Hi. I'm just interested to know if anyone has received any remarks back yet and if so, how long they took and what the outcome was? My DS has a AQA English Language in for remark and it is like waiting for the GSCE results all over again!!

Uhhe why didn't I just 'accidentally" open it

QOD · 25/09/2015 15:46

3 Aqa back .... all remain exactly the sAme
lol

Not moved by a single point

Majaso12 · 25/09/2015 15:55

That's a shame, but at least you tried. I'm always going to wonder about the biology I think. Still waiting for igcse English.

Majaso12 · 25/09/2015 15:57

How many marks did your dad need on each?

QOD · 25/09/2015 16:09

1 !! 1 poxy point on all 3 to go from A to A*

IGCSE we're still waiting for

Majaso12 · 25/09/2015 16:24

How annoying! So frustrating being that close. My ds needed 1 on literature but it went down 8! Needed 2 on psychology and it went up 1, think I would have rather it hadn't gone up at all!

I have to try and tell myself that I doubt biology would have gone up 3 or I'll drive myself mad.

Majaso12 · 25/09/2015 16:29

Were they on sciences?

noblegiraffe · 25/09/2015 16:35

Only 5% of my schools remarks went up a grade, which is a lot less than last year when English marking appeared to be a disaster.

We had a couple of maths results go up a grade this year though, which is unusual for us.

noblegiraffe · 25/09/2015 16:38

Incidentally, Ofqual say that only 1% of grades change on a remark. I expect speculative remarks that aren't that close to the boundary bring that score down.

swingofthings · 25/09/2015 17:05

How long can we expect remarking to take. I've asked the school two weeks ago, didn't think it was anything unusual but your experience maj makes me a bit nervous. Did you pay the school on that same day too?

Awaiting Eng Lit results, but don't expect better marks. It's the CA that was the issue, so it was a case going for it as nothing to lose (would need to lose 17 points to go down a grade). In a way, it would almost be easier to deal with lower marks as we could move on to the frustration that she was so close to the overall grade she deserved (as the school agreed, but can't go back on what they didn't do that led to the CA outcome).

QOD · 25/09/2015 17:07

Biology physics and engkish lit

Majaso12 · 25/09/2015 17:25

The school agreed to pay for chemistry as I'd paid quite a lot in remarks. The deputy head said as chemistry went up and they didn't have to pay, they would pay for the biology, so no, I didn't pay. I don't think you have anything to worry about if you've paid.

We've had issues with German writing controlled assessment and computing controlled assessment. German was moderated down 2 grades, so had it remarked but didn't change. With computing the school let the students down massively. Was told it was a mid A and came back as low D as did the whole class. So many times I said how concerned I was about the quality of teaching. Think something major was missed out to go down that much. My ds managed to get a good A in the exam by mainly teaching himself, for it to be brought down to a C overall by the controlled assessment. Not happy with school at all with so many things!

swingofthings · 25/09/2015 18:23

Similar issue here, the school admitted they had let my DD down. Due to internal challenges, they prioritised their attention to those who got E's at the CA and ignored those who had grades two marks lower than targeted. They admitted that this was due to lack of resources. They said that they should have picked up that DD had got much lower than expected and worked with her to have it re-moderated. Unfortunately, what would have been a low B ended up a C. Frustrating as she got two good As, leaving her 3 points away from an overall A. So went for remarking of these two on the one off chance, but I think she was already lucky to get these marks, so would be much less surprised if they went down than up, but decided to take the chance as highly unlikely it would go down to a C overall.

Unfortunately, it was the first time I felt the school let down DD/DS. It has certainly dented my trust in them

thunderbird69 · 25/09/2015 20:12

Noble - I'm sure I read online that last year around 70,000 were re-graded out of about 400,000 appeals (not sure on exact figures but I looked it up before putting the requests in)

noblegiraffe · 25/09/2015 20:20

Ah you're right, thunderbird. I just looked up the 1% figure and that's the percentage of qualifications taken, not the percentage remarked. The percentage of remarks that resulted in a grade change was 18.7% which is massive!

Bit annoyed at them promoting the 1% figure when most grades aren't challenged so the real percentage of wrongly awarded grades could actually be much higher!

Kez100 · 25/09/2015 23:50

Also, by the time you take out the remarks of papers with likely very little change - maths and probably sciences to some extent, it's getting a higher percentage again for the subjective papers

swingofthings · 26/09/2015 09:41

This is a very high result. If we consider that the first marking was wrong, hence the change, doesn't this bring into question the whole marking process?

It must be interesting to remark a paper as it will be clear what the expectation is. If you are remarking a very good paper, than it becomes obvious that the reason for the remarking is an expectation of an A* as opposed to an A (for instance). How much does this influence remarking if indeed, it is so subjective that up to almost 20% are considered wrong in the first place?

notusualnamebuthadtochange · 26/09/2015 10:02

with regards to remarks, I requested 2 papers to be remarked for my subject as they were very close to the next grade (1 raw mark for both students). The marks came back as 1 student gaining the mark, another not. Electronic copies of the papers were returned to with the original marking and the remarked scores for each question.

Going through the paper it was very clear that the student whose mark did not change had a question that was incorrectly marked on both occasions. Whilst it didn't deserve full marks, it definitely warranted being marked in the mid band and at least 3 marks given (I marked this paper for the board, so I'm very aware of the marking process, scheme and the need to positively mark).

The only thing we can do is appeal against any issues with process and not the mark. So my HT has signed the letter stating that the mark scheme and positively marking process has not been followed.

Looking through the paper for the successful student, I noticed that the original mark and remark was also incorrect for a different question! (think a question that gives a numerical answer, no working out needed so if the answer is 15, then 15 is marked correct) - as he was given the extra mark on another question we haven't appealed this marking!

thunderbird69 · 26/09/2015 14:05

notusual - thanks for the insider info, that is really interesting (and worrying!)

whathaveiforgottentoday · 26/09/2015 15:38

always worth remarking if only one or two marks off. I've had one GCSE student in my class go up from A to A (she was predicted A so very pleased) and another go from B to A at A level.

School paid for these remarks as always worth it.

Majaso12 · 28/09/2015 10:30

I still haven't heard from the deputy head whether he put biology in for a remark. I think he does know, is just delaying telling me he didn't do it. He said he'll look into it this week, but surely it shouldn't take long to find out. Not sure whether to send another email, but it's getting embarrassing the amount of emails I've sent. I just want to know! Exam Officer also won't respond to my email asking why it wasn't put in as I'd also emailed her in the morning, which wasn't too late in the day for her to do it.

Majaso12 · 28/09/2015 14:36

Igcse English language has gone up to an A. It went up 4%. CIE give it in % not marks.

thunderbird69 · 28/09/2015 15:18

Great news Majaso!

Still waiting here. I did email the exam sec last Friday to ask if they'd heard anything but not had a reply. Will wait a couple more days before phoning.

Majaso12 · 28/09/2015 15:35

I had to email exam officer to find out. Ds said deputy came up to him at school and said it had gone up to an A* which I thought seemed a lot. I waited for an email, but didn't get one. Think ds must have heard wrong.
