Hope Track updates soon for you both Liney and Etaina.

Quiet day for us today I think Smile

Horsemad · 18/08/2017 09:33

Ha! I read a tip that said give them your old stuff and buy new for yourself.

Wish I'd done that for DS1 - spent lots kitting him out and he brought back barely anything at the end of his first year Shock

bigTillyMint · 18/08/2017 09:39

Horse, I was planning on giving DD the old stuff but then I thought maybe that was mean Grin

bigTillyMint · 18/08/2017 09:40

Can we start making lists on here?!

Auntpetunia2015 · 18/08/2017 09:40

That's sort of what I'm doing with stuff for DS. hes chipped and bashed so much of my stuff that me and dd are gonna choose new which will also go to our new flat when we move and he can have the old. But he's not getting my nice ceramic pans. Old towels -he's had his own for years as he as is a bugger for leaving them in a damp heap so the smell, well as only he uses them I've left him to it. Old mugs and mismatched cutlery. Cheap pans from home & bargain. Did buy some new bedding yesterday as he'll need single bed stuff and not the double he's been used to and he reused DDs pink sheets for some reason Grin

I sense a trip to IKEA coming on.

Should we do a list of everything we/they think they need?

user9512736123 · 18/08/2017 09:43

I saw a thing where you can order a kitchen pack, bedroom pack and so on to be delivered direct to their accommodation ready for when they arrive. The price looks reasonable so we are doing that as I have a tiny car and will have four people in it with my two plus a boyfriend. We won't get the accommodation allocation until next week so we are in limbo now.

Oh and the uni have a list of what you need to bring so we are following that. Thankfully it's less than an hour by car for forgotten stuff!

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 18/08/2017 09:47

How much of everything?
2 sets bedding?
2 or 3 towels?
Crockery/cutlery?

If everyone in a shared flat brings loads, or not enough... Grin

bigTillyMint · 18/08/2017 09:48

Must get DD to look carefully at uni tips!

HSMMaCM · 18/08/2017 09:48

There's a good thread here

What to take/remember for Uni?

Auntpetunia2015 · 18/08/2017 09:48

Ooh can I have a link for the packs please user. More so I don't forget anything than to actually order. I'm borrowing my partners huge car to transport DS mainly coz he's 6ft 2 and his stuff plus me him and DD would be a huge squeeze in my tiny Fiat !

Sidney · 18/08/2017 09:49

Has anyone had any luck getting a reversal of a decision from Durham?
My ds was made an offer of 3As, but got A, A, B. The A was in the subject he wants to study. He has rung, but didn't make it through to anyone beyond the general admissions office.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/08/2017 09:52

I've still got my mothers 70s era orange plastic jug she gave me when I first moved into a student flat. It's only used for dog-washing now but still, it's an heirloom Grin.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 18/08/2017 09:59

Uni accommodation pages usually have a link to a list of what is needed in each type of accommodation. Silly thing but fitted sheets can be an issue as some beds are longer than standard-we feed our kids too well!- so IKEA Euro size fitted sheets or flat sheets are recommended. Distinctive cutlery seems to be a thing too if you want to eat from your own. I'm going to need a bigger storage cupboard....

HSMMaCM · 18/08/2017 10:02

Sidney - no idea, but tell him to keep phoning.

Horsemad · 18/08/2017 10:03

A lot of uni accommodation kitchens have induction jobs so make sure the pans will work on those!

Horsemad · 18/08/2017 10:03

Lol, induction HOBS Grin

Student room packs www.studentroompacks.co.uk/default

I don't know if they do all universities. They are based in Bristol, I couldn't find a list on their website though. The bed linen pack is expensive so I'm going to order that and click and collect from the local Argos but other stuff is ok.

My top tip is to only send them with 2 plates, bowls, cups, glasses, cutlery etc (as everyone has their own) and it then forces them to wash them up quite quickly. Also they quite often don't make it home each term/year. therefore if you have bought a cheap set of 4 or 6 or 8 then you have replacements to send them back with.

My DS preferred to have a double duvet still even though it was a single bed as it meant he got fully covered and a single duvet left him feeling chilly in winter Grin

I did send him with 24 loo rolls the first time and whenI visited in November I asked if he needed anything he said loo rolls! I think he had covered the loo rolls for all 7 of them in his halls!

Cereals that can be eaten without milk (such as cheerios) are a good thing for "food parcels" as milk often runs out/gets nicked/goes off!

Allthebestnamesareused · 18/08/2017 10:07

Also definitely buy new for you and send them with old things if you have a DS as they don't care about matching stuff.

Horsemad · 18/08/2017 10:11

If you type in University Checklist in the top search bar (I'm on my phone & can't link) on here there is a very useful MN list that I used when DS1 went.

Sidney · 18/08/2017 10:21

Thank you HSMMaCM. Anyone on here an admissions officer? If they say the course is full, I guess we have to accept that. If he keeps ringing up and asking, surely they would just get really irritated?

bigTillyMint · 18/08/2017 10:23

Errol, I still have a couple of Pyrex dishes like that Grin

thesandwich · 18/08/2017 10:26

Congratulations to all. Deep breath!
Our tip tip- vacuum storage bags to take bedding/ towels/ clothes in. Helps reduce the mountains of stuff!!

bigTillyMint · 18/08/2017 10:30

I have found the checklist and printed it off. Will add on top tips from here Grin
