Separate board needed for Private Schools?

MrsBright · 04/02/2014 21:48

Whilst I appreciate that those of you interested in a private education for your children want to discuss it, I suspect I am not alone in finding the endless succession of 'St Trinians or Eton?' threads irritating. Even more irritating is the 'Obscure local school in the South East vs another Obscure local school in the South East?' since only 1 person in 1,000 will even have heard of these schools never mind have any meaningful opinion of them.

PLEASE - could we get the private school stuff off onto another page so that this board could be about educational issues only and not the private school version of Trip Advisor?

Yes - at the moment, I am not interested in threads about year 9 options, year 6 sats, year 7s settling in or year 11 mocks... there are such a lot of specific enquiries which might come out of a board called 'secondary education' that it would be bonkers to start separating them out, I think - we all just need to read the ones which are interesting to us!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/02/2014 12:39

I do not agree with this suggestion whatsoever.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 05/02/2014 12:47

Hiding the thread is surely a much easier solution.

tess73 · 05/02/2014 14:12

Theoriginalsteamingnit couldn't have expressed it better.

teaandthorazine · 05/02/2014 14:26

Absolutely ridiculous suggestion. Smacks of inverted snobbery, nothing more. No way would I support this.

Blu · 05/02/2014 14:52

I think it would be a shame to remove 'which school' to a separate board. Surely 'which schoolers' need to get the opinions of people already in a school, who would be more likely to be on the secondary or primary board talking about uniform or unreasonable detentions or whatever, and then the name of a school they know of would pop up and they could contribute. If it was n a separate board they wouldn't go there, and no one would get any answers.

Except from those with axes to grind who seek out refs to particular schools to slag them off.

So many subjects have noting to do with whether the school is private or state - bullying, packed lunches, issues with friends, issues with anxiety over tests, etc etc.

Mintyy · 05/02/2014 15:07

Ffs, I've just realised that you have posted this in two separate topics, OP! Were you worried you wouldn't get enough people agreeing with you if you only posted it once?

Blu · 05/02/2014 15:12

What about separate boards for:
Super-selective state
Grammar Schools
Academies
Free Schools
Faith Schools
Rural Schools
Boarding schools - subdivided into weekly boarding, termly boarding and fictional (Malory Towers , Greyfriars , St Trinians etc)
Forest schools
Comps - subdivided into 'Bog standard', 'fair banded' 'local' 'sink' 'visited by Prime Minister and advertised on the back of buses'
Community schools
Foundation schools
Academy Converters
Girls schools
Boys schools
Co-ed
High schools
Technical Colleges
School of the Air (to include Australian posters)
PRUs

OwlCapone · 05/02/2014 17:52

And a separate topic for Whiney Shoulder Chip Schools.

MrsSteptoe · 05/02/2014 17:54

Mintyy I'm afraid I have to take some responsibility for the appearance of this thread on site stuff as well. The OP was asking how she could get Mumsnet to consider her campaign and I suggested Site Stuff might be the way to bring it to their attention. I should have suggested getting this thread moved.

motherinferior · 05/02/2014 17:59

Also:
Leafy Comps (see 'catchment area')
Grubby Multiethnic Comps
Really Posh Privates (see 'beaten up Volvos')...

holmessweetholmes · 05/02/2014 18:10

Surely this is just discriminatory and inverse-snobbish? It seems as though people are just irritated by threads about 'posh' schools. Hide the threads if you don't like them. Plenty of people start threads about which state school to choose - each of these threads would be personally irrelevant to almost the whole of MN. How is it different for threads about private schools?

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 05/02/2014 18:10

Isn't "Really Posh Privates" a dating website?

motherinferior · 05/02/2014 18:28

Oh yes, Zero (refrains from 'beaten' jokes)...

Newyearchanger · 05/02/2014 18:54

Thin it's fine as it is...what's the actual problem ?

LaVolcan · 05/02/2014 19:48
