, at his request. He said he would almost relieved if he went down a few marks and didn't feel he had missed out on a A by a hairsbreadth. Ds2 has ASD and terrible at writing - he has a scribe so that's why it is so amazing he has turned out to be good at dictating his thoughts.

I went through this with two GSCEs last year with my year 11 and there was only a tiny change in one of his remarked papers (and the bad grades didn't change), so I am really not expecting anything, but just in case there is anyone out there waiting for an remark. Ds2 is Edexcel....

Hugo what subject was that? That's made me feel nervous about my ds' biology. Advice from biology teacher after looking at his papers was to put all 3 papers in for a remark, but if it goes down 16 marks, it will go down a grade and he'll lose his university place. We're having 1 paper put in today hopefully, was then hoping to put other 2 in, 1 at a time. I called OCR yesterday and they said remarks take 20 days so it looks like we'll only have time to get 1 paper remarked now.

Hugo that sounds really stressful. We were warned by the school that marks can go down as well as up.But in our case it's been well worth it if only to restore dd's confidence. She was so stunned by her results she actually looked concussed.

justmeand2DC · 07/09/2017 23:44

If the school gets the Edexcel scripts and can check any unexpected grades does this mean that we shouldn't get the marks reviewed if they haven't suggested it?

My situation is DS1 worked exceedingly hard on his Maths and Physics revision, his predictions were B for physics and A for maths throughout the year. He felt after the exams and in discussions with his friends that the (AQA) Physics and most of the (Edexcel) maths modules had gone extremely well. He was vindicated for the Physics with an A at AS and predicted A for A-level, with a mark of 107 where the boundary for A prediction was around 95.

HOWEVER his maths grade is way way down and his confidence has been shattered. He was intending to do Further Maths so did 8 maths modules in Y12 and has already got his A-level BUT both A-level and AS are only a high C. All his friends who apparently had the same answers as him in their post-exam discussions have A or A*. Even the modules he thought would have been near full marks like C1 and M1 he has only a B and some of the core maths are D or E!! He was absolutely distraught on results day and can only think it's because he showed insufficient working but I don't understand how that wouldn't have shown up as an issue before?

The school have said if he drops the plan of doing Further Maths and re-does the second half of the Maths syllabus with those doing it over 2 years they will predict him an A as he has been an A student consistently. However they won't advise on remarks although they said that his predicted grade won't change regardless of the result.

He is only 1 mark off a B for AS maths and a few off a B for A-level maths. He wants to get the majority of his maths modules remarked. On the one hand it seems unlikely that so many of the papers could have been marked wrongly but on the other hand if he gets one more mark he will get a B for AS maths on his UCAS form whereas he has to lose about 30 marks to lose his C. But I am worrying that as the board is Edexcel, the school will have access to the scripts and wouldn't they have checked such an unexpected mark themselves?

Thanks for any thoughts if you managed to get through this!

DDs re-mark has come back.
New style Eng Lit GCSE and its gone up 2 grades!
Hoping others are also having success.

Laniakea · 11/09/2017 20:51

error that's brilliant!

I know of a few remarks amongst dd's friends & they've all gone up. I regret not getting dd's biology done now :/

errorofjudgement · 11/09/2017 20:54

There's still time I think?
We are pretty damn pleased, this gives her a level 9 Grin

errorofjudgement · 11/09/2017 20:54

And thank you xx

Laniakea · 11/09/2017 21:22

brilliant!

It's an AQA science paper so more likely to be marked well than the new 9-1 )I think ??). DD wasn't desperate to do it (got an A we all really expected an A*) - think she's a bit embarrassed - & school weren't med keen either. In the end we settled for getting the paper back to go through with her biol teacher as a learning exercise which means we can't get the remark.

It probably was just her having a bad day, but of all of her subjects it was the one I really didn't expect her to drop a grade on.

errorofjudgement · 11/09/2017 21:45

The remark was important to DD as she's taking Eng Lit at A level so this increases her confidence starting sixth form.
I thing going through the Biology exam is an excellent idea. Is it one of your DDs A level choices?

Rosieposy4 · 11/09/2017 22:10

We have had virtually no success as a school with remarks this year, ds4's Eng Lang did not go up on remark either.

Teddygirlonce · 12/09/2017 08:24

@Rosieposy4, out of interest what board is that - AQA or another?

Laniakea · 12/09/2017 08:35

yes she doing it for A level :) The teachers weren't really worried by it, she got close to full or full UMS in all the other science papers but scrapped a B in this one, but it is strange!

Majaso12 · 12/09/2017 09:30

Edexcel c3 didn't change at all in the remark. Not sure whether to try another maths paper.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/09/2017 09:32

Ds1 is getting one geography paper remarked

He got B for three papers and U for one

Which just seems weird

anothernextsale · 12/09/2017 09:43

Edexel Eng Lit & Lang here - both surprise grades (a 3, expecting a comfy 5 tbh!!) .

Chased the school up again for exam marks and grade boundaries - they have told me they can't access the papers online as it is now too late but will let me know the marks ..... (I've chased 3 times already) but may not be able to give them to me without permission from the actual child! Awaiting a return call
any help please as I can only go on what they are saying but no idea if they are right or not.

Cafeconleche · 12/09/2017 10:05

The school are wrong anothernextsale. Edexcel scripts are available to view on line (with permission of the student) until the end of September, although requests for reviews have to be in my 21st September (I think - check the date with your exams officer). Don't let them off the hook!

anothernextsale · 12/09/2017 12:59

Thank you Cafe - awaiting return of said child from college today and will get a letter signed to give permission.

Majaso12 · 12/09/2017 14:54

Biology remark has come back with overall grade the same, but no breakdown of marks. Don't know if the 1 paper we had remarked has gone up or down at all, which we need to know before deciding whether to have other 2 papers remarked. Got to try and find out the mark for that paper now.

LIZS · 13/09/2017 07:35

No change here. Suggested to dd she asks her hod for the breakdown by question as she is adamant she answered both questions ok, if found one perhaps more tricky.

SoupDragon · 13/09/2017 07:49

DS1 missed out on his chosen uni by 1 mark and having that subject re-marked (3 papers!) resulted in no change. I'm gutted for him.

LIZS · 13/09/2017 08:17

Sadsoup, that is hard. Is it worth a resit or does he have place elsewhere now?

Majaso12 · 13/09/2017 09:06

What subject is that Soup? Ds' biology paper came back as stet - no change. Was sure there were 2 marks to be gained as well. Now trying to decide whether to get the other 2 papers remarked and which one first.

SoupDragon · 13/09/2017 09:25

Economics.

He has his insurance place but has now announced it's not a good enough university and he doesn't want to go there. He starts next week!

I'm so upset for him and have no idea what he should do now.

DS2 has sent a geography gcse off to see if he can get the extra mark to give him an A*. I am going to be so pissed off if he gets it because it will make zero difference to him.

SoupDragon · 13/09/2017 09:26

DS1's is the difference between an A and an A* too.

ifonly4 · 13/09/2017 10:50

Are the remarks getting done before the checks? DD's school were having the spoken section of French checked as they disagreed with the marks given in the majority of cases, but we haven't heard either way.
