She has told me she was sat at the table talking with her friends eating her lunch when she happened to let out a tiny belch. She thought nothing of it carried on talking to her friends when a teacher on a table by them then turned round and asked them which one of you burped . My daughter who is in year 7 said it was her the teacher then told her off and before she left to go outside with her friends handed her a detention for tomorrow lunchtime because she didant say excuse me . I am fuming right now and want to phone the school as this is ridiculous . Anyone got any advice ?

I'd ask for the bigger picture first.

Blinkyblink · 12/01/2017 14:27

I don't know, I'm sort of inclined to agree with the teacher actually.

Belching during lunch, Loud enough to be heard at another table during what was presumably a noisy setting. More I think about it, more I'm with the teacher.

Pootles2010 · 12/01/2017 14:27

A tiny belch wouldn't be heard on another table in the middle of a busy school dining hall.

VintagePerfumista · 12/01/2017 14:28

Good. How disgusting.

Wolfiefan · 12/01/2017 14:29

Stop fuming. Check the facts.
Should she be calling you from school anyway?

DriftingDreamer · 12/01/2017 14:29

On the face of it it sounds ridiculous. However, are you sure a tiny burp.
I used to pride myself at around that age of being able to do long extended burps and if I did that in front of a teacher I would have deserved to be in trouble!
Check facts. If mini belch sounds over zealous....
However, was there a big one and lots of tomfoolery afterwards?
You know your daughter though...

VintagePerfumista · 12/01/2017 14:29

Advice: teach her some table manners?

Silverdream · 12/01/2017 14:30

This is tricky. The reason being because you weren't there. Anything anyone tells us will be biased to themselves. As much as a parent thinks their child will say it totally as it happened they won't. It will be their version. It may be correct what she's told you or it may be altered slightly. If it was a very quiet blurb how did the teacher hear it over the noise of the canteen.
I'd leave it. It's school. Lesson learnt.

She is never in trouble at school and she has good manners we all burp sometimes

why is she ringing you from school with her petty grievances? She clearly expects you to go in all guns blazing for her. But why does she think that?

Rudeness at lunchtime, lunchtime detention deserved and given, why are you angry with the school? Why aren't you angry with your daughter?

What do you expect her educational outcomes are going to be like if she behaves so badly in year 7, and you seem to be prepared to back her up? What do you think her behaviour is going to be like in year 9, or year 10?

If you care anything about your daughters education, qualifications and future, back the school up

Leviticus · 12/01/2017 14:31

I think there will be more or a different slant to this than your DD is telling you.

user1484227404 · 12/01/2017 14:32

She phoned me as it was lunch

Check with the school first

Though she might get in more trouble for calling during school hours..

But if she did get a detention for just a burp I think it's OTT

It's wind. Better out than in

Floggingmolly · 12/01/2017 14:32

It wasn't "tiny" if it echoed round the room. I'd lay odds it didn't pass unremarked either; there'll have been plenty of shrieking and arsing about as well...

wifework · 12/01/2017 14:34

I think, it's a burp, she got detention, she should just suck it up. It may be that she let out a tiny and ladylike belch. But come on, she probably didn't.

I wish I had cared less about punishment at school - it would've made me a much less anxious adult I reckon!

user1484227404 · 12/01/2017 14:34

She hasn't had a detention yet so she is upset at being told off

AmeliaJack · 12/01/2017 14:34

The story as you told it really doesn't sound plausible.

A detention for one burn seems overkill but I'd lay odds there is more to this. I'd make a polite call to the teacher concerned, not to challenge the detention but to find out what really happened.

Get both sides and then make a judgement.

scurryfunge · 12/01/2017 14:36

Getting a detention for burping would have been a badge of honour at my school.
Not helpful, sorry.

FannyWisdom · 12/01/2017 14:36

Either she was burping the alphabet or she did a big one.

Teachers really don't give out speculative detentions.

Stop spoiling for a fight with school and use your energy on practical stuff.

DriftingDreamer · 12/01/2017 14:37

My 11 year old burps loudly at home and I tell him off. He goes all indignant saying he can't help it. I know he can make it more discreet...
Same to an extent with his farts- oh how hilarious...
Not had phonecall from school yet though....

user1484227404 · 12/01/2017 14:37

Yeah I will need to find out her manners are good at home never had a problem with her so I am shocked

she shouldn't be ringing you from school, full stop. This is likely to get her into further trouble

user1484227404 · 12/01/2017 14:39

Yeah this is what I will do

Heifer · 12/01/2017 17:10

Got to agree with others, changes are that she let out a louddr belch than was needed (or maybe even did on purpose).. My DD (yr8) is also very well behaved etc etc but even the good ones mess around with their mates too. I would really let it go.

If you do phone the school wait until tomorrow and don't mention that she phoned you as you could get her into more trouble, most schools have a no phone policy (even at lunch time)..

I wonder in which other professions, your every move is questioned and challenged in the same way teachers are.
