New thread as the old one is at 990 messages!

OP posts:
JugglingFromHereToThere · 05/09/2017 10:24

Awww, nice poem HSM
I'll miss all you folks too when we don't have another thread to start! Thanks so much for being there and holding my hand through the whole adventure
from GCSE's or maybe earlier!

Anyway, for now will be good to hear from you all about move-in day. Hope everyone has a good one!
We have a really long drive to Swansea, but as I mentioned we're staying over so it should be OK.

And of course lots of love too to everyone going different ways such as really grown up world of work, or having another shot at it all next year.
Wishing you resilience and strength and good courage. And all the very best of luck 😘

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2017 12:33

Won't we be having threads continuing throughout uni and beyond?ShockGrin

HSMMaCM · 05/09/2017 12:58

Errol I'm sure we will. Phone calls home to ask silly questions about things we thought they already knew - i.e. How to boil an egg Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2017 13:11

I'm sure DD doesn't know how long to boil an egg for, but then again, she doesn't like them.

She is currently - of her own volition- doing a keep/charity/bin sweep of her clothes!Shock

tobee · 05/09/2017 13:21

Empty Nest thread 2017???Smile

HSMMaCM · 05/09/2017 13:51

Yes tobee.

I am just imagining the call the first night :

DD- my phone's not charging
Me- have you switched the socket on?
DD- ummmmm

Hi, waving to you Juggling! Yes they do need to go through an on-line enrollment process and book a slot to pick up keys. We also are quite far from Swansea, so we are leaving early Friday morning and spending Friday and Saturday night there. The only time we've been is when DS went for an offer holder's visit so it will be a chance for us to get to know the area.
DS whose cooking skills so far stretch to fajitas (with a kit) and spag bol has said that it's easy to cook all meat, you just season and shove it in the oven. Maybe he will be eating Sunday roast all week!

tobee · 05/09/2017 14:31

Just remembered dd's first call, 4 years ago, after drop off. Dh and I taking the opportunity to wander round lovely NT property, like proper, civilised adults. She couldn't get her Internet going. It was the end of the world!.She'd definitely tried everything!!! I think she hadn't used quite the right password. Got glared at by genteel NT volunteers as they had a no mobiles policy, while I tried to use my superpowers to solve the mystery, skulking in the corridor, outside some duchess's boudoir. Grin

Horsemad · 05/09/2017 21:25

Oh I do hope we carry on 'conversing', it has been so good going through this with others and would be nice to carry on sharing our experiences Smile

indulgentberries · 05/09/2017 22:07

It's a shame it's on a public forum

bebumba · 06/09/2017 08:05

Ds should be ok with cooking. He often cooks when I am at work. Not out of kindness I hasten to add but because he is too hungry to wait for me to get home and cook!
The washing machine however is a different matter!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/09/2017 10:13

Ahh, that would be nice if we can have a Starting Uni/ Empty nest/ Post Year 13 thread for everyone.
We won't actually be Empty Nesters here as we still have DS15, who headed off on his bike this morning for first day back in Y11 - think he's definitely grown in the holidays. Looked especially smart in new shirt and trousers which we bought yesterday.
But we will be three instead of two which will feel like a big change I'm sure. Until Christmas!
Also wondering if we might visit DD for a couple of days at half-term as it will be quite difficult for her to get back for a weekend during term, unless she can get away early on a Friday afternoon. Will have to see how the timetable looks. She thought that was a nice idea depending how homesick she feels - she thought she may want to come and see us instead. Generally though she's in good spirits about it all and looking forward to it.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/09/2017 10:14

Instead of four I meant, lost my train of thought there I think!

teta · 06/09/2017 13:46

I would still love to keep in touch and hear how everyone is doing. Its fun hearing about all the preparations for uni.I have been doing much the same for my Ds who is starting boarding school today.I never realised how much 'stuff' he would need!
Good news today Dd was marked up to another A - by 8 marks in Maths.I'm pretty certain she would have got in with that as her Surrey offer was 2 A and a B .And I'm trying to be happy for her and trying not to rage at the unfairness of life.
Now time to take Ds on his boarding school adventure.

tobee · 06/09/2017 14:08

Sounds like your dd could be sitting pretty on some nice offers next year teta.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/09/2017 14:37

That does sound encouraging for next year teta, especially if your DD is able to continue to build up valuable work experience in the coming year.
How is she doing? What sort of plans does she have?

Hope your DS settles well at boarding school and enjoys the new experience.

indulgentberries · 06/09/2017 14:44

Do they have an October or February half term? A lot of universities don't?

bigTillyMint · 06/09/2017 14:46

Teta that is so frustrating. But as tobee says, she will have all her ducks in a row ready for next year.

Thought it was just Nationwide being slow with student bank account. DD applied over 2 weeks ago and only yesterday got an email to take in ID so she made me go with her to show today and he said bank cards in 7-10 days - she goes in 10 days so cutting it fine Angry

She is currently fretting about having money to start term if student finance doesnt come through - any others planning for this?

tobee · 06/09/2017 14:53

indulgent sometimes they have reading week at half term time. (Maybe that should be reading week in inverted commas?Grin) At Exeter dd had some kind of team building/careers/personality events instead (that most people didn't sign up for) during those weeks.

My concern about the possibility of having to send on late arriving debit cards etc is that I have ds accommodation address but it's probably not his postal address which I don't yet know. Dd had awkward time with a replacement card arriving that needed to be signed for one time.

Needmoresleep · 06/09/2017 15:19

Teta, is it worth your DD writing a nice and careful email to Surrey admissions explaining this. Mainly setting the scene for a reapplication next year, but on the slight off-chance that they have had a couple of late drop outs. You never know. From the medicine thread and RL it seems that things were pretty fluid this year and late places have come up.

Majaso12 · 06/09/2017 17:54

Hope you don't mind me asking Teta but was that 8 raw marks or 8 ums in maths? My ds needs 8 raw marks and we've only just put 1 paper in for a remark as we're worried about putting more than 1 in at a time.

Horsemad · 06/09/2017 17:57

Teta, I agree with Needmoresleep about writing to the uni.

Brilliant news that her marks have gone up, btw. Smile

Needmoresleep · 06/09/2017 19:04

It need only be very short 'dear admissions officer, Following a remark I now have ...results. I was very disappointed to miss my offer at your university, and wondered first whether any last minute places had become available, and if so, whether you would be able to consider me.'

The answer will be yes or no. Probably no. But why not ask.

teta · 07/09/2017 08:26

Majaso it was 8 raw marks.Dd put in two papers initially and went up 3 marks and needed one more.So then she did the another two.Dd didn't do a remark for the one she had almost full marks on as she was worried it might go down.
Thank you for all of the advice.Needmoresleep Dd phoned up Surrey to be told that they are full and to reapply next year. She hasn't phoned Bristol yet but I suspect the answer will be the same. She is going to redo Chemistry as this was advised.Dd will have a fun year with lots of interesting work and a bit of Chemistry revision. She can go travelling with her friends as well.Juggling she is going to work at a wildlife sanctuary near us.They rehabilitate the animals and release them so that should be really interesting. The ones they can't they euthanise. She has a offer of work at a Vets and the RSPCA kennels. The plan is to do lots of volunteer work up to Christmas with maybe the odd Co op shift and then look for a paid job.She has a tutor twice a week for Chemistry already organised.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2017 10:02

Sounds like a great plan!

Mine has just passed her driving test second time so we're celebrating with a pain au chocolatGrin
