New thread as the old one is at 990 messages!

They all have very sensitive alarm systems and remember that smoking is not allowed in the flats and nor are candles which are the two biggest risk factors.

Horsemad · 01/09/2017 17:07

Checked with DS's halls and their cladding is being replaced, so obviously ISN'T up to standard at the moment. ShockShockShock

New build as well, opened last September!

tobee · 01/09/2017 21:12

Thing is, do I trust them not to smoke inside, light candles especially if alcohol has been consumed? They hopefully have got good fire alarms etc but this fire did happen. So...

bigTillyMint · 01/09/2017 21:29

DD said no fairy lights either!

indulgentberries · 01/09/2017 22:28

tobee Grenfell Tower was different though, the residents will have had a choice about smoke alarms and had a choice whether they smoked or lit candles.

I'd put money on the student halls, especially the managed ones, having smoke alarms which are very sensitive and which would be set off by smoking.

Haffdonga · 01/09/2017 22:54

Horsemad - a small tale to reassure you. As a family we went to the Edinburgh Festival and stayed in a fairly grotty uni hall of residence flat. DH decided on a breakfast fry up and set off the smoke alarm with mildly smoky bacon Blush . We soon discovered that the smoke alarm was not only linked up to the other alarms in our flat, not only linked up to the other flats in our block, not only linked to all the other blocks in the complex but also linked directly to the local fire brigade. Yes, we were responsible for several hundred bleary- eyed people standing in the carpark in their pyjamas beside a fire engine while the fire brigade checked out our bacon. When we were allowed back in five firemen were waiting in the flat for us to 'advise' us on fire safety. The bacon wasn't even overdone.

Sincere apologies to everyone we disturbed but really be reassured, the smoke alarms were most effective in that student flat. Blush Blush Blush

Haffdonga I have just woken DH up whilst trying to suppress my laughter at the image of your evacuation to the car park!!! Grin

How embarrassing - but as you say, reassuring too Smile

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 11:57

Sorry Haffdonga but Grin

tobee · 03/09/2017 01:39

Just remembered! Got my ds little great big enormous pile of stuff to take but thought "ooh yeah! He's going to be working as well. He'll need his backpack, lever arch files, pens etc!"

Auntpetunia2015 · 03/09/2017 11:35

Feeling a bit more organised bank account sorted , meningitis vac and flu jab sorted, car for moving his stuff sorted, list of things to get diminishing by the day, but did realise I'd forgotten actually school/college type things like pens and files..and paper. Oh well back off shopping I go

ErrolTheDragon · 03/09/2017 16:54

We did an Asda supermarket sweep today - DD wanted a navy sheet and a plain duvet cover (for her extra layer duvet to tone with the checked one) and google said they had these. So of course we trawled around for other random bits and bobs - kitchenware and coloured fine liners (she's very keen on them for revision notes).

tobee · 03/09/2017 18:14

So who's first off? Oxbridge will be last obviously...

HSMMaCM · 03/09/2017 18:30

I think some have already gone. 20th here for Bath Spa.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/09/2017 18:43

DD's college is having a couple of days before freshers for the engineers, but even so not till the 27th. Her pal went to Abertay a week ago.

LineysRun · 03/09/2017 18:44

2nd October for Reading but the freshers' thingy starts on the 18th September, and his halls tenancy from 15th.

(Getting that accommodation sorted was one of the most disagreeably stressful things I've ever been involved in.)

Oldie2017 · 03/09/2017 19:20

15th one twin. 16th the other.

olliepolly · 04/09/2017 07:16

10th for dd
Lots still to do this week

olliepolly · 04/09/2017 07:18

September that is .( 10/9/17 )
Such a rapid turn around after results day

bigTillyMint · 04/09/2017 07:34

Yes ollie!

