Following on from the preparing for AS levels thread.

Hopefully everyone is finishing off AS exams.

She sent DH a selfie of her and friends drinking pints in a pub garden last night - seems the shires have more lax licensing laws than heregrin

I spotted a parent of one of DS's peers buying cider for their son's 17th birthday party tonight; clearly they are subject to less stringent licensing laws in their road than we are in ours! Naturally I was full of disapproval and hoicked by judgy pants incredibly high. Maybe. Grin

I have had a quick look at the specifications for DS's reformed subjects and he will have 3 exams for Physics (AQA 7408) and 2 exams and a programming project for Computer Science (OCR H446).

So along with his six exams for further maths it looks like he will have 11 exams and a project to do this time next year. This year he has done 10 exams and and extra autocad thing so only a bit more next year although the reformed exams will obviously cover double the material.

He will only be doing all 4 subjects next year if he gets all 'A' at AS level though, if he drops a grade or more he will be dropping Physics.

HSMMaCM · 29/05/2016 10:15

11 exams and a project !

Now I'm starting to be a bit glad about all DD's after school drama junk. At least that is spread out over the year a bit and doesn't clash horrendously with her sitting down in a room exams.

DD had 8 exams this year. She will drop an AS, so will have 3 A'levels to do. I am guessing 3 exams for each, so 9 in total? I don't think she is going to be remotely interested in doing more study for an EPQGrin

dingit · 29/05/2016 12:32

Dd is doing an Epq because some universities lower their offers if you get an A* for Epq.

bigTillyMint · 29/05/2016 13:03

Dingit, I don't think a cash offer of £1K would persuade DD to do any extra workGrin

ono40 · 29/05/2016 14:08

Thanks HSM

I can't believe you all finish school so early, we don't break up until 22nd July!

The provisional A2 timetables are online for 2017. DS's run from 9th to 22nd June with three days in a row in the final week and the dreaded 3 hour English last.

ono40 · 29/05/2016 14:11

LittleHouse I think what your DS means that if he is taking a linear subject like History, his AS will count for nowt and he has to take the same topics (like Italy and Britain) but a different A2 paper next June. So even if he took the AS papers in Britain and Italy this year, next year he would still have three history papers - Britain and Italy (but A2 papers this time with different AOs and a different style of question) plus the Paper 3 option.

I think AS will probably die out in a few years as the Universities don't seem bothered about them and it is a faff because teachers will need to spend time teaching the kids how to answer different questions. Shame our lot have to be the guinea pigs.

bigTillyMint · 29/05/2016 14:30

Ono, I daren't look up the Alevel exams!

I guess they will die out pretty fast if some schools are only doing them for the unchanged subjects - the sixthforms (like DDs) who are doing them for all subjects are going to have to change course again I guess.

nuttymango · 29/05/2016 15:52

I can't see AS levels lasting either, I'll find out when we go through this all next time - DD starts year 7 in September so I've got that pleasure first.

bigTillyMint · 29/05/2016 16:27

I'm hoping they go before then - DS could be doing them in 2yrs time!

nuttymango · 29/05/2016 20:26

Go us, we have spent the evening going through the prospectuses and now have DS's short list of ones to visit.

HSMMaCM · 29/05/2016 21:00

Ooh nutty. I've spent the evening eating Thai food in a different county to DD Grin

That must have been good then! I love Thai food :)

JugglingFromHereToThere · 30/05/2016 05:44

Well done nutty, we need to have a further look into that here I think.

nuttymango · 30/05/2016 10:19

I'm glad we've got a plan now, it was all feeling rather intimidating because we've got a lot of other stuff on at the moment. I hadn't realised how much it was on my mind until we'd done it.

DS is now booked to look round Birmingham, Cardiff, Bath, Bristol, Loughborough and another as an insurance offer. We spoke about only looking at Russell group but there are ones that aren't RG that he's particularly keen on with regard to course content. I think that's fine.

bigTillyMint · 30/05/2016 10:39

As DD hasn't a clue what she wants to study, she's choosing uni's on the basis of social lifeGrin Only 2 booked ATM, but I'm hoping she might book at least one more for early July when they will have broken up!

nuttymango · 30/05/2016 11:09

DS is choosing based on the course, he's not a social animal except with close friends, though he's planning to live in even if he goes to his insurance choice which is only 5 miles down the road.

bigTillyMint · 30/05/2016 11:28

Would he get a place in halls being so close? Not a prob if they have loads of spaces in halls I guess!

GinandJag · 30/05/2016 11:36

DD has two exams left.

Her year group returns to school on the 13th and they have a programme to follow including the UCAS process, and community service as well as standard end of year activities, such as Sports Day.

She will also break the back of her EPQ, so that she can write it up in the holidays and do her presentation in September.

GinandJag · 30/05/2016 11:38

My DD1 is at uni 2 miles away and is in halls. She does bring her laundry home, though.

nuttymango · 30/05/2016 11:45

I don't know for sure but I guess so as it's not a massively popular university. I doubt that he'll go there as they want quite low grades and he's predicted quite a bit higher fingers crossed
