Why is Scotland’s public holiday on Monday after Saturday’s football match?

Neverflyingagain · 14/06/2026 11:16

With the caveat that I don't follow football and my employer plus the local authority aren't shutting...
Why is there a public holiday on Monday when the football game was Saturday into Sunday? I honestly thought it was because the game would be Sunday into Monday.
Did the Scottish Parliament get their timings wrong or am I missing something?

Because it's a nice thing to do

God almighty fucking everything has to be a mad fight now (parking the NHS delays if that's happening - we shouldn't have such low staffing on holidays anyway it's awful)

Lol okay. Thanks for explaining how my job works.

Anyone working a BH will either get double time or a day off in lieu if they're in a managerial role.

Yes, unfortunately neither of these are of use to me when my children are off and I'm not. Same applies to other colleagues in my situation.

I'm not a manager either so don't get the time off in lieu.

Still replying I see.

When I said "we" in my first post, I was implying my direct colleagues and I, not the full GGC. Everyone else on here has understood the meaning of what I wrote.
The last paragraph in my first post states "MY colleagues" there's thousands and thousands of GGC employees and not all of us are colleagues or have it off.

I bet your son would be cringing at your determination to prove a random stranger on the Internet wrong when you don't even work for the body so have no inside knowledge of how things actually run.

Like I said, you obviously misunderstood what I wrote. Not a big deal and not a hill worth dying on.

How do you know I don’t work for them?

Differentforgirls · 14/06/2026 21:58

LargeBaboon · 14/06/2026 13:05

I work in glasgow local authority in the public sector and we don't have the day off for the holiday.

My children in another local authority do have Monday off school.

Not great having to take a days annual leave unexpectedly when my full annual leave was already pre-organised with all the other school holidays. (Single parent with no family help)

I have a lot of colleagues in the same boat now scrambling for childcare since they announced the BH. We all thought the game would have been sun/mon, so are a little miffed at the unnecessary day off for a small number of people. Would have been fine if EVERYONE was given it. It's causing a lot of problems in my work, especially for parents.

“We don’t have the day off”. “A small number of people”. “having to take annual leave”

So you’re off anyway.

Read your own post!

You would have said you did instead of your son.

You would also know that not everyone has it off.

I know for a fact that it’s not a “small number of people” that have it off. You’re taking it anyway!

You are just goading for a fight.

If you read back, you will see that the whole reason for me being annoyed was I HAD to use my annual leave as my children are off and I'm not.

This leave was already planned around the school year before they announced the extra BH. I am a single parent and will now need to fork out for extra childcare on one of my original planned leave days as I now don't have enough to cover the holidays.

And the paid childcare wasn't available tomorrow or there wouldn't be a problem, except for my bank balance.

I'm actually cringing at how hard doubling down with this.

I still can't quite understand why you are so adamant that because your "cooncil working son" has the day off, everyone else must have it too. Why don't you just go and ask him and give me peace.

Btw, "we" also work weekends too as someone always has to be on call in case the systems go down. Most other local authority workers get the weekends off. Imagine that.

"Small number" and "not everyone" do not mean the same thing.

How strange are you.?

Not 24 hours later but 8 pints of a stronger lager would be 24hr after stopping
So if you finish at 6am Sunday you can't drive before 6am monday and that's at optimum metabolism.
If you are smaller, older or female it can be a lot longer.

I'm not from a drinking culture so had no idea that people might be drinking so much! I have to drive for my job so I rarely drink.

No. I'm a rarely drink, don't follow football, person.
Why do you ask?

Och, getting to the World Cup is a small miracle so why not celebrate it? We're not going to win it, but we can enjoy it for now.

Seriously? Where I live soccer isn't even our national sport and yet our team is at the World Cup. No-one would expect a national holiday for it.

This "performative bribe for votes" thing is hilarious.

How many folk do mumsnetters actually think went down to the polling station last month thinking "aye, you know what, I'm going to vote SNP because a handful of Councils elected to observe an optional Bank Holiday"?

It's risible, laughable garbage, but absolutely typical of the prevailing "oooooh Essenpee Baaaaaaad!" drivel all over anything vaguely Scotland-related on this forum.

It’s more than just the bank holiday though. The SNP never like to make grown up financial decisions. They’re arguing to compensate the WASPI women - a ludicrous waste of money. The tuition fees, Scottish child payment, enhanced disability benefits etc are all totally unaffordable. As are the public sector pay rises.

