Oh God Word, that brings back memories - History of European Politics that we did for O'level (think it was revolution, reaction and reform) And not in a good way!

HSMMaCM · 04/05/2015 17:30

Word ... Nearly fell asleep there... History always had that affect on me Grin

My dd has an interview Friday for 6th form ... she wants to go to a BOYD Grammar school as she's a science girl and they seem to do great at A level. It varies year to year but current year 12 are 60% male 40% female

At het girls grammar only the real boffin girls do sciences at A level and she doesn't consider herself one and things better at a boys school as all sorts of ability take them.
Freaks me right out! Boyd!

QOD · 04/05/2015 17:44

Talk of history just gave me a flashback ... I took History of Medicine at college ... went to the exam and more than half the paper was normal history. Apparently we were told to . learn it independently ... I didn't . Lord knows how I passed

Littleham · 04/05/2015 17:53

I love History & drag assorted teenagers to any monument, house, battlefield or ruin I can find. Am pleased to say that it rubbed off on one out of the four. The others just groan....'not another pile of stones Mum'.

What is Boyd? Confused

bigTillyMint · 04/05/2015 17:55

QOD, what is a BOYD grammar school? Or do you mean boys?Grin 60/40 seems a reasonable balance?

DD does History of Medicine as part of her History GCSE, but they are taught the other bit too!

spudmasher · 04/05/2015 18:00

Hello everyone.
Well done to all those DC who are revising independently....and empathetic hugs for all whose DC are resisiting even the gentlest of encouragement....I fall into the latter category!
To be fair to DD she has done amazingly well- unashamed boast alert......
She has won a full scholarship to study a diploma at a top performing arts college and only needs three grade c results ( already has an a and a b from last year...) she can do a dissertation and convert to a degree thus graduating with no debt whatsoever, so I can see why she's looking smug. BUT!!!
But.....I would like full effort to secure good results for if/when the performing arts career isn't quite bringing in the money.
I am nagtastic and it's doing no one any favours!!
I know I need to back off...but it's hard.

Horsemad · 04/05/2015 18:04

Grin at 'nagtastic'!!! That's me, that is! I'm trying hard to not nag (have locked myself away on tablet in bedroom and left them to it Smile )

SugarPlumTree · 04/05/2015 18:04

I don't know what a BOYD Grammar is either. Didn't like history at school and didn't take it for O Level but find it really interesting now, would really enjoy History of Medicine.

Very tense atmosphere all afternoon with request to sort bag so has clear pencil case and exam timetable causing friction. She has however just received an email to say her short film has been short listed to be shown in the U17 category of a small short film festival somewhere in Houston. First thing she entered and is very pleased, atmosphere improved no end and bag packed.

Littleham · 04/05/2015 18:10

Oh boys. Now I understand the twitch.

Hi spudmasher Smile Well done to your dd & lovely grade requirements that take the pressure off.

My bribe today was a jar of pickled gherkins (which my dd loves) and it worked. Grin

Littleham · 04/05/2015 18:11

and well done to mini SugarPlum for the film short listing. Fantastic. Smile

bigTillyMint · 04/05/2015 18:12

Littleham, my DM did the same and I developed an aversion to museums and piles of stones!
Both of mine are very interested in 20th Century history, and WW2 in particular!

spudmasher · 04/05/2015 18:13

Littleham now there's an idea- food bribes!
But the way I'm feeling at the moment, that could go too far.....no revision=no food.

SugarPlumTree · 04/05/2015 18:17

That's great Spudmasher and nagtastic is what I am trying not to be tooGrin

Boys Grammar makes sense now, I'm very slow off the mark today (well most of the time at the moment).

spudmasher · 04/05/2015 18:22

So does your DD get to go to Houston Sugarplum? You said bag packed......or is bag packed for school tomorrow!?

So glad DDs school does not do study leave. At least the teachers can be on her back at school- they have their reputation to preserve and DD owes them that. She's had a great time at school and loves her teachers so that should count....shouldn't it?

SugarPlumTree · 04/05/2015 18:30

Depressingly it is bag packed for English Language GCSE tomorrow rather than Houston !

ErrolTheDragon · 04/05/2015 22:28

Wishing the best of luck for your DD for tomorrow, sugar. Brilliant news about the film, that must have boosted her confidence in herself. The thing is - there may be thousands of kids who can get a string of A* gcses, but hardly any with a chance of getting their work shown in a film festival. She's obviously got a real talent.

We've still got another week to go. DD did her last volunteering session on Saturday and got it signed off for her DofE. Quite a lot of other revision and some past papers done too, I think. She did half an Eng Lit (poetry) this morning and reckons she's starting to get the hang of the sort of bullshitting required. Of course I've not been allowed to read it, though I'm curious to know what the heck she made of 'To his coy mistress' (having mentioned to me 'vegetable innuendo'. Hmm)

QOD · 04/05/2015 23:15

I'm such a div. I need to check.posts before hitting post!

BOYS Grin

Horsemad · 05/05/2015 00:40

Hmm, DS2 just bounced on me before going to bed that he needs a suit for Fri evening - just like that!
We are miles from any decent shops and he doesn't arrive home until 4.30pm.

We had planned to do prom suit shopping at half term but his footy managers have requested suits for their presentation evening. Of course, half the team had their prom last week and so are sorted. We are not!!! Hmm

SugarPlumTree · 05/05/2015 06:44

Grin at vegetable innuendo, I love teenagers ( most of the time), they can be so funny.

Thanks Errol. As you know she is really struggling with these exams and it has boosted her confidence and given her something to work for. I keep saying see these exams as an annoying hurdle to jump to get you where you want to be. I'mI'm very proud of her, she put a huge amount of effort into her film and did it all by herself.

Well it is D day or rather IGCSE English Language day. Good luck to everyone with a child sitting it.

Horsemad, that's a bit of a nightmare with the suit. Does he know anyone who isn'yisn't going to the presentation night but had prom last week that he could borrow one from?

bigTillyMint · 05/05/2015 06:44

Horse, is there anyone he could borrow from? If not, DH (who hates shopping but we have a wedding to go to in 2 weeks) needed a new suit so we (can't make a fashion decision on his own) ordered 3 online and he sent 2 back. They come pretty quickly!

MadAsgardian · 05/05/2015 06:45

Here we go. DD had a good old cry and stress out last night over physics revision but seems ok this morning.

Good luck to all DCs today.

TheWordFactory · 05/05/2015 07:00

Good luck to all our DC today Shock!!!!!

bigTillyMint · 05/05/2015 07:06

Yes, Good Luck to all those starting today!
