Why is Scotland’s public holiday on Monday after Saturday’s football match?

With the caveat that I don't follow football and my employer plus the local authority aren't shutting...
Why is there a public holiday on Monday when the football game was Saturday into Sunday? I honestly thought it was because the game would be Sunday into Monday.
Did the Scottish Parliament get their timings wrong or am I missing something?

A bank holiday never falls on a weekend.

tigger1001 · 14/06/2026 11:20

Because it's the closest "working" day. Never a public holiday on a weekend.

Jellycatspyjamas · 14/06/2026 11:21

The same reason we get an extra day at new year.

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/06/2026 11:22

Take it up with Chaz, he formally approved it.

sohard · 14/06/2026 11:24

Because the hangovers are expected to roll into Monday.

PollyBell · 14/06/2026 11:26

Would it have made more sense to have it the friday? No?

Why wouldn't it be on the Monday?

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 14/06/2026 11:29

I don’t think many places are having it except nhs, gp surgeries etc. While Scotland being in the World Cup should be enjoyed and celebrated, as someone whose husband had a heart attack this weekend it’s fucking scandalous when the nhs is struggling to then choose to lose so many man hours for a game of football.

Chrysanthemum5 · 14/06/2026 11:31

Because it is purely performative politics. Announce a public holiday but then don’t actually enforce it so only the NHS and civil servants actually are getting it. Totally pointless

People who work for us but live in Scotland are taking it. They are going to have a shock on Tuesday when they come in and find a days annual leave missing.

Formal agreement with them is that they take English bank holidays, which they signed up to, but just decided to take this one because it’s the World Cup.

Announce a public holiday in the lead up to an election, but then dont actually enforce it.
Only 6 of 32 councils have approved it as a holiday

How can staff just decide they’re taking a public holiday? Have you told them in advance they need to use annual leave or be unpaid?

DidntLikeTheEnding · 14/06/2026 11:48

My theory is that when the date of the game was announced, they didn't check the time and probably assumed it would be in the late evening rather than the early hours of the morning. Hence the completely unnecessary Monday public holiday!

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/06/2026 11:50

I don’t tell them anything, it’s not my job anymore. The ones doing it just like to stir up shit, so our line manager is just taking the days leave from them.

completelylostagain · 14/06/2026 11:51

Our council voted against it so we are not following it which is weird bc we live near the boundary and the next door council are taking it. It’s caused havoc with parents having to work and kids being off school cross boundary.

relaxitsok · 14/06/2026 11:52

It’s been great for us, kids have the hol on Mon so it meant I could let them get up and have a bit of fun with it all. They lay in a little today but will be knackered later and tomorrow morning, so lets us have a slow day and catch them back up on rest.

ERthree · 14/06/2026 12:06

The match wasn't on Saturday for the fans at home, kick off was the early hours of Sunday morning. Many many fans will still be celebrating until tonight and will still be over the limit ( remembers ours is 22mg/100ml) come Monday morning so it is best they stay in bed.

I hope your Husband is ok. Having had 2 myself i know the shock takes a long time for the whole family to recover from. We are blessed having such a fantastic Cardiac unit at Hairmyers here in the Central belt, i hope you had great care either there or near to you🍀

Surely the company has announced this? People don’t just take a day off without checking if it is a company holiday. There are other Scotland only holidays, presumably these are dealt with fine.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/06/2026 12:14

Why on earth is there even a bank holiday for qualifying? I don’t remember any of the other home nations getting one!

This is also the case with local holidays, why is this one causing havoc and those don’t?

Company has announced nothing. The ones doing it have said what they are doing and knowing them, they’ll do it, as they are dicks.

They moved to Scotland during Covid, but signed an agreement that they would continue to follow the English bank holidays.

Because our Govt asked for it!

Thank you @ERthree he is still in Crosshouse just now - going through the process of monitoring, assessing and medically managing, they are talking about echo hopefully on Monday then transfer to either Hairmyres or Golden Jubliee for angiogram.

He is a self employed tradesman and don't think he has got it into his head yet he'll probably be off for several weeks if not months.

OMG I'm sorry, how is he doing?

Neverflyingagain · 14/06/2026 12:33

Thanks for replies. I don't understand why they have given an extra public holiday. That's my point. Not that the public holiday should have been today (Sunday). I understand how public holidays work when they fall on a weekend!!!
If it's so people can drink all the way through Saturday - overnight - all day Sunday then we really do have an alcohol problem far worse than I realised, and one which is Govt approved and encouraged.
If Scotland win at the football then have an extra public holiday so they can parade in the streets etc etc and have a homecoming. That's the time to have an extra holiday.
