They probably read your MN posts!

Littleham · 18/11/2014 17:47

OMG - will have to attempt discretion otherwise I will blow my daughter's cover!

I hope they did Littleham - well done you!

It certainly gives dd more options. If she gets rejected by Durham and Cambridge then Exeter could well be her firm choice.

Horsemad · 18/11/2014 17:56

Excellent news about the Cambridge interview and also the amended Exeter offer, MrsB Smile

MissMillament · 18/11/2014 19:12

Hooray for MrsB's DD! Still waiting to hear from Oxford here!

Well done Anatare, Leeds use to be my home town I'm a Yorkshire lass :) he will love it in Leeds brilliant student life.
Well done to Mrs Bartlet so exciting are you going to go to the interview with your dd? Do Cambridge provide accomodation for you and DH? It will be good day out abeit nervous one too :)
Littleham- good luck to you hope your dd gets a Oxford interview

polkadottyme · 18/11/2014 20:45

Good luck to you too Mrs M for oxford too, I keep forgetting to add comments on to my post brain working faster than my fingers can type

MrsBartlet · 18/11/2014 21:42

polkadot I am going to go with her to Cambridge, as a driver really so that she doesn't have to worry about public transport hold ups etc but I will stay well away from the college and just meet up with her in between all the different bits to take her for coffee and lunch and keep her calm! I have said that if there are others there at the same time and she would rather hang out with them in the hours in between interviews, then I will happily amuse myself and just be there to drive her home at the end of what will be an exhausting day.

I am currently looking at hotels as she has to be there at 8.30 in the morning and I don't want to risk getting stuck in a traffic jam on the way there. The college would supply accommodation but only for the candidate.

I think the same Mrs B because of long drive and unpredictable traffic maybe good idea to spend the night before interviews at a hotel then at least you won't end up huffy and puffy had you arrived on the morning. Its going to be a memorable adventure for you and dd that's for sure. Don't know how you guys are going to get some sleep with the nerves and the whole process. Overall I think it will be exciting for you guys, for your dd to have gotten this far is an amazing achievement. You know me and DH had discussed that if my dd achieved AAA I would be tempted to maybe ask her to think about deferring and apply to oxbridge the following year.

Mindgone · 18/11/2014 22:43

MrsB, well done to your DD, exciting news! I had a lovely day there last year when DS1 went for an interview. It was so Christmassy! Book a hotel soon, they will be in demand!

Mindgone · 18/11/2014 22:47

Polka, AAA would probably get your DD an interview, but not necessarily a place! But would get lots of other unconditional offers! :)

Littleham · 18/11/2014 23:09

Thanks Mumslife and Polkadot. DD is extremely happy with her three offers and may possibly get a fourth from Bristol (you never know).

Seeing as she has applied for such a popular subject at Oxford, that choice is very unlikely to come off, so we are all kind of expecting it to be a no. Don't think she will hear until the first week in December for History as they have to mark all those aptitude tests.

When I really think about it yeah your right mindgone. It would be a gamble and no guarantee, dd would have to be doing something constructive in that gap year and I would worry she would enjoy the gap year so much she would not want to return back to education. That might be a wasted opportunity with her intelligence. Sometimes I wish I had encouraged her to apply to oxbridge she was discouraged by her friends with nonsense stories that it was only for the likes of upper class kids that go to inde grammar school and is no place for working class families all myths I have now gathered from mumsnet. Non of my other kids went to uni so there has been a huge gap in my knowledge of university application right back to the early 80's when my parents wouldn't let me go. So hence my ignorance to the university process. My dd got gcse 7A* 2A 1B and 4 A's in AS (maths, bio, chem & psych) think I might have done a dis service to her maybe we should have encouraged her to aim even higher. But then i dont want to be a pushy mum either??? I think the highest ranking uni she has applied to is UCL which is a very respectable uni I've been told. To be honest when she applied to uni the only thing I was worried about was whether she could cook and look after herself??. And now I feel maybe we should have encouraged her to not be afraid to aim high or at least have a go. Or well as they say what will be will be. Im leaving it to fate?? Sorry ladies long post I'm in a reflective mood as you might have gathered???

HocusUcas · 19/11/2014 00:36

Polka

UCL is top flight , not just "respectable "

Good luck to her

polka - Don't worry, she will be fine! Your dd has some great university choices.

Worth remembering with so called upper class kids, the only real difference is an accent and self confidence (and it is important to develop confidence in children). As with most kids, the majority are lovely. I have jumped between these two worlds (working class background / only child in family to go to University) and people are just people at the end of the day.

muffinmonster · 19/11/2014 09:43

Polka, UCL is ranked 5th in the world (here), so a bit better than respectable. That's like calling the Queen 'quite posh'. Grin

muffinmonster · 19/11/2014 09:44

BTW, polka I'm sure she is right to aim high. You must be very proud of her.

polkadottyme · 19/11/2014 13:55

Thanks hocus and muffin, your link indeed confirms its a top uni, I'm so glad at least one of her choices is a top one. Mumslife half my worries come from her only applying for 3 uni I thought she did 4 but no only 3???. Bath, UCL and Nottingham. It's all she's interested she says and is adamant she don't want to add anymore and plus she says if she can't get into any of the 3 above. She would rather not go to uni, well any other uni as she says she don't want to spend 3 years somewhere she don't want to go to. Is she been stubborn, ignorant unreasonable?? Or all of the latter?? With her grades I would have thought there's many good uni open to her bit flustered, I'm happy if she gets to Nottingham its going to be her insurance choice she says unless they give her unconditional. She could have applied to Oxbridge really and waste a choice since she has 2 spare?? Too late obviously but I wished I had stepped in and persuaded her to at least try. But at least knowing UCL is a a top flight uni and if she does get rejected at least now I know she tried, she is a very bright child sometimes wonder how that was possible with our DNA?? Littleham I admire your dd at least she has the confidence to just go for it, need to take some risk in life could be the best decision they ever made.

Littleham · 19/11/2014 14:17

She seems to like cities polkadot. How about adding Bristol?
