Why is Scotland’s public holiday on Monday after Saturday’s football match?

Neverflyingagain · 14/06/2026 11:16

With the caveat that I don't follow football and my employer plus the local authority aren't shutting...
Why is there a public holiday on Monday when the football game was Saturday into Sunday? I honestly thought it was because the game would be Sunday into Monday.
Did the Scottish Parliament get their timings wrong or am I missing something?

This "performative bribe for votes" thing is hilarious.

How many folk do mumsnetters actually think went down to the polling station last month thinking "aye, you know what, I'm going to vote SNP because a handful of Councils elected to observe an optional Bank Holiday"?

It's risible, laughable garbage, but absolutely typical of the prevailing "oooooh Essenpee Baaaaaaad!" drivel all over anything vaguely Scotland-related on this forum.

I know. It’s hilarious. It’s either that or if we had known about Peter. We knew! Still voted SNP and they’re bewildered 🤣

Yes I know. But I was going by your post about the LA and you not having it off. If you work for a private contractor then you’re not a council employee and they all have it off. That all!

I didn't say I worked for a private company? I was giving examples of different roles and bodies that work for the public sector as you weren'tsure what the other poster was trying to explain.

Why are you being confrontational?

Your son has it off. His job is not the only role in the whole of GGC, and the more critical roles are still having to work tomorrow. I'm not sure why it would be so hard for you to understand that.

If the game had been Sunday into Monday I could have understood this justification. The Scottish game was Saturday into Sunday. Surely even we Scots aren't going to still be drinking and celebrating over 24 hours later.

Not 24 hours later but 8 pints of a stronger lager would be 24hr after stopping
So if you finish at 6am Sunday you can't drive before 6am monday and that's at optimum metabolism.
If you are smaller, older or female it can be a lot longer.

My theory is that when the date of the game was announced, they didn't check the time and probably assumed it would be in the late evening rather than the early hours of the morning. Hence the completely unnecessary Monday public holiday!

I think a lot of people had it in their heads it was Sunday into Monday so I think this is entirely possible tbh!

We decided in my org to give everyone it off - while I get the economic impact there’s a lot of things to be upset/angry/whatever about just now and having an extra day to celebrate is fine with me!

soundsys · 14/06/2026 19:51

LargeBaboon · 14/06/2026 13:05

I work in glasgow local authority in the public sector and we don't have the day off for the holiday.

My children in another local authority do have Monday off school.

Not great having to take a days annual leave unexpectedly when my full annual leave was already pre-organised with all the other school holidays. (Single parent with no family help)

I have a lot of colleagues in the same boat now scrambling for childcare since they announced the BH. We all thought the game would have been sun/mon, so are a little miffed at the unnecessary day off for a small number of people. Would have been fine if EVERYONE was given it. It's causing a lot of problems in my work, especially for parents.

Didn’t realise all of GCC weren’t getting it! How does that even work, I assumed it would be all or nothing! I mean like, schools are closed

I work in software. The systems don't get the day off and neither do the people controlling them.

If you are drinking until 4am Sunday morning you are unlikely to be fit to drive rush hour Monday morning.

28 hours later?

Ok. Won’t answer you again. His role is actually very critical and I know that GCC have given their employees the bank holiday. If you’re not getting it then you either, don’t have GCC contract or you have chosen to work it. It’s that simple.

AgnesMcDoo · 14/06/2026 20:02

Not that many places are taking the bank holiday. Just GP surgeries and pharmacies where I live in Scotland

Lol okay. Thanks for explaining how my job works.

You’re welcome. You really shouldn’t say that GCC haven’t recognised the BH, when they clearly have. You’re an exception rather than the rule.

And some small charities (including mine) because jeesoz our teams deserve a break with the world/Glasgow as it is!

The whole of the NHS is getting it, at a cost. See below from a FOI

  1. The Scottish Government estimates that the cost of honouring an additional public holiday for NHS Scotland would be approximately £60 million. This figure is an estimate of the overall financial impact across NHS Scotland, including staffing costs associated with maintaining essential services. Actual costs may vary depending on local arrangements and service requirements. A corresponding reduction in elective patient activity is estimated at approximately 15–20% compared to a standard week, in addition to the potential closure of GP and dental practices for that day.

I thought you weren't going to reply to me again?

I didn't say GGC aren't recognising the BH. I said I am not off the BH. Maybe a quick conversation with your son, who works there, would help you understand the various front and back facing roles.

If you care to read back on my comments you will see that you have made a simple mistake.

Let's just admit that you got the wrong end of the stick and leave it there shall we? This is not a hill worth dying on.

Niceness2026 · 14/06/2026 20:12

My tesco home delivery was cancelled this morning. Did wonder if it was due to the drivers being hungover 🤔

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 14/06/2026 20:13

£60 million. Outstanding value for money. 🙄

Nope. Read your original post.

Must be the same for the other 12.

ConstanzeMozart · 14/06/2026 20:17

It continues to astound me how much cultural significance is given to the men’s variant of one sport. I wonder if the same would happen for women’s football?
I agree the extra bank hol is crowd-pleasing performative politics.

NotDavidTennant · 14/06/2026 20:24

Scotland v Brazil is a week on Wednesday at 11pm, so if the argument is that Scotland fans need 24 hours to recover then presumably the Thursday should be a bank holiday as well.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/06/2026 20:25

I’m in Aberdeen and we have it - I’m not interested in football at all, but happy to have a long weekend! DP stayed up and watched last night but I went off to bed and left him to it.

LargeBaboon · 14/06/2026 20:26

Differentforgirls · 14/06/2026 20:15

Nope. Read your original post.

Still replying I see.

When I said "we" in my first post, I was implying my direct colleagues and I, not the full GGC. Everyone else on here has understood the meaning of what I wrote.
The last paragraph in my first post states "MY colleagues" there's thousands and thousands of GGC employees and not all of us are colleagues or have it off.

I bet your son would be cringing at your determination to prove a random stranger on the Internet wrong when you don't even work for the body so have no inside knowledge of how things actually run.

Like I said, you obviously misunderstood what I wrote. Not a big deal and not a hill worth dying on.

YellingAway · 14/06/2026 20:43

The extra bank holiday has been a logistical nightmare. We don’t have it but have had to give staff last minute day off as they don’t have childcare- much too short notice to be practical.

havingoneofthosedays · 14/06/2026 20:47

OP are you an English living in Scotland 🤣