16th for DD. She is making lists!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 04/09/2017 09:45

We're going on the 21st, ready for check in on Friday 22nd. Staying overnight the day before at a nice youth hostel by the sea (as it is too far really for a day trip)
And actually I've booked to stay somewhere else the night after though I may end up feeling at a bit of a loose end, but at least we won't have to rush move in day.
I think we need to book an arrivals slot with the Uni accommodation.

DD has also organised herself a trip to Slovenia next week, staying with her friend 😊

LineysRun · 04/09/2017 12:26

I suppose the arrival slots are to control the limited car parking spaces, unloading etc.

Just worked out in an idle moment that DS's hall of residence has an annual rental income of c £4,200,000. I'm in the wrong business.

Oldie2017 · 04/09/2017 12:44

One of mine is giong a day early (due to university field trip) and he has a very long easy slot as not many people will arrive that morning. Even so I am going to leave here quite early to get there early so he doesn't miss the coach to the trip away that afternoon. The second has a shorter slot the day after to allow for lots of arrivals. he says I must not be early under any circumstances. I am always early for things but we can just drive around locally until the slot time I'm sure. He needs to remember I have to drive all the way back that afternoon too. (They are not on my insurance for my main car so can't share driving with me and I do not want them arriving tired out from driving anyway).

HSMMaCM · 05/09/2017 04:21

Whether your child is going out to work or off to uni or wherever, I read this message about starting school and found it relevant all over again:

Dear Teacher
I know you're rather busy
First day back, there's just no time
A whole new class of little ones
And this one here is mine
I'm sure you have things covered
And have done this lots before
But my boy is very little
He hasn't long turned four
In his uniform this morning
He looked so tall and steady
But now beside your great big school
I’m not quite sure he’s ready
Do you help them eat their lunch?
Are you quick to soothe their fears?
And if he falls and hurts his knee
Will someone dry his tears?
And what if no-one plays with him?
What if someone’s mean?
What if two kids have a fight
And he’s caught in between?
You’re right, I have to leave now
It’s time for him to go
I’m sure he’ll learn so much from you
Things that I don’t know
Yes, I’m sure they settle quickly
That he’s fine now without me
I know he has to go to school
It’s just so fast, you see
It seems like just a blink ago
I first held him in my arms
It’s been my job to love, to teach
To keep him safe from harm
So, when I wave goodbye in a moment
And he turns to walk inside
Forgive me if I crumple
Into tears of loss and pride
I know as I give him one more kiss
And watch him walk away,
That he’ll never again be wholly mine
As he was before today.

Dear Parent,
I understand that you are scared
to wave your child goodbye
and leave him in a teacher’s hands
don’t worry if you cry!

I’m used to weeping parents
It’s hard to leave I know.
But it’s time to share him (just a bit)
To help him learn and grow.

Let me reassure you
That I’ll give your child my best
I’ll wipe his tears, soothe his fears
And change his dirty vest!

If your darling child is full of cold
I’ll blow their nose all day
Just like you, I’ll care for them
In a special way.

I’ll treat him like I would my own
I’ll catch him from a fall and
If there is ANY problem
I’ll be sure to tell you all.

It’s true he’ll grow to love us
They’ll talk of school a lot
It doesn’t mean they hate you
And that you should lose the plot!

I’ll tell you a secret..
That when your child is here
They talk to me as much of you
Of this please have no fear.

You’ll always be their mother
Whilst teachers come and go
To them you are their number one
This I truly know.

Soon you’ll see some changes
In your little girl or boy
They’ll become more independent
And to see this, it’s a joy!

I’ll teach them all I have to give
To share, climb and to write
But to you they safely will return
To tuck them in at night.

With love from a teacher…

Horsemad · 05/09/2017 07:04

Oh I am now a snotty sobbing mess after reading that, thanks HSMMaCM! Never seen that before.

indulgentberries · 05/09/2017 07:11

We aren't bothering with the allocated parking for arrivals, there isn't much stuff to unload and the halls is next door to a large car park so we've booked parking there - £10 so it's not breaking the bank and we can just carry it across the small road between them. We've still booked a slot though.
