Following on from the preparing for AS levels thread.

Hopefully everyone is finishing off AS exams.

DD and DH are staying over as they want to take more of a look at the town, areas where students rent houses etc. They had a good day too, good dept and the student accommodation is v good and right on the edge of the Peak District which is a positive in DDs opinion.

Horsemad · 16/07/2016 19:58

Glad you both enjoyed it.

DS liked it so it's on his list for now Smile

bigTillyMint · 16/07/2016 19:59

I think what swung it for DD was the Paternoster lift in the Arts Tower Grin

Horsemad · 16/07/2016 20:00

Grrr, posted too soon.

DS liked it 'eventually', although he prefers others (Leeds) more!

bigTillyMint · 16/07/2016 20:21

Horse, is it the course he prefers more at Leeds?

Horsemad · 16/07/2016 20:31

He liked everything really bTM; the course, the whole 'feel' of the campus and their fitness suite!! (And the fact free membership is offered to Fresher's).

bigTillyMint · 16/07/2016 20:44

Oh yes, DD liked that too. And the charming student who explained it allWink

ono40 · 16/07/2016 21:15

DS quite liked Sheffield today but the journey was a bit of a pain as he had to change trains twice. I'm not sure what he thought of the course but there looks to be a lot of mediaeval history which I know he's not that keen on. So far he has liked Newcastle best and then Birmingham. Anyone doing Leicester on Friday?

To those doing DofE don't forget the Compeed blister plasters, absolutely essential!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 16/07/2016 21:31

thanks for the good wishes for DS ono

Great to read that people are finding places they like!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 16/07/2016 21:33

Good tip about the blister plasters Thanks

teta · 16/07/2016 22:53

Oops, she's gone off without blister plasters, but with normal ones.
This is a practice so they're coasteering and orienteering for the first few days then the expedition and the wild camping.Yes we took advice and bought loads of junk food plus Kendal mint cake and packets of nuts etc.
I'm just relieved dd is doing something other than schoolwork and projects/ work experience,as she really is absolutely exhausted.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/07/2016 11:29

That sounds great, teta - a good change of pace!

Sheffield def on DDs list. They're back and she's at her desk with her nose in the maths M3 book which arrived yesterday - it's not one of the options her school teaches but she and a couple of others who are set on engineering have been given permission to learn it themselves either instead of S3 or as an extra. I think it's the topics requiring large supplies of light in extensible string.Grin

Sorry - it said the post had failed and to retry, evidently it was confused.

lasermum · 18/07/2016 19:04

Had a letter from sixth form today confirming students must achieve a grade D in their AS subjects to be allowed to continue the subject. I would have thought a grade E would be the minimum (sixth form attached to a comprehensive school).

Pupils took AS levels in all subjects.

Is this common?

bigTillyMint · 18/07/2016 19:09

Yep - same at both DD's old school and current school.

OddBoots · 18/07/2016 19:40

I've not heard anything like that from DS's college but it has a very varied intake. There is a day in late August that they need to go to confirm their study plans for next year so it may come up then (if relevant).

Horsemad · 18/07/2016 20:52

Yep, ours have to achieve a D or above to continue into U6.

Quite a few were not permitted to stay on 2 yrs ago when DS1 was doing his AS levels.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2016 23:37

Yes, D here too, though I think that they give the option of redoing yr 12 with a different subject rather than necessarily chucking them out. I think this is the last year they'll make everyone do the AS ( unless it's still in two parts like maths of course) - so who knows how they'll do things next year.

ono40 · 20/07/2016 11:00

How is everyone? Glad this is the last week of school as we are all tired now. Yes, DS's school asks for a minimum grade C to continue at A2 or predicted D plus taking a minimum of three subjects so if they dropped one half way through Y12 and then get a D at AS they are stymied.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2016 13:19

Hols started this week for us, but DD busy - she's been given permission do do M3 in addition to the other maths modules her school teaches so she's started that, and today has recommenced work on her EPQ. But also tidied her room unbidden! And (I'm glad to say) spent most of yesterday lounging in the garden with a (non work related) book.Smile

I've been tasked with taking her on a shopping trip to try to find her some appropriate clothes for any interviews/applicant days. Neither of us likes shopping and I'm a bit clueless what to look for where. She's shotHmm and curvy

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2016 13:24

Bugger .. Hit post instead of delete ... Short and curvy. Lives in black skinnies, checked shirts, hightops or docs. Has a dress and jacket which she looks great in imo, but not right for this - needs some sort of trousers and jacket. We're envying the lads who can just do a standard suit!

ono40 · 20/07/2016 17:16

Yikes, three unis have already announced fee hike, not huge to be honest but definitely the wrong direction www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-36845106

HSMMaCM · 20/07/2016 17:23

Not sure about AS grade requirements at DD's college (bad parent). She has a back to college interview on 5th September and staff will apparently be available on results day.

DD was supposed to spend the last month revising driving test theory and is now panicking about the test, because she hasn't learnt it. Test is on 25th July.

She has managed to spend a lot of time socialising though, which I keep telling myself is an indicator of something good.

DD has been finished for 3 weeks. Not sure how the school get away with it, but she's not complaining - has been chilling and partying. Had an email from the school today about picking up AS grades and saying minimI'm of 2 Ds to continue next year.

Erroll, DD is also short, petite snd curvy. No idea what she will wear if she needs a smart outfit for an interview (God forbid!) But she foes have s couple of things from work experience 2 years ago and a mountain of skimpy outfits Grin