Boasting that Scottish doctors aren’t striking but English ones are is risible when they just give the doctors whatever pay they want without at thought as to how they’ll afford it. It’s so childish. There can be no improvement in services in Scotland for the next few years as all healthcare funding increases are spent on pay rises. Do we want this? Is this a grown up thing to do? Cause England’s not doing this and that’s why they’re making real progress when Scotland isn’t.

No one ever questions the wisdom of these things, it’s spend, spend, spend.

The reason that so few councils have backed this is it costs money and they’re in a funding crisis. It’s not a case of ‘oh let’s celebrate’ when public services will have to be cut to fund it. I’m impressed so many councils have told the Scottish government they’re not doing it. At least there are domestic grown ups in public services in Scotland. Aren’t any in the financially incontinent SNP.

I honestly thought you were calling your work "a dump" there. So you couldn't go to an actual dump? Poor you 🤐

Haha! No not my work, although we are an English based company, so get the English bank hols. I love getting the August one off.

No, I wasn’t going to the dump today but it’s forever closed as it is due to the skips being full and it’s just a pathetic reason for a bank holiday

Treefou · 14/06/2026 22:39

I love the outrage in the National about some breakfast tv questioning whether Scot’s need that long to sober up, and yet on here those defending the SNP position are saying the Scot’s need that long to sober up.

Its clear to me that the Scottish government thought the match was in the early hours of Monday morning when they went ahead with this, realised their mistake but rather than look like total tits are trying to brazen it out. There is no other reason for needing a bank holiday to recover from watching a football match 24 hours beforehand.

Maybe your country qualifies more often? It's 28 years since Scotland last played in a World Cup and their qualifying match this year was rather wonderful and I think we all got a bit giddy!

I know many people in England are saying there doesn't seem to be much excitement about it yet. Maybe that will pick up this week when their matches start? There is definitely lots of excitement here though (and has been since last week), perhaps because our involvement may not last long. Pubs and other venues had special licences for ticketed events last night. Kids are buzzing about friends or relatives they know are in America. Many cars and homes displaying flags.

Highonmyownsupply · 14/06/2026 13:25

This. It is not a BH for the whole of Scotland. Some individual councils voted for them, others declined.

Edinburgh and Glasgow frequently have local (and different) Bank Holidays.

KnittyKnotty · 14/06/2026 23:11

I'm Scottish, living in Scotland, Public Sector worker and don't see the point in it.

Also I don't know anyone who is actually getting the day off either (our 4 local banks have closed in recent years). Factoring in all the 1000's of Scots in Boston, retired people and non-workers is anyone currently in Scotland actually seeing the benefit of it?

countrylife00 · 15/06/2026 05:19

We can’t have the day off in England - GCSEs and A levels still going, as are uni exams etc.
I did notice all the students on the news last week, in Scotland, dressed up in football shirts at school. Their enthusiasm and joy shone through.
My immediate thought was that they would never allow that in English schools, through fear of upsetting someone not from England.

Endgames · 15/06/2026 06:46

my company didn’t give it but I’m glad for everyone that did - 36 years since they won a world
cup game, it’s boosted so many fans and was a great reflection of hard work and persistence. I saw all the videos of Scottish schools and John McGinn et al unlike some of them are pretty decent role models. It had to be this game - Morocco and Brazil, it’d be a miracle if we got a goal there.

PurpleThistle7 · 15/06/2026 07:01

Totally normal day for us here in Edinburgh. No holiday, no time of in lieu, just school and work.

I am not from Scotland (immigrated here 20 years ago from the states) and while I agree there’s nothing inherently important about kicking a ball in circles, the excitement here is lovely and so cheering in a time where the world is always terrifying. I love all the clips of the tartan army around Boston. Makes a lovely change from bombings and shootings and mortgage rates.

Do I think that’s worth £60M two days later? Probably not. But in the era of trillionaires and endless wars and Trump’s insane fight club thing I can’t get too overwrought about it either.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 14/06/2026 11:48

My theory is that when the date of the game was announced, they didn't check the time and probably assumed it would be in the late evening rather than the early hours of the morning. Hence the completely unnecessary Monday public holiday!

Yes I’ve been wondering that too. I wonder if, in due course, we may find out say via an FOI

My private sector workplace gave us its tbh I actually need it as I did an all nighter last night. I have no idea how I managed that when I was younger. Went to bed at 5 and got up at midday and still feel absolutely fucked! We are to be mindful of our English colleagues as they are already pissed off that we get 9 bank holidays due to the 2nd January.

I suppose we could argue that our tax rates are higher …
