Following on from the preparing for AS levels thread.

Hopefully everyone is finishing off AS exams.

I can't make head nor tail of it. The result slip doesn't seem to have all the info asked for in the converters.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 27/08/2016 06:42

For instance:
Board: AQA
Level: GCE/ASB
Element code: 7041CN
Title: History AS Option CN
Grd: C
Points: 105

bigTillyMint · 27/08/2016 07:16

Iv'e just looked Toast and it doesn't look like you have all the info - is that the combined score? Did your DS do Tudors and Russia? Are there definitely no other marks on the breakdown (further down the sheet on DD's)

MirabelleTree · 27/08/2016 14:40

Hi all, have name changed slightly (I'm the one with the DD who has already buggered off).

Good to see results went well overall. Ono I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum but pleased that's she's doing better now, how stressful.

Just had to nag DD to email her tutor re sorting out Skype sessions. I'm rather nervous as to how doing an A level remotely in a year is going to work but fingers crossed. Need to sort somewhere for her to sit the exams. She's so happy not to be doing her BTEC anymore which helps but I'm worried her quest to raise money to travel next summer might get in the way of studying. I'm trying to get her to stick to proper terms and holiday as if she is at school/college.

I had some experience of Clearing last week which was an eye opener and have some tips ready to post for next summer, though hopefully no one will need them.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 27/08/2016 15:36

Thanks bigTillyMint yes, he did do the Tudors and Russians. I'll scan the part of the slip that has the details on and post it up here. Will be tomorrow now though.

bigTillyMint · 27/08/2016 15:47

Ah so did DD - I will see if I can find out what DH worked out for her.

So I think the 105 must be his Raw marks for both? If you have the scores for the individual papers? DH has written 35 is an A, 30 is a B, 25 is a C. Not sure what a D is!

HSMMaCM · 27/08/2016 16:39

Mirabelle have you got used to her being away yet? DD has been away for a week and it feels like forever.

OP posts:
MirabelleTree · 27/08/2016 17:11

Yes I have HSM, we have settled into a new kind of normal. The time has been broken up though as she came back to come on holiday with us for a couple of weeks but went away again a week ago. . As she's going about her new life rather than being on holiday I hear from her most days so feel in the loop still. We heard much less when she was on holiday last year for 2 weeks.

bigTillyMint · 27/08/2016 17:52

Hi Mirabelle - glad to hear all is still OK with your DD. Great that she is being so independent. And I'm sure the tips on clearing will come in most handy!

I must be an awful mum as I am really enjoying DD being at Reading and am not worrying about her at all Blush

Back from hols, checking back in.

Dingit, ive forgotten which sort of eng uiur

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2016 22:41

Bugger... Which sort of eng your DD is going to do? One thing you might want to check up on is that some places if they apply for an MEng offer they get a 'free' BEng offer a grade or so lower - iirc Southampton elec eng its A*AA for the MEng but AAA would get them onto the BEng... And if they're doing ok after the first year they can then transfer to the MEng.

dingit · 28/08/2016 09:19

Errolthedragon, she's doing aerospace engineering, and yes thanks we learned that on one of our university visits. I still think she's setting her sights a bit high, sigh. We are going to have to choose carefully. We want to avoid being in adjustment or clearing, so I think she needs to apply to one high, two medium and two low, and see what comes back..

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 28/08/2016 10:29

bigTillyMint Thanks for the info. I have attached the marks. Did your Daughter enjoy the course? My Son enjoyed the Russian part but found the Tudors heavy going. He left his revising too late IMO, I spent hours and hours reading it out loud, he said it sunk in better than reading it himself, I was getting into it myself by the end Grin

Toast, DD hated the Tudors - said it was boring, but also took against the teacher (who I think is a bit of a strange young man!), but we found a tutor for about 5 sessions and that really helped her. She is now stuck deciding whether to drop History or Economics as she feels she might be more likely to get a better grade in History if she really works (it was her top subject at GCSE) but she doesn't know if she can face the teacher for another year!

Just looked at her sheet and DH has explained that she got the breakdown of marks for each paper from her teachers (asked the Russia one who she likes!) Could your DS email his teacher[s] to find out his marks?

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 28/08/2016 10:59

That's a shame about the teacher, makes such a difference when they like the them doesn't it, is that the only history teacher in the school/college?

My son doesn't know I'm trying to get this info, was just curious to see if they were close calls or not. Most things with my Son is like getting blood from a stone, so he'll not be emailing anyone on my say so Hmm

I think if he really pulls his finger out and gets his head down, he could get B's by this time next year, not that I'm not pleased with C's because I am, he thought he would be getting D's or lower, I've told him he should have more faith in himself, he was the same with his GCSE's, did better than he thought he would.

So did your daughter do 3 subjects altogether this past year, then doing 2 subjects in September?

bigTillyMint · 28/08/2016 11:27

Toast, I think its a decent sized History department, and she likes the Russia teacher, but I think the Tudors teacher will be carrying them on this next year IYSWIM. However, she also thinks quite a few will have dropped it, so the group (which was big) will probably be quite a bit smaller. And she said he was OK with her towards the end.... But then she likes her Eco teacher...

She did 4 subjects to AS, now dropping to 3 for A'level, and I am pleased with her AS grades given that she didn't work enough all year - she is saying she will get her head down this year, so we will see if she works to achieve her potential! We have the opposite - too much information, though of course, always from her angle (especially in the heat of the moment!)

Is your DS carrying on with all 3?

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 28/08/2016 11:49

Sounds like it might go well next year with the history teacher then, especially with a smaller group too.

Yes, carrying on with the 3. Hopefully they can both achieve their full potential, fingers crossed!

SvalbardianPenguin · 28/08/2016 14:54

thanks for the grade boundaries. DS's results slip just had a grade and then 135 next to it, I've no idea what the 135 is though.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 28/08/2016 16:44

I know, it's not very straight forward at all.

MirabelleTree · 31/08/2016 12:13

DD's tutor is going abroad and can't commit to teaching her next year. My fault, I let DD handle the contact with her and i don't think DD was clear she wanted her for this September.

It was so hard finding her in the first place, I'm gutted.

bigTillyMint · 31/08/2016 12:32

Oh no Mirabelle Sad

But it's not just down to you - it's your DD who wants to do it and as she is managing ok living in another country, surely she could habe managed to tie that down?

Or it could just be the tutor.

MirabelleTree · 31/08/2016 12:40

I've flipped it back onto her. She sent me a link to some tutors who say they can teach to A level and will do Skype lessons. I'm a bit wary as had someone before who taught JLPT and said she could do GCSE but was rubbish.

There is one on there who is a possibility though so I've told her to contact her. Also made it clear that the JLPT is not acceptable alternative . I know it has more international currency effectively but doesn't translate into UCAS points. University not on the cards at the moment but I agreed to the move on the grounds it will still leave options open which the A level will do combined with the BTEC she already has.

bigTillyMint · 31/08/2016 12:45

That sounds sensible - fingers crossed.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/08/2016 12:48

DIdn't you mention skype sessions upthread, Mirabelle - can the tutor not do those from elsewhere? (probably it's a commitment/time thing not just location though...) . I was away from these threads so don't know what your DD is doing and where but sounds complicated!

DDs school starts back tomorrow, late start as they're getting the yr7 and 12s in for a couple of hours first. She's eager to get back - be interesting to find out how others did esp on the physics AS which many thought was bad , the school hasn't published results tables for AS.

MirabelleTree · 31/08/2016 12:49

I am very jealous of you who have DC who just get on with things at school/college. Please, please let DS follow an easier to arrange path! He is far more conventional though so I think he is more likely to.
