That's great, Littleham. What is the offer?

polkadottyme · 20/11/2014 18:25

Yipee well done littleham your almost there! And such a coincidence you recommend my dd Bristol yesterday good sign.

Horsemad · 20/11/2014 18:35

Congrats to webwiz & Littleham for the offers. Brilliant news! Smile
DS has had an invite to a post offer department day and an invitation to a department day at Southampton Grin - let's hope they make him an offer. I know there was an interview/dept day at Soton today, so off to check out TSR for tips...!!! Grin

Horsemad · 20/11/2014 18:51

Glad you've booked your DD's flight muffin. She'll be absolutely fine, but I'd feel the same as you! Grin

Mindgone · 20/11/2014 19:13

Well done to all for offers, flights booked etc! :)
Polka, you're very welcome! I have always found it useful and reassuring to know what others have been through, so thought I'd share. :)

polkadottyme · 20/11/2014 19:17

Horsemad -Im on TSR now just generally stalking to see what these students get up to??? Aswell as for other stuff. Think its an amazing little world for students.

webwiz · 20/11/2014 19:19

Thanks for the congrats everyone and well done to Littleham's DD. I wonder how many offers we've got on this thread - lots and lots!

Horsemad · 20/11/2014 19:23

Can't believe how busy the thread is getting!

Antaresisastar · 20/11/2014 19:26

Great news Littleham.
Ds heard from Liverpool today, offer is AAA including maths, have a feeling he will reject that one. He now has 4/5 offers, only Bath to go and he would be surprised if they give him an offer.

Waitingaround · 20/11/2014 19:59

littleham you could have both your dd's at bristol

Waitingaround · 20/11/2014 20:01

Ds has 4/5 of his offers now-just waiting for Durham to decide if they want him.

polkadottyme · 20/11/2014 20:25

Well done Antare my dd waiting on Bath too though she did get a email from Bath this week to say decision will be made in the new year so a longer wait. Something to do with them getting a lot of applications so longer processing time.

Littleham · 20/11/2014 20:26

Brilliant Antaresisaster.

Good luck to your ds Horsemad

Congrats Waitingaround! Two daughters at Bristol would be most convenient, but I'm staying well out of that particular decision. I strongly suspect that my four dc's will choose four corners of the country, so we will spend our whole life on the motorway! I do of course have my private tea shop rating system and dd2's current first choice of York fits very nicely with that... Wink

webwiz · 20/11/2014 21:09

Littleham I have my "would I like to come here for a weekend" rating. DD2 is at Bath at the moment and that scores very highly!

Changingnames32 · 20/11/2014 21:54

Can I just ask a question about Bath? Is your DD enjoying it there? DS is quite keen, thanks.

Antaresisastar · 20/11/2014 21:55

Webwiz, I have the same criteria. I have lived in Exeter and it definitely passes the test. Ds and I visited Leeds together, first time there for both of us, we both loved it. Leeds has the added bonus of being 30 mins from my best friend's home, so I might see more of her if he chooses Leeds.

webwiz · 20/11/2014 22:12

DD2 is in her final year now and has really enjoyed it in Bath. Her only complaint is the bus can be really slow in the morning because the traffic is so terrible.

webwiz · 20/11/2014 22:14

Leeds is a great city Antare - DD2 spent a year there on a work placement and really enjoyed it (and acquired a boyfriend!)

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 21/11/2014 08:45

Abra1d - having extensive experience of flying (more than I ever wanted to have) I have drawn one conclusion - I would never ever let my child or any young person travel unaccompanied with flybe. Or other tiny local airlines. I've been stranded once too often, and told I can either fly to Manchester (I live in Devon) or get the next flight home (in 2 days time) and then left to my own devices. The last time this happened I was in the IOM, and luckily my firm was able to organise a hotel and then pay for a flight back to London, and then the train, the next morning. I wouldn't risk my child being in a similar situation. Transnational flights with big airlines are fine. Short hops with tiny ones? Avoid avoid avoid. :( if DD1 applies to amsterdam and Belfast and york, and we decide she's flying, then I will go too. And probably bum around at the airport or in the shops while she does her stuff.

seimum · 21/11/2014 15:11

Good luck with all the offers coming through.

My DS has no offers as yet (as far as I know), but has been invited for interviews at 3 of his choices (York, Sheffield, Essex). This was a total surprise, as when DD1 & DD2 were applying a few years back, the only place asking for interview was Oxford.
Are more Uni's asking for interviews these days, or is it just his subject (electronic engineering)?

muffinmonster · 21/11/2014 15:13

Rabbit DD will be flying Ryanair, who are generally fine, but I know that when things go wrong they are RUBBISH at looking after their passengers. So I have pondered your scenario and come up with the following emergency plan:

• Maintain phone contact with DD throughout
• Go on booking.com to locate a non-dodgy hotel near where she has been stranded; book a room for DD (paying on my credit card) and direct her there
• whack some money into DD's bank account so she can buy a train ticket home the following morning. (She can travel by taxi from hotel to train station or I can talk her through an alternative arrangement.)

I feel better for having thought this through. Smile

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 21/11/2014 15:22

Muffin - I was once left stranded by Ryanair. Luckily I was able to buy an easy jet ticket for a flight that left only an hour later. I think your plan is very sensible indeed. Most of the time most travel plans go without a hitch, so the vast majority of people have no real experience of things going massively tits up - when you do a lot of traveling though you realise what can and does go wrong and it is always a good idea to have a contingency. 95 times out of 100 you won't need it, but the 5 times you do you will be so glad you planned ahead! Grin

Well done to all those with offers and interviews - this thread is such a cheering read, really. So nice to see all the hardworking DCs getting great news.

muffinmonster · 21/11/2014 15:53

Rabbit, For years I have secretly hoped to be stranded somewhere hundreds of miles from home (though somewhere like, say, Venice, in preference to Glasgow). I reckon a passport and a credit card could get me out of most emergencies (though clean underwear would be nice, too).

But this is getting off-topic. DD has offers so far from Aston (Birmingham), Hertfordshire and Hull, and is waiting to hear from Swansea. As far as the tea-shop test goes, it's a poor line-up. I think Glasgow is the winner (no offer yet, though).

Great to hear of the offers pouring in so quickly after forms were sent off. I thought we were in for months of waiting!

Horsemad · 21/11/2014 15:53

Seimum, it could just be that they are interviewing for his subject. A few unis are interviewing for Computer Science, although some students have received offers without being interviewed (usually the ones with fab AS results! Smile) As my DS has fairly average ones I'm expecting him to be interviewed to maybe 'prove' himself! Smile
