Hope it all works out Welshpixie and It doesn't become too stressful if your DD chooses to wait. Keep us posted of course.

All school and music school related activities now over for DD. Been a very emotional week, but a quiet weekend. A few extra work shifts and a party next week.
She is starting to think forward a bit more and is saying will not go anywhere other than her first choice Uni. I can see her logic, as her specialism not suited to most Uni courses. But she also thinks she has missed her offer, and whilst they hinted not everyone meets it, will depend on how many grades dropped. Also noted that her course is in clearing, not sure whether that is a good or bad sign for those with offers.
So already talking about retaking and reapplying next year. I suspect this would need to be done privately, and could prove difficult.
I know we won't know anything until the big day, but feeling kind of helpless.

Littleham · 12/07/2015 11:38

I feel helpless too. Worried. Sad

circular - we are in exactly the same position here with dd saying she won't go anywhere other than her first choice despite feeling that her A levels didn't go that well and so quite possible that she won't have secured her place at her first choice - aaargh! She is also talking about a gap year and re-applying. I can't bear to read the thread on the Higher Education board about preparing for university as I am not sure enough yet that we will need it!

circular · 12/07/2015 13:21

MrsB Are you actively looking into retake possibilities or just keeping everything crossed for now?
I am really confused as to whether yo can just take one or two modules to push grades up, or need to retake the whole A level?
I remember last year DD was convinced that her AS results would not be enough to get back into school. So we had liked into alternatives then, vp but there seemed to be more options at th end if year 12.

MrsBartlet · 12/07/2015 15:45

No not at the moment, circular - like you say we are just keeping everything crossed and we will cross that bridge when (if) we come to it. Dd's problem is that her insurance place is not her actual second choice but strategically was the only one she could put due to the offers she had. Given how expensive university is these days I don't want to push her into going to her insurance place if she doesn't really want to go there as I can imagine her dropping out. Still really hoping it won't come to that but lots of her friends who did the IB didn't make the grades for their firms so it has brought it home how much of a possibility that is Sad Let's hope we are worrying for nothing!

circular · 12/07/2015 17:03

Very similar here, MrsB. Insurance choice lowest offer but furthest away., Though guarantees accommodation. Also less likely to drop. Real 2nd choice same offer as first, but technically higher as asking for highest grade in man subject where others not. also known to be problematic on accommodation.
Has a EE Music school place too which was a back up, but where it started out 50/50 between that and Uni, increasingly thinking not such a good idea.

MrsBartlet · 12/07/2015 17:07

It is all so stressful - roll on results day so we know what we are dealing with. We are off on holiday next weekend and then when we get back it will be August - not that I am counting down the days or anything Grin

Molio · 12/07/2015 17:14

Oh dear I'm so sorry to hear about your DD welshpixie. The having to wait until A Levels are out must make it infinitely worse. I'll cross my fingers - it sometimes works.

Littleham DS3 is Somewhere in Europe with friends but I'm not sure where. Between Prague and Germany I think. His brother got a message a week ago but nothing else. I'm assuming they're fine. I'm relying on other mothers with sons with smarter phones to tell me if things go awry.

circular · 12/07/2015 17:20

Have a great holiday MrsB. DD puttting in quite a few work shifts between socialising, so hopefully taking her mind off it. Find she gets worse when it gets very close.

Littleham · 12/07/2015 17:25

Hope your ds3 has a good time Molio - sounds fun. Also hoping it works out well for welshpixie jnr.

My dd is still in Spain and got a few text messages about how ill she was (vomiting) but she is better now. Meanwhile lots of worry about another one of my dc.

Where did the stress free summer go?

Evening all! Exams seem aaaages ago, don't they? Haven't really had time to dwell on results day as helping DS prepare for his trip to S Africa. Prob for the best!!
Once he's gone on Thurs I'll start my results day countdown! Hmm

Leeds2 · 12/07/2015 22:41

Sorry about your towels, mumslife, but that did make me laugh! How do you like DD'd hair?

Molio · 12/07/2015 22:54

I hope it's not a serious worry Littleham.

HocusUcas · 13/07/2015 01:23

Also hoping well for your DC.

circular · 13/07/2015 06:29

Hope all is well with your DC Littleham.

Cooroo · 13/07/2015 06:49

Mostly lurk here. To my astonishment DD has got a job in a fancy dress shop which she seems to be enjoying. Should I be taking some money off her for board? DO thinks so, I'm torn. It wouldn't be much - anyone else doing this? Is 10% right?

Feeling anxious about results. She needs AAB, may get on on ABB, may get that, certainly hope so as her plan B is to retake!

circular · 13/07/2015 07:52

Coroo DD has had p/t work for nearly a year, gets around £300 a month. Don't take any board money but paying out less for her. Used to buy stuff like friends birthday presents, all her close and travel. Now only pay for her essential clothes and travel. She is taking on a few more shifts during the holidays, still don't plan to take any money but expect to see evidence of saving a good chunk and to listen to my lectures on budgeting in preparation for Uni.

welshpixie · 13/07/2015 10:21

Thanks everyone for your concern, she applied for Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic in Cambridge and Archaeology in Leicester so slightly different courses. She seems to have calmed down and is resigned to waiting. We have a bigger problem with getting our money from the sale of our flat and are having to sleep at my parents so uni is less pressing.

Littleham · 13/07/2015 10:50

Thanks everyone. Suggested all sorts of remedies via text and the trusty charcoal tablet has worked. Smile

Welshpixie, Cambridge will be under a legal obligation to give "equal consideration" to all EU candidates, so probably cannot confirm her offer till all results are in. Her offer will have been based on interview scores etc as well as predicted results. The fact they have not rejected her yet suggests the other aspects of her application were strong.

Cambridge humanities offers tend to be high. Based on those we know, missing an offer is not unusual. Sciences are easier as results seem to be more predictable. A couple we knew missed their grades, resat and reapplied and got offers second time round as well.

Mumslife - presumably the blue towels are now going with your DD to uni?

DS has clarinet exam tomorrow, then nothing else arranged. Am trying to persuade him to look for jobs by going out of the house, not just looking on internet.

welshpixie · 13/07/2015 15:52

Needmore Thanks for the reassurance, personally I think her overall impression will be strong, she absolutely loves the course at Cambridge and at one point was only looking at the Uk because of it. She is a real medieval enthusiast and the thought of learning old languages really appeals (I can think of nothing worse Grin).
We are just in desperate need of the house being sorted, hopefully after several phone calls to Germany I think I have made some headway with their bureaucracy go me!
