We paid the deposit for the accommodation today. It is all becoming very real.
Ds has joined the Facebook page for his accommodation, he says that he will lurk until he feels confident enough to join in.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/08/2017 22:05

Horse - fraid not - they did get a basket for it but disappointingly metal not wicker.Grin

ono40 · 18/08/2017 22:11

Sidney, a week into Leeds with the fantastic social life and your DS will wonder why he even put Durham in the first place. He will love it.

Horse, where is your DS going? He's doing History as well isn't he?

DS had a lovely email from his History teacher today saying he got the second highest mark in the school and some other lovely things, brought a tear to my eye.

When DS finally surfaced at about 2pm following a night of clubbing, he suddenly remembered that he needed to do things urgently before he goes off interrailing for 3 weeks, namely registering with the uni! So things like shopping for bedding etc will be left to me.

Horsemad · 18/08/2017 22:21

Newcastle ono40, yes he's doing History Smile

bathildabagshot1 · 18/08/2017 23:41

Well, I was right, she didn't hit her AAB offer, but got ABB so was accepted to her first choice of York anyway albeit on a slightly different course.

Big relief here, much relief, one very happy set of parents, well except when she vommed all over the bathroom at 3 am on Thursday night and cried like a toddler for her mum.

I'll let her have that though, just this once.

Sidney · 19/08/2017 07:04

Thank you, everyone, for making me feel better about Leeds!
I guess my worry now is that Leeds start a week earlier, which means my dh can't drive him up (longstanding commitment to be away with an old friend). We live in Taunton, and I actually feel a bit scared about undertaking the drive on my own. It's ages since I have driven in our family car on the motorway. Ho hum.

MirabelleTree · 19/08/2017 07:08

I get that Sidney. Would it help if you do a day out in Exeter or somewhere to practice a bit before you go and could a friend come with you? I think it would be nice to have someone with you for the return journey.

Horsemad · 19/08/2017 08:03

If you can get someone to go with you you'll have some company for the return journey Sidney.

bigTillyMint · 19/08/2017 08:39

This is moving fast!

Can't believe so many have their accommodation sorted already - apparently DD's is announced on Wednesday.

Sidney, Leeds is a trek from Taunton, but mostly motorway? I agree, can you take someone with you for the return trip?

When do they all start? DD is in 4 weeksShock

user9512736123 · 19/08/2017 08:54

Wednesday here as well, then we have to book the moving in slot then really get organised. I'm trying to sort out uni plus a younger sibling moving schools and I start a new job, going to be fun!

We've been told accommodation will be allocated next week sometime.

DD starts on 20th September

bathildabagshot1 · 19/08/2017 09:46

Why would you feel bad about Leeds?

Its Russell Group.

bigTillyMint · 19/08/2017 09:49

Leeds is a great city and a great uni - we know a few going there.
I guess its the not getting into the firm choice that is disorientating.

Horsemad · 19/08/2017 09:55

Can anyone personally recommend a nice LED desk lamp please?
So much choice!

LittleHo · 19/08/2017 10:20

dd doesn't go until the end of September which is great as my other two dd's have to be dropped off during September. Three separate weekends for the three girls thank heavens!

It will also give me time to replace some of her grungy clothes.

FreedaDonkey · 19/08/2017 12:18

I've posted this on another thread so apologies if some of you have seen it already , but lots of the highly rated unis (Nottingham and other RGs) are advertising all over Facebook this morning that they still have clearing places.

Will they be willing to drop their offers? Would be v interesting to know.

user9512736123 · 19/08/2017 12:32

I don't know which paper it was in, probably The Telegraph but my father said that they had lists with the number of vacancies the other day! That's very specific info, I wish I'd seen it as it'd have been interesting.

A cursory glance at the UCAS clearing is showing several RG Universities with various vacancies - one that surprised me was Cardiff for psychology.

Accommodation already sorted here as DS's insurance was the 4 year version of his first choice so he knows which halls and which flat and even which room he's in. A Facebook group has been started for the flat specifically and the halls generally and he's slowly finding more people getting added to it. So at least he'll feel like he knows them before he moves in. Fingers crossed still for everyone else

Decorhate · 19/08/2017 13:24

Sidney 2 years ago my dd missed her firm & went to Leeds. At the time she was gutted to miss her firm by something like 0.5% but loved Leeds immediately. I don't think she has ever had any regrets & the bigger city probably suits her better.

How difficult/expensive wouid it be to go by train? If it was feasible could your ds take the basics that way & you go up a couple of weeks later with the rest of his stuff?

stonecircle · 19/08/2017 13:26

Still waiting for accommodation from Southampton here. Their website just says they allocate from mid Aug - early Sept. early days yet I know, but surprised so many on here are already sorted with accommodation. We had a long long wait to hear from Exeter a couple of years ago for ds2. Application was in on time, and it was his firm but they went beyond their stated deadline and then it wasn't really what he wanted.

All adds to the stress!

BehindTheBlueDoor · 19/08/2017 13:53

I've just been relieved of a £200 deposit for accommodation but DS got his first choice and is v happy. He's sharing a purpose built house with 11 others, good size study/bedroom, shared kitchen and living area. He has a 43 week contract too so we don't have to clear his room at Christmas and Easter. He can cook so won't starve but it'll be a learning curve juggling cooking, laundry etc alongside socialising and studying of course Wink

ono40 · 19/08/2017 17:34

Quick poll. If you were off interrailing tomorrow at 6am for three weeks would you now be:

  1. Packing OR
  2. Registering with your chosen uni OR
  3. Playing on the PS4

I'll let you decide which one DS is doing....Wink

bathildabagshot1 · 19/08/2017 17:36

haha.

If he's off interaling he'd best get used to being organised, or stuff gets lost.

Mellifera · 20/08/2017 11:15

ono
My DD is off interrailing tomorrow at 5am, and has she finished planning her trip?
No, she's sleeping 😎

Horsemad · 20/08/2017 11:38

I quite fancy interesting, how does it work - do you buy a 'rover' ticket or just purchase each stage as you decide where to go?
